A dog we're watching hopped up on a shelf and snatched my shield off of it... I had stepped out while she ate only to return to a chew toy... Shield 1.0 with factory sights, Apex trigger kit, tulster holster... You know. Not a chew toy! Cleaned up what I could with a knife and sanded down the edges so that it wasn't ragged. Bought a hogue grip for it and wished I had bought one before the incident! One, it may have taken the brunt of the biting and two, it's comfortable!

Any lessons learned from this canine experience?

Put the gun up higher than the dog can reach. In my defense, the other two dogs don't bother a thing so I had no reason to put it any higher. This dog likes to test my patience I guess. Two minutes later she ate a small jewelry box and peed on a pillow. She's TWO.

Yep, one of the many reasons I don't want another dog, lol. And parrots are even worse. We have a cat now; doesn't chew anything but the dining room chairs look like a scene from a Wolverine movie. I really don't want any more animals in the house.

Think of it as a cheap stippling job.

Anything my dog can reach is his when I leave the room.

One of the worst aspects of poly pistols - though fortunately not one that becomes an issue all that often.
My dog doesn't chew things, but I avoid leaving valuable items that might tempt him unsecured anyway, FWIW.
Hindsight is always 20/20 of course

This is exactly why we don't let my wife's family visit us.

My dog will "swipe" my firewood and I find it in the form of toothpicks in my bed...Better he eat my firewood then my firearms... Kyle

Surely you are going to send it back to S&W for warranty repair.
When mine was a pup he chewed and ruined the TV remote. I heard a crunching sound then I saw the remote in his mouth. The dang dog can chew up and swallow a steak T bone in no time at all. I hadn't thought about what he could do to a poly gun. I will keep all guns where he can't get to them for sure.

A steel 1911 with VZ grips solves the chew toy problem.

A friend of my husband's paid handsomely for a beautiful white Cockatoo, just like "Fred" on the Beretta TV series.

Once, he left the cage open when he left for work and by the time he got home, the bird chewed the edges off of every wooden object in the house. We went there to see it and it was amazing. All the door and window moldings, cabinetry, and wooden furniture had their edges ripped off.

He gifted the bird back to the pet shop the next day.

Well! I'll be doggone. Who'dathunkit?

I can’t control my home environment all the time. I have grandchildren who can arrive at any time, visiting neighbors who bring their children in.

Pets? Not a concern for my guns.

1. Quick access gun safe, not with batteries
2. Gun
3. Holster & belt
4. All other gun accessories

Yep, she's a foster. I should have been smart, any other time I have to leave the room before I shower I put it in a drawer. Never expected that though... It fared better than I expected after I calmed down and stepped away from her. Still, I like my belongings to reflect the care I give them...

That would be an outside dog right quick!

This is nothing new! I have seen several Glocks that have ended up being a chew toy! You are just lucky there was no discharge!

Not to change the subject but I think this is worth relating: Many years ago I worked for the Truck Division of International Harvester. We had received a large order from I believe Saudi Arabia for some mid size trucks and shortly after we started shipping them we got a frantic call indicating we had to change fenders. The fenders were made of a material similar to fiberglass and the Camels discovered this and were literally ripping chunks off and eating them!

Two years ago I read about a hunter that leaned his (loaded, not on safe) shotgun on a tree. His dog tried playing, and it went off. Got him in the leg.

No more dog "watching"?

Better a dog than a child . . . .

When the children come home those guns get locked up. I'm not that dense. My dog has never bothered anything on that shelf. This dog is unbelievable.

Wiener dog! All my guns and any valuables are safe if placed more than 3 feet above the ground.

Pitbull, no luck there lol. I have since resorted to drawers if I have to take it off for a time being. It's always on me unless I'm working on something Dusty in the house (project wise). Then it goes away. In this instance I had just woken up and fed the dog. Normally I move it to the closet but the one time I don't...

I know of another case where a dog ate most of the grip off a Glock. I have a 16 m0nth old retriever and if I'm sitting in a kitchen chair with pistol on,she wants to lick the holster and the gun. That tells me to keep it put up in a high place for sure. Maybe she just wants to go hunting.
