Recently purchased an M&P and I Need help understanding why the slide (inside, front area) of my S&W M&P 9 shows a rainbow looking color? Does anyone else have this kind of color in the inside front slide? Should I be concerned? Thanks everyone!
It looks like what I've seen on a number of S&W pistols. It's a protective coating to prevent rust during warehousing/shipping, etc. It's easily removed with cleaning.
Is it the Rainbow Brite model? Sorry..I was only joking. That's the first thing that came to mind. Hopefully it's nothing to it. It almost sounds like a oily type film.

Haha! No it’s not the rainbow version! I emailed Smith and Wesson. I hope to hear from them in 3-5 days. I tried wiping it off and it won’t come off. So I don’t think it’s rust.

Thanks. Tried wiping it off with oil and it won’t come off at all.

I've used cleaners (like BreakFree and others) on other models that had something similar, and they came clean. This may be something different, but it looks like what I've encountered on S&Ws and Glocks. I just bought a new M&P 2.0 and I haven't even taken it down for cleaning yet. I'll look at it later and see if there is something like this inside of mine. There wasn't in my Shield.

Good deal. I know it's concerning when you see something like that and you're not sure what it is.
