Default How do I fix my M&P 2.0?

I bought a new M&P 2.0 because I really enjoyed the first generation. I liked the improvements on the 2.0 except for one.

The 2.0 has that little extra spring on the slide lock that prevents the slide from dropping forward upon loading a mag. I liked the auto forward on the 1st gen.

Is there a way to remove the little spring to make the 2.0 auto forward? If so how?

I am aware that the auto forward was considered a defect.

I wasn't aware that S&W made that change on the 2.0. I am ambivalent about the "auto-forward feature" of the 1.0 myself. I don't feel that it is that great of a time saver nor do I think it is a problem provided all other gun handling safety protocols are followed. Sorry I don't have an answer for you as to weather or not the 2.0 can be reverted.

No- you won't be changing that set-up.
It's one of the primary upgrades in the 2.0, and with its re-engineered springing & the right-side slide lock feature, you DO NOT MESS WITH IT.

I don't understand why I can't just remove a spring and make the slide lock easier to come down.

Its not like the gun is going to malfunction

The 1.0 has the spring as well, if you remove it the lock will flop around and possibly lock the slide back at random times, not a desired function. You could file the angle of the notch that the lock engages, but again, if you go too far it won't lock back at all. You might want to order a new slide lock so if you screw up the original you have a replacement to put in to make the gun functional again.

Gnome,
You're right, you don't understand.

Just leave it alone. You do risk malfunctions if you remove any spring associated with the slide lock.

It is my understanding that the 1.0 was not intended to have an auto forward function...the slide shouldn't release unless the shooter releases it. Now, some folks liked that if you seated the mag hard it would release the slide and I kind of get it, save a bit if time and all, but it's actually a minor malfunction IMHO.

1.0 was not designed or intended for the auto-close function.
2.0 was designed (in part) to remove the auto-close function.

The described condition is the nature of the poly framed beast. First time I saw it was some years back when a friend on the Detroit PD inserted a mag in his duty issue M&P 45 and the slide unlocked on it's own. I asked the gurus at my LGS, who said it happens with poly framed guns. Happens with Glocks too. That said, I've never had a slide unlock on it's own on any of my four Gen 1 M&P's.

I would say, it's not just the "spring". The stop tab and the notch in the slide are very different as well. This appears to provide a more positive engagement when locked open.

You know what is funny, your LGS is kind of right. While it was seen as a "defect" on the M&Ps, it was advertised as a feature on HKs and CZs. I actually preferred that feature on my Gen1 M&Ps. I am still a slingshot kinda guy, but have an auto forward upon inserting a mag would be a nice thing. One less step to worry about on a reload or a malfunction clearing.

I have to wallop my FS 1.0 with great authority to get mine to forward. Can't get my Shield 1.0 to do it without injury.

My PPQ and VP9 will do it, but again I need to really whomp them. As far as "advertised" as a feature. My VP9 manual says:

"WARNING: Forcefully inserting a loaded magazine into many pistols may cause the pistol’s slide to close, chambering a cartridge and making the pistol ready to fire. When inserting a magazine, always be sure the VP9 pistol is pointed in a safe direction with your fingers off the trigger and outside the trigger guard. Failure to do so could cause you to unintentionally fire the pistol, resulting in serious injury or death."

I direct your attention to the words "WARNING" and "MAY". I certainly read this as it's not a design feature. Granted, many people like this. S&W decided to change the slide lock to reduce the potential of this occurrence. The M&P manual states the same thing as HK.

"WARNING: DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE WHEN INSERTING A LOADED MAGAZINE INTO THE PISTOL. EXCESSIVE UPWARD FORCE COULD CAUSE THE SLIDE TO MOVE FORWARD, CHAMBERING A ROUND AND MAKING THE PISTOL READY TO FIRE."
