Default My Shield .45, one night stand

Picked her up yesterday cleaned her up. Oiled her up put her to bed. Took her to the range but alas no bang, pop nor even a poof. Called S&W they said send her back home now all I have is her picture.

Wondering how long the turnaround time is.
Man, did she feel good in my hand.

Wow, THAT is disappointing to say the least. Keep us posted/updated on what S&W says the issue was.

Well I have to admit this was a shock after all the good things I read and researched. I have NEVER I repeat NEVER had a new gun not go BANG. All I can say is when I get it back it better not even hiccup. This is my first and will be my primary carry gun.

My M&P .40 full size went back to S&W because the mags full or empty would not drop out of the frame.

Received @ SW: Feb 23, 2018
I PU @ Trader Jerry's 6/7/2018

They put a new frame on it which changes the S/N -- reason it could not be sent to my home.

I'm glad they fixed it at no charge but sure took their time. Lead time and inquiry was 4-6 weeks then 2-4 weeks then 2 more weeks -- which was 3 weeks. I couldn't get a firm commitment from S&W about the status even when I initiated an inquiry.

Oh well...

I won't even pretend to know the labyrinth of AFT rules, but:

A couple of years ago my brother had a new Ruger single action revolver which had a major problem. He returned it to Ruger and they informed him they could not repair it. Ruger told him to choose any of their single action revolvers and they would send it to him at no charge. He made his choice and Ruger sent the handgun via Fed Ex to his house. No paperwork or FFL required.

My brother and I thought it strange, but we don't know the rules.

It does show excellent customer service in action. When I'm in the market for a single action revolver again, guess which brand I'll buy.

I wish we knew more about what happened.

Was there a light strike on the primer?
Did you hear a click when the trigger was pulled?
Did you do any dry practice with it before going to the range?
Was the slide fully in battery?

I'm sure I could come up with more questions. I just wish we could have tried to help you before you sent it back. Sometimes it's something simple.

Yes I test fired it the night before
No the trigger would not go back far enough. It would click with the safety on (trigger had full travel) and the magazine out.
Yes the slide was in full battery.
No I did not test fire it with the safety on and the mag out. It was a moot point by then something was very wrong.
When I described to the Rep what was going on he pretty much said don't do anything just send it back.
Thank you for your concern and willingness to help.

Thank you for those answers Popeye77. It really answers the questions I had.

This definitely should not happen. With the thumb safety on, the trigger should not move. It will have a little slack, but it really should only move a tiny bit. When you have a working model you'll see what I'm saying.

I suspect there is an issue with your trigger bar. Of course we don't know so, I'm just guessing. Still, sending it in was the right thing. There are multiple issues here.

Sorry to hear that, if I can't get through at least 500 rounds without any bobble including my limp wrist it's sold and I go back to revolver.

I'm on a 3.6 9mm right now, first sign of any trouble it goes.
I only ever go back for ammo capacity and the quicker reloads, other than that I trust no semi-automatic further than spit !

Any problem with this latest and I'm staying on revolvers for good. I'm close to 20 guns now in the last 3 years and a whole butch of money wasted.
What is this 3.6 9mm you speak of? Is this a new S&W I need to try?

I hope the 500 rounds you put through each of your 20 guns over the last three years consisted of different projectile weights, velocities, brands, and ogive shapes to assure that the bobbles weren't simple ammunition problems.

I feel the same. If a gun can't go at least 500 rounds with my defensive ammo, without any malfunction and without cleaning or oil, I wouldn't carry it.

However, I seem to have better luck than you. All the semi-autos I have will pass this test.

If this was a new platform, the reaction would be different. But since the Shield has made its reputation for years now, it'll most likely be considered a fluke rather than tarnish its reputation.

Didn't get a chance to call today but I will Monday and see if they can tell me what happened. I agree it is probably a fluke. Humans made it humans fail. I'll know better when I find out what the problem was.

There should be some basic description of what they did / parts replaced on the paperwork included with the gun in the box.

She's back no explanation but had been fired. They smoothed her out and without a doubt worked on the trigger feels good. Range time tomorrow. Also looks like she was polished a bit and lubed.

People ,,, remember like all things , guns are different.
You people are spoiled, we use to have a gun sent to a good smith
to get good feeding from ONE brand of ammo.
Today many guns shoot MOST brands and types.
Always let the gun pick the ammo it likes.
To do otherwise invites problems.
That is why I like FMJ or loads that feed like FMJ.[don't need to hold your mouth right"just in case"]

Range test today Win white box and Speer Gold Dots. No problems and the trigger is too good to replace. Not as good as my Sig bet better than most. Bottom line very happy with it. Now to clean it and shoot again tomorrow. There was not expanation of anything just signed off with a signature.

If they built him a new gun and stamped it with the same serial number, that just may be legal. If it’s a new gun with different sn it’s supposed go thru a FFL.

If you got a new frame, which sounds like you did, then there was a tolerance issue with the old frame that affected something. Once they decided a new frame was in order, the diagnosis stopped there. I don’t believe the factory has any obligation to tell you anything more. Imagine the “tin hat” crowd wanting to know the serial range, what did and didn’t work, ammo, day of the week and moon phase... They would drive the factory people crazy thinking they do, might, think they could, have a related problem and owe them some kind of fix. These things have a great warranty and nothing else but sending it home (like you did) will result in a clean bill of health.

What they did shouldn't be a mystery; call the M&P support dept and don't hang up until they tell you what they did.

Guns back they did some work on it. They worked it over pretty good adjusted the sights and did trigger work on it. Shoots great. Action is smoothed out.

FWIW, gun manufactures in the U.S. are allowed under ATF regulations to ship repaired or replacement guns directly to the owner. No need for an FFL. I have first hand experience with this situation.

Just to add, this also depends on state law. For those in CA, repaired is OK to ship, replacement must go through FFL and is subject to the roster.

Obviously the problem was you bought a female gun, judging by all the “Her’s and she’s” in your posts. Female guns are known to be a problem and are always unpredictable!

My guns are a-sexual and always work with the ammo I give them.

Nice to hear she is now working for you...

Not the only thing California is at odds with Federal about. Marijuana, magazine capacity, ammo, and on, and on, ad nauseum.....

The Feds say Federal Law trumps State law. So....good luck obeying Fed law in California!!

After something like that, it would be on the For Sale market so fast that it would make your head spin. Cannot trust my life to something like that. Overall the M&Ps are good to go, I own about 5 or 6 of them.

It has gone 500+ rounds without a hitch functions smoothly and the trigger is good enough it doesn't need replacing. So I am carrying it with confidence.

They are not going to explain in detail what they did, nor should they feel obligated to do so. Perfect CYA non-answer was given as reported in post #33.
