Picked Up a M&P 9 M2.0 Compact
I guess I've been looking at the M&P 9 M2.0 Compact since I got my M1.0 Shield 9. I just never worked up to actually buying one untill yesterday.
The Academy price was $499.99, and it was on sale for $449.99. Then I noticed a sign for Military 10% off, and remembered there was a $50 Military rebate.
My before tax price was $401.99 and I filed the rebate today. For $351.99 plus tax, I just couldn't overlook it. The ambidextrous slide release was a pleasant extra.
I retired 22 years ago, but they accepted my retired ID for both programs.

Don't plan on using it as a right-sided slide release.
Not intended to be.
Just FYI.

Anxious to hear how it performs. Sounds nice as I like compact models.

Great gun the M&P 2.0 Compact. Carries and conceals great even with 17 rounds.
I think I was able to release the slide just once on the right side.
I love shooting it. Just put Trijicon Bright and Tough Night Sights on mine a few days ago.

You might find one that'll let you release the right-side lever on a 2.0, with great effort, but S&W didn't design or intend it to be a slide release.

Re Slide Release: After seeing your reports on the issue, I tried it out. It's VERY stiff. But the demo in the store worked just fine.

The slide needs to be slingshotted. Some pistols just aren’t designed to use the slide release to close the action. Kahrs are like that, M&Ps too.
I love my MP2.0 compact!

The 2.0 slide lock was re-designed to eliminate the tendency of the 1.0s to auto-close the slide on a hard mag insertion.
That's the purpose of the new small lever on the left side.
Correspondingly, the right-side lever is intended by S&W to ONLY be a slide lock.
It's not designed or intended to be a slide release.
Tolerance stacking being what it is, you may find one that'll allow you to drop the slide from the right side, and/or you may find a dealer demo where the gun's been.....adjusted....to allow it.
People don't understand what S&W did here in the 2.0s & many think it's a defect, when it's a design feature.

You qualify for the S&W LE Program prices anytime if you hold military retiree credentials.

So if the slide lock is not intended to be a slide release, why bother putting a lever on the right side? I shoot lefty, and find most "ambidextrous" features, except for an ambi decock lever, useless.

A person still uses it to release the slide manually on an empty gun with the mag inserted. JMHO.

For lefties to lock the slide OPEN, not to close it.
It pushes up just fine.
It is still a fully functional slide LOCK.
This is not unique to the Smiths, the Ruger American's right-side lever is set up the same way & for the same reason.

I am over 50 and shoot left handed. I through out the years, I have adapted to traditional right handed controls. When I hold open a slide, I use the second joint of my trigger finger to push it up, and I use the left middle finger on my shooting hand for magazine release. That slide release method has always worked great for Berettas and Glocks but on the M&P platform, I find it a little more difficult. So, for me personally, except for safeties, and decockers, ambidextrous controls are of little use, as they would require me to change my "manual of arms." For new left handed shooters it would probably be beneficial, though it may cause issues when shooting a weapon with traditional controls.

I'm over 50 too, and a long time back I learned to forget about the slide lock/release lever in closing the slide entirely.
I just over-hand it, and avoid the issue of right or left or ambi slide lock/ release altogether.
That's directly transferable across all brands of semi-auto that are big enough to get a hand on top.
Smith's concern in this part of the 2.0 upgrade was to avoid the auto-close tendency of the 1.0 M&Ps, and they were successful there.

I don't see the auto close as a problem for me.

S&W saw enough feedback from those who do to make a correction part of the 2.0 upgrade.

That is a very likely possibility. Of course, S&W corporate lawyers could have seen "auto close" as a potential liability so S&W acted under the advise of council.

Either way, that's what it is.
No ambi slide release.

I am on the fence for a 2.0 Compact
and just so I understand the concept of the 2.0 Ambi lever....
its only purpose is for manually locking the slide open....either right or left handed.
Would that be a correct statement?

The LEFT side can be used for locking OR releasing the slide, the RIGHT side is ONLY intended to LOCK the slide open.
In that sense, it is not intended by S&W to be a true ambi lever, with full performance on both sides.
You MAY find a sample with either wear or manufacturing tolerances that will let you release the slide with the RIGHT side lever, but it's not intended to function that way.
Can't put it any plainer than that.

That’s awesome! I was just at academy today and they had M&P 2.0 on clearance for $379.00 I would have bought it right than and there but it had the thumb safety (I didn’t do my research in store like I should have to see that it can be removed) needless to say I’m going back in the morning!
Sorry didn’t mean to jack your thread!

I know this doesn't help much but yesterday an email blast arrived from a chain offering the 2.0C for $350 plus $10 shipping. After the current rebate, that'd be $310 delivered. Obviously they sold out quickly.

Maybe the 3.6" version has already begun cannibalizing sales of the 4"; leaving them overstocked.

the 2.0 compact is a WICKED gun. I had an M&P 9c (my wife still has hers) and I really disliked it. glock 26 size, but with a ****** trigger and I just couldn't hit anything with it. sold it and bought the 2.0 compact and fell in love. Sure, it's G19 size, but it's wonderfully ergonomic and I can hit everything I aim at. One of my favorite "large" compacts along with my G19 Nibx version.
as for M&P,s I picked up a 2015 born date LEO trade in M&P 45 full size and it hits the spot for a bedside gun.

Well I ordered one today.
Now to find a decent OWB holster.
I would prefer a Safariland 7TS but they dont make one for a 4"

I just picked mine up at my FFL. Here's a couple pics comparing it to my fullsize, 1.0 compact and Glock 19 gen 4,
Apex trigger and trijicon hd sights are on the way. I'd like to get a 3.6 version too.

When you say Apex trigger, are you referring to a kit or just the trigger itself.

I will admit my focus lately is 1911 and I lucked out when the Shields first came out years ago and ended up with a Mass. springed 9 lbs DA press. I put in an Apex kit and Ram and cleaned up to a nice 6lbs press.
What should I expect from a 2.0 Compact 9mm trigger? Mushy trigger. I don’t mind spending extra to clean it up. Not looking for competition. Clean breaking duty trigger is what I want.
Thanks in advance

The stock 2.0 compact trigger is actually pretty good. When I got my fullsize 2.0 I didn't think it needed an Apex trigger. I changed my mind after shooting it back to back with my Apex equipped 1.0. The Apex trigger made me more accurate and able to shoot faster. Initial take up is shorter and smoother. Both my fullsize and compact 2.0's had gritty/rough take up. Reset travel is also reduced and the trigger breaks like glass. Since you're a 1911 fan you'll love the trigger.

My 2.0 Compact has a really good trigger. Only change I might make is the Apex striker block kit. It smooths out the take up some. I think the 2.0 sears are good to go.
