I really, really like my 2.0 Compact. I paid $310 shipped after the rebate and I will gladly spend a bit more if there is a highly recommended aftermarket recoil spring.

My spring also broke. Brand new 3.6" received 8/17. been to the range twice. Maybe 200 rounds or so. I'm pretty sure the spring was fine when I first received the firearm. but when I went to clean it this morning, I noticed the end was broken off and floating around the guide rod. I'll try to attach a picture.

Called S&W and told them, and they said they would mail me a new one. They didn't say it was a known problem, but they also didn't ask a single question about it and the phone call only took about 3 mins which was mostly me giving my address.

Wo can someone tell me, other than length, is the rod end retaining the spring different between the 4” and 3.6”?

I just find it difficult to believe that there is no issue with the 4” guide rod spring but now there are several reports of problems with the 3.6” spring. Is there that much more stress on the spring for the 3.6 since it has to do the same amount of work in less distance? Maybe that is just enough to exceed the strength of the rod spring end cap???

Disappointing as I bought the 3.6 to carry a lot and home defense. Now I have to womder about the long term integrity of the guide rod spring. Makes me womder of I should ask for a replacement to have on hand. Or wait until they fix the manufacturer defect in the spring.

I understand there will always be a small manufacturer failure rate. But the 3.6” model has not been out long and we already hace several reports of fsilire. They have not made that many of the 3.6” relatively. So the failure rate seems much higher than what would be expected for “normal” statistical failure rate.

Default Is my spring becoming an issue?

With all the postings regarding the RSA for the 3.6, I inspected mine. The pistol was purchased 8/20, and only has about 150 rounds through it (all flawlessly) so far.

If my pictures are adequately legible (and actually loaded) ... do I have a problem?

I have not even shot my 3.6”. Hopefully this weekend. Also bought mine early august and recieved ankut mod-august

My RSA looks about identical to the pictures above.

Seems to me that the forward end cap for lack of a better word is minimal at best with very small area for end spring coil retention. Seems lome a short stub the inserts i to the slide and then a disk (similar but smaller diameter to the rear RSA slring end) to withold the spring would be a better design. Or at least I woild feel more comfortable that the spring won't “unclip” from the front end indentation.

No, you do not have a problem.

I just inspected the RSAs on all my M&P guns. A couple look like yours and I haven't had any issues with them in a few thousand rounds.

When in the gun, the spring is held in place by the slide. That nut on the front of the guide rod isn't even touching the spring when the gun is fully assembled. It will only press on that nut when removed from the gun. Even if it were to slip past the nut, that would only happen when out of the gun so, the gun will continue to work.

If it did actually slip past the nut, S&W will replace it for free.

Thank you Rastoff. I feel better about the situation. I have been very fortunate with all (the few) of my firearms in that I have not had any mechanical failures - so far. Thanks again.

Well said, and this is my actual experience. After my spring slipped past the nut on the front of the guide rod, seemingly trying to leave the area altogether, I was able to get it back into the slide (through clever redneck engineering), and after doing so, the gun functioned flawlessly for another hundred rounds or so until it was replaced. I have every confidence the gun would have continued to function without a problem, since (like Rastoff mentioned) the spring is essentially "captured" by the slide in a way somewhat similar to other, non-captured designs.

Yep. Ran mine through a 250 rnd defensive pistol course like that with no issues. Replaced it when S&W sent me a new one, but believe it would've been operational indefinitely as it was.

Could be a design flaw. Notice how the end is wrapped around the end cap? Like it's halfway off already instead of completely under the cap. If/when that little spot weld breaks the last two loops apart.....it's all over but the cryin'.

Idk, this is my first M&P pistol. But I “think” they’ve fixed the issue. The replacement spring they sent me was different, it was just a single spring. The one that shipped with my 3.6 was a dual spring, and while that spring slipped off the end once I field stripped it, it didn’t cause my gun to malfunction.

Does the 4” have a dual spring assembly or just a single spring?

My 3.6 definitely feels better with the new single spring. I’m around 400 rounds no hiccups.

Mine has a single spring. Every picture of a 3.6 or the 4” spring was a single spring. So I have no idea how your got a dual spring.

Sorry I haven’t been on for a while. Yes, the spring broke the FIRST time when I pulled the slide back and then forward off of the frame. I had not done anything more than take the gun out of the original packaging/box. I gave it a good cleaning to remove anything from the factory that was on the gun, but did nothing to the spring. Took it to the range and put 100 rds thru it without issue. Brought it home and disassembled it to clean it and when I pulled the spring out, a SECOND piece came off and the spring then extended out over the end of the recoil rod. S&W replaced it and I got a spring for the 1.0 that works also, albeit a fraction of an inch shorter as depicted by the caliper pictures above. The 1.0 spring worked well for another 375 rounds until the 2.0 spring arrived. Been flawless ever since! Several thousand rds thru it now and all have been flawless! Been on my hip for weeks now

Well, that’s odd.

My new spring has been good through 2 range trips. No hiccups yet, been through about 300 rounds.

Love shooting it. Melts in my hand, real soft shooter. Accurate as heck for me.

Maybe I missed it somewhere but wasn't there mention of yellow and also blue springs? What's the difference between the yellow and blue?

Blue is for full sized guide rods, yellow is for compact guide rods, if I'm not mistaken.

Usually, in the pressure business, color stands for resistance of the spring. How much weight is needed to compress it/

There is now.

I sent my m&p to the folks at Galloway Precision and they now make them in various versions depending on the type of ammo you will be using. Link here:

Just received the replacement spring from Smith and Wesson. They sent me one labeled for a 45 compact. I immediately called them and the person on the phone immediately said "oh yeah its the same part". Ok I'll give it a try. I go and get my 2.0 9mm compact 3.6" and the spring assembly they sent me is about 3/4" longer and of course won't fit in there. So I had to call them back again and explain the issue again. Now I have to wait another 7-10 days to receive it.

And just FYI, the 45 compact assembly they sent me is painted orange.

My 2.0 compacts (I have 3 of them and they are the 4 inch models), and I believe they all have the blue paint on the springs.

Could you please confirm? Are yours 9mm or .40?

Odd that some are yellow and some blue.

I wish Galloway would make that guide rod/recoil spring assembly for the 3.6" version. I emailed them to ask if they had any plans to make a 3.6", but no response (over a week ago).
