New to me 40c

Just picked up a M&P 40c (not M2.0)
Looked as if it was fired maybe 50 times if that.

This is replacing and original Shield 9mm that I never shot well. Probably could have gone with an APEX system and been fine but its gone now.

Anyway, also just grabbed a holster from Crossbreed. A friend of mine recommends them and with the sale this weekend I figure why not.

All that said, who has experience with the 40c?

I have one and it is a nice gun. I use a DeSantis OWB holster. Mostly shooting 155gr rounds and I have no complaints. good Pistol.

I've had my 40c for 3 1/2 years and it has been my primary carry pistol for that entire time. It is more accurate and more reliable than my Shield 9, which is now pretty much a safe queen. My Shield 45 is my back-up carry pistol. It is just as reliable as my 40c, and it's equally accurate out to 20 yards. My Shield 45 is actually more accurate at 25 yards, but I continue to carry the 40c because I like having the three extra rounds.

My 40c just passed 12,000 rounds, and only developed reliability issues (light strikes) as it approached 10,000 rounds. S&W rebuilt it at that point (free, of course), and it has functioned perfectly ever since. For me, the 40c is the perfect carry pistol. It combines high reliability and accuracy, a hard-hitting cartridge, double-digit capacity, and pocket-carryable size. I'm always on the lookout for a gun that can improve on what the 40c offers, but so far I haven't found one. I think you will really like yours. Congratulations on your purchase!

I've owned the Shield9, Shield40, 40C and the 9C. Like you, I never could shoot the Shields well. The grips were just too narrow for me. I really like the M&P'Cs though. Same footprint as the shield just a little fatter. That girth (and few extra ounces) make the C series a much easier gun to shoot well IMHO. I Carried a C for years. As for the 40, I think the C is a better platform for the cartridge for the reasons stated above. Anyway, I mostly carry a snubbie these days but still keep a 9C and likely always will.

FWIW, I just don't get why S&W made the new 2.0 "Compacts" larger. I thought the 1.0 size was perfect blend of size and shoot ability. Right between a G 26 and 19.

Congrats on 40 C . Mine rides I W B desantis holsters. Its first and only 40 I own or have shot. Don't know what took me so long ( 30 years plus). Bought mine new about 3 years ago flawless. I shoot it way better than any other I own . Don't buy the hype that there way more expensive to shoot. Range ammo can be bought at Wal-Mart for no more than a dollar more than 9mm.

swsig - thanks as well. I picked it up for all the same reasons you mentioned aside from pocket carry. I can't seem to get anything to ride comfortably in my pocket. Perhaps my larger legs? I need to look into some different brand pants. If i get anywhere near 10k+ trouble free rounds it will certainly be worth every penny! That'll take me a while but I look forward to getting there! LOL

Wee Hooker - Size was a big factor in my purchase as well. Both footprint and width as I believe thats why I wasn't so great with the Shield. The size of the M2.0 Compact is also why I went with the original one. Thanks for the input.

wingriderz - You mentioned the last deciding factor in my purchase, cost. I had a few buddies trying to talk me into a 45 but having a 380 AND a 45 leaves me buying the 2 most expensive rounds. The 380 has to stay for its tiny size in less clothes. 9mm is cheapest around here and typically allows a round or 2 more BUT being in a non friendly state I am limited to 10 rounds. Well, I could carry 10 9mm, 10 40s or 8 expensive 45s... In my case the choice seemed pretty obvious. Bigger cartridge than 9mm, more rounds than 45. Easy.
I also like the fact that I could grab a 9mm barrel and magazines for that option as well. Never know if a certain size ammo will be hard to come by again or not although I think 40 will be ok since its not very popular.

I appreciate everyones feedback. I look forward to getting out there and trying it out. I'll let you know my thoughts afterwards.

Ironically (due to your screen name) I like the 357c in this pistol. I have the original compact in 9, 40 and 357. The 357c is the best of the bunch in terms of hard hitting, at least for me.

If you want harder hitting in the original compact go with your S&Wc in 357sig then your screen name will fit perfectly.

When I bought my 40c, I'm pretty sure the M&P 357 was out of production. Also, I had read that Texas and North Carolina highway patrols had abandoned the 357 M&P because of reliability issues, so I went with the 40. I do have a SIG P320 in 357 SIG which I love to shoot, but it's not as carry-friendly as my 40c.

Finally took out my new firearms today for a short bit. Traced a quarter on some foam board and put 50 rounds through the Bodyguard 380 and 50 rounds through the M&P40c.

Being used to the Sig P238, the bodyguard beat the **** out of my hand and trigger finger. Somehow I actually pulled the skin away from my nail on the side (would be the bottom when on the trigger. Certainly going to have to work on the position of my finger. Didn't shoot that very well as it was a pretty large grouping. Out of 50 shots only 3 found the circle.

As for the 40c, much better! Grouping was about half the size compared to the BG. 8 shots out of 50 found their way into the circle and many shots overlapped one another. Finger already hurt pretty bad by the time I switched to the 40c so I know I can do a bit better there as well.

If I can figure out how to post a pic I'll toss up my ridiculously awful target from my first outing with these 2 firearms.

Carrying the BG is awfully easy as you may know. But judging by my performance (or lack there of), I would much prefer to have the 40c by my side.

I sure love my 40c v1.0, owned it since they first came out and put many many rounds down range without issue. It's the perfect size for concealed carry IMO. Tried several holsters and finally settled on a Mitch Rosen Upper Limit.

Hmmmmm, mine is an OLD SW40C.
This is the "Glock" copy that got Smith &Wesson sued by Glock and Glock won.
So,,, I carry and shoot a "Glock/Smith".
It still runs perfectly and is accurate.
And it is an "old" friend.
How many others out there have one?

I recall looking at that holster when I had my Shield. May have to look again for this one. I'm waiting on a Crossbreed Super Tuck that was actually shipped out today. I'll see how that goes although I know at some point I would like a decent OWB as well. Thanks for bringing up the Mitch Rosen. Does it hold pretty tight to the body? And is it straight drop or a bit of cant? Thanks.

I purchased a M&P 40c over 6 years ago. It's still my go to carry for CCW and home defense. I CCW the 40c with the 10rd magazines and pinky extesions, loaded with Winchestrer 180gr. PDX1. I have installed the Apex polymer trigger and a set of Meprolight Trudot nightsights. I carry it at 12 o'clock in a Kydex holster.

For home defense I install the fullsize 15rd magzines with the X-Grip spacer. I also add the Streamlight TLR-4(Light/Laser combo). the 40c is a real nice complete package and I still find it hard to beat with my other guns.

I recently found out the 40c will also accept the new M2.0 40Compact 13rd magazines too. I just got to find or make a new X-grip spacer for it. Another win for the 40c!

I believe this is one of the early S&W Sigma 40 compacts. these are late 90's and early 2K models.

Rides high and tight with a straight drop. At 3:00 or maybe even 2:30 ish, it's easy to draw without chicken winging my shoulder. Hope this helps.
