S&W M&P Compact 22 Ejector Question
I have a M&P Compact 22. When a round is fired the extractor grabs hold of the spent round and pulls it rearward out of the chamber to be ejected by the ejector.
Can anyone please explain how the ejector pushes the spent round out of the gun? I don't know if the ejector moves to push the spent round out of the gun, etc.
The spent rounds are being extracted but sometimes they are not ejecting. I am trying to understand how the ejection works so I can figure out what may be causing the failure to eject.
I have attached a couple of photographs of the spent rounds that have been extracted from the chamber but have not been ejected.
Thanks, Bill

I have a .22 Compact.
I don't like the look of those casings. I've never seen anything like that. Tell us what ammo that is?
First thoughts are that it needs a good chamber cleaning. If the casing comes out that rough, I suspect the chamber is dirty or not polished. Also it may be too light. I can shoot CCI in standard velocity now, but that was only after hundreds of rounds through it.

The ejector is fixed in the frame. You'll see that when you field strip it. The rearward motion of the slide drags the casing back against the fixed ejector. If the rearward motion is too weak, or incomplete, they won't hit hard enough to eject.
Some possibilities:
- casing is not being extracted cleanly, slowing down the slide.
- slide is dragging (cleaning, something such as the shooter's thumb getting in the way).
- ammo is underpowered.

I purchased the gun in December 2015 and it has 3500 rounds through the barrel. I am using CCI Blazer 40 grain 1235 FPS ammo.
I clean the gun each time after I shoot it with Hoppes Number 9 with a patch and brass bore brush. I pay special attention to cleaning the chamber, feed ramp and the ejector claw.
What do you mean by the chamber may not be polished and it may be too light?
Today I shot at the range and I was careful not to let my thumbs touch the slide when firing and I had no failure to eject issues. I will continue to watch my thumbs in the future hoping that is an easy fix.
Thanks for the info in your second post too!

Wow. I hope it was a thumb issue because you certainly checked off all the boxes and it was all good!!!
If its not a thumb drag, then its going to be a "real" problem.

Thanks Dad_Roman - I hope it's a thumb issue too!!
The 22 Compact is a much smaller gun than my Glock 17 and Glock 30 and I don't really care if my thumbs touch the slide on those!

No. Thats one of the boxes checked...OK
Your CCI should be good but I have noticed that guys who have these compacts seem to go through certain brands and (sometimes) find one that works better than another.
I have one and we shoot the heck out of it. It eats about anything and we dont get our nose out of joint with the occasional FTL. My entire family shoots it and my boys and myself occasionally drag a thumb.

The Blazer should be fine, I've run thousands of them through mine.
I meant "tight" when I typed "light".
The rough appearance of the casings made me think they swelled, either too much, or against a rough chamber wall.
Now that you've added the history, I'll bet on the thumb drag. But you may be up for a new barrel, if you call S&W and ask them to check it.

CCI Blazer lead can leave a lot of leading in the barrel and possibly chamber. Is this happening early in the shooting trip or after a good number of rounds expended?
Might try a plated bullet and see if you still have the same issue (as well as watching the thumb drag as discussed).

I have one that I bought just this year. I had Remington 22LR in my stock bought for another weapon and went to range with that box of 500. Right off the bat I started having miss fires or jammed chamber etc. Range master was able to help and clear. we cleared magazine and he showed me the CCI ammo they had in their store. I bought a box of 300 round and started firing with those with great success.
Maybe that is you issue you need to use this ammo.

You talking Remington Thunderbolts or Golden Bullets? Mine runs fine with Golden Bullets so far. I have Golden Bullets stocked up for use with my Advantage Arms kit for my Glocks and have been running them in the M&P Compact without issue.

Hopefully I have solved my failure to eject problem. I have shot 150 rounds through my M&P 22 compact without a failure by paying attention to keeping my thumb off of and away from the slide to eliminate any slide drag that was mentioned by the previous posters.
I hope the trouble was "me" instead of the gun or ammo!
Thanks again for everyone's comments and thoughts!
