Default Any recommendations for a 5" M&P

I've been looking at the Performance Center 40L that is ported with high viz sights or the basic PC Pro-Series. Any thoughts or advice? I've never had a ported pistol but have read some good things about them.

And for those who ask what I will be doing with it, I will just be shooting it. Probably at the range, probably not going to carry it (I love my shield once I got the Hogue sleeve). Just adding another pistol to my family of M&Ps. I would love to start shooting in competition, but just haven't found the time yet. So, it will just be because I love shooting and my only 5" pistol right now is a Kimber 1911.

Thumbs up

Looks like a good, full-size, all-around, multi-purpose shooter.

I've got a few 5" M&P's including a PC ported model. I don't think you can go wrong with either the Pro or PC model. As for porting on a range gun, that would be a personal choice. It does suck up some muzzle flip (which isn't a bad thing with a 40 which tend to be snappy anyway.) If you end up not liking the porting for any reason, it's not a major investment to swap the barrel out.

I am right there with you.

Next month I am purchasing the exact ported model you are asking about, but in 9mm.

Performance Center(R) Ported M&P(R)9L HI VIZ(R) Fiber Optic Sights | Smith & Wesson

I have looked at all the 5" and longer pistols and finally made my choice after touching, handling and dry firing many different pistols over the course of 6 months.

ALOT of myths and lies about ported barrels out there. I will be using mine for the range, and possible conceal carrying.

Both are Pro models with essentially the same action. The CORE model is for adding an optic sight, and has high iron sights that aren't that great by themselves.
The Pro (not CORE) has plain black back and front FO sight all set up for USPSA Production or IDPA/SSP.
So, CORE if you plan to add optic sight, regular Pro if you don't.

That's not actually a correct response.

The Performance Center with the ported barrels are not considered "Pro" nor labeled as such from Smith and Wesson.

Also the OP was not referring to any of the CORE models.

The ported PC model he is talking about has the High Viz sights, and does not come with the CORE option.

Also the ported PC has an adjustable over travel stop. Non of the Pro Series come with that.

Just making things clear.

Thanks - Preston

Hardly. You are right about one thing. The basic action comes in many different choices of sights, ports, stop, etc. And the descriptions, written at different times, can make it sound like they are completely different. BUT they all come with the same "Pro" parts in the actions, whether you get one labeled Pro or PC. Hopefully, the PC gets a little more personal attention, but some that have come through didn't look like it.
And this is from taking them apart, not just reading the catalog.

I don't think they are completely different if you refer to the internals...... I was just pointing out some specifics as far as the differences.

Its like a Toyota and Lexus. Same engine, but different setups.

Maybe I mis-read your post. Idk

i have the Pro 9 with a 5” barrel. It is a fine pistol which I use for competition. I love the fiber optic front sight and black rear, which are Warren. It came with two 17 round mags. I have nothing bad to say about it. I’m not crazy about ported barrels, and have no real muzzle flip issues with the 5 inch barrel and slide balancing the pistol well. If I had the decision to make again, I’d buy it again.

Any thoughts on the new M2.0 5" .40 FDE as a possible canidate?
These are pretty close to the Pro series models. I picked one up and installed a set of Hi-Viz sights. I also installed a Apex polymer trigger.

Would this qualify it as a M2.0 Pro Series?

I'm quite happy with it. Good sights, good trigger and good accuracy! I'd like to pick up a 9mm conversion barrel next.

I was wondering about the 5 inch 2.0 after I started the first post here. Anyone know if the internal upgrades on the 2.0 are equivalent to what the Performance Center does?
