Default Yet another M&P

Went down to my LGS to order a Rock Island 1911 9mm after doing some research and checking one out over the past couple of weeks. I was very excited to to own a 1911 since I've never had one. I don't personally see the practicality in them, but I think they're great shooter's.
Well I walked in and saw a used M&P Pro 9mm with 4 factory mags for $430 out the door. Guess what I came home with? It didn't have any of the back straps. It had a Hogue wrap around grip, which I didn't like. I did happen to have 2 extra back straps for my M&P 2.0 and they fit quite nicely.

Nice gun with extras at a very attractive price.
Congratulations.

Shot it yesterday. It shoots way over to the left. After a quick inspection, the front sight is too far over to the right. I'll have to get that centered.

My first pistol was a 1911 I made from an 80%. Great experience in learning but way too heavy to carry. Great technology for 1911 but in 2018 there are better choices.

I carry a Light Weight Commander a lot of times and with the right holster an all steel commander sometimes without any issues. The secret is in the holster you choose.

Spent a good hour at the range and I'm having feed issues. When inserting a full magazine and releasing the slide, the 1st round moves forward and hits the bottom of the feed ramp and stops. Like it's too low to slide up the ramp. It happened a lot with hollow points, so I stopped shooting them. But it also happened with fmj's. Just not as often. I have a total of 9 S&W mags between this gun and my 2.0 and it has happened with all of them. Mags seem to be as snug in this gun as they are in my 2.0 and my 9c. Is there something I can check or does it need to go to S&W? I did a visual check and I don't see what's causing this. You can see in the pics where the bottom lip of the feed ramp is worn where the rounds are hitting it.

It may not be the feed ramp, per se, but the way the barrel is positioned (tipped up) when the bullet is moved forward from the magazine by the slide.

I was going to suggest getting a new barrel, either aftermarket or a direct OEM replacement from S&W, but now I am thinking...

... it might be better just to go the old standby route, which is calling S&W and getting a return label and sending it in. I'd include a copy of your pic and explanation, which are well-done and show the problem.

It would be tempting to take the old dremel tool (ruiner of many a pistol and revolver) and lower the end of the ramp. But if that doesn't work, you'd have no standing to go back to S&W for a solution.

I can see the marks on the ramp. Can you "feel" them?

What ammo brand did you shoot?

Can't feel the wear marks.
I was shooting Fed HST 147gr, Fed FMJ 115gr, and Aguila FMJ 124gr

Well since it's a used gun, you could take it back to the local guy you bought it off and see what he says. Looks kinda dry, maybe a good lube and polish that ramp might help. I'm sure S&W will get it right for you, but it may take a few weeks.

I hope S&W will fix it for you. Technically, their warranty only covers the original owner, but most of the time they don't ask. I've read of a few instances when they would only work on a second hand gun for a fee, but that hasn't happened often. Like I said, most of the time they don't even ask. That's not information you should volunteer, BTW.

Sorry, I can't offer any suggestions other than don't do any modifications or attempted repairs yourself until you talk to S&W. They might not work on it if you've tried to polish the feed ramp, etc.

How about trying a hollow point bullet w/ a slightly small opening. Federal 9BP is an old standby that works well in this kind of situation.

Took it back to the LGS where I bought it. He tried some JHP's off the shelf and had the same results. He suggested calling S&W and offered to call for me. I called myself and they emailed me a FedEx shipping label. Gonna send it out on Tuesday.

OP - S&W is top notch with their customer service. It’s a bUmmer your new to you gun has to there but it happens. Yesterday my wife’s 380 EZ Shield came back from service. It was there for just over 3 weeks. I sent it in for the safety recall and mentioned we had some live round stove pipes once in a while. Note sure why but it came back with a new barrel per the repair sheet. They took care of her and I am sure your used gun will come back like it’s new.

Sounds good! Pics of the feed ramp when you get it back would be appreciated. I had the same problem with my FS M&P9 new. Used some 800 grit sandpaper, wrapped around a small dowel, and polished the ramp. Followed up with 1200 grit. Seems to have eliminated the problem that I was having with the 147gr Speer Gold Dots.

My new 2.0c 9mm front sight was the same way, too far right. I attempted to drift it with my normal brass punches but she aint moving. Have not shot it yet, but hopefully a slight rear sight adjustment will work.

NOW, go back and get that 1911, so you have something new to shoot while your M&P is back in the Smith & Wesson factory!

You will thank me later!

Gun was delivered today. They put a new barrel in it. I racked a magazine worth of Federal HST's thru it and they fed and ejected fine. I'll try to get to the range Monday

Did Smith Charge you for the new barrel? If not it is worth mentioning.

No the whole process was free Yet another M&P. Can't say enough about S&W's customer service and lifetime warranty.

MHO, the best thing you can do when buying a used firearm - go to the manufacturers website, and register it in your name. Just maybe, to them, you look like an original owner.

If you ever have to seek help from the factory, they immediately see that you are a registered owner, and may be more inclined to help.

Difficult to see, but here's the new barrel. The small horizontal edge below the ramp isn't worn like the old barrel. My HST's slide right up into the chamber nicely.
Also, I took the slide over to a LGS to get the front sight centered. They normally charge $35, but they were nice enough to do it for free. I wasn't gonna argue haha. Thank you, Staudt's Gun Shop in Harrisburg. Range day tomorrow, hopefully

Went to the range today. Still having problems. Long story, short, I've narrowed it down to 3 out of my 8 magazines. With these 3 mags, Federal HST's are hitting the bottom of the feed ramp ONLY when the mags are about 1/2 empty or less. Full mags start out fine and once I get down to about the last 1/2 of the rounds is when the problem occurs.
My other 5 mags are fine from the 1st round to the 17th. And FMJ rounds are fine, too. No issues with them.

I was gonna buy a SCCY from a friend, when he decided to keep it for a travel gun (my idea.)

Now, I gotta replace the SCCY I didn't buy with something!

Thinking of a Ruger Security 9, or another M&P full size. Hmmmmm

I fall in love with toooooo many guns!

lol

Got new mag springs from S&W. The new ones were about an inch longer than the old ones they replaced. All of my magazines are now feeding with no problems.

Glad they took care of you in such a great fashion. Did they also center your front sight? I can see it is now centered. Often, while at the range, you can disassemble a mag, remove the spring, stretch it a little, and see if that helps. If it does, then you know you can fix it right with new springs. Were the mags with weak springs S&W? If not, who made them?

LGS centered the front sight
All mags are S&W. I had 2 Promags, but I threw them away when they started to feel "gritty" as I loaded them. Replacement springs were factory.

Mag springs are another item people don't replace often enough. At least this simple fix worked out for you and got you up and running besides the new barrel. Enjoy!!
