Default Don't want render my holsters useless

Because I do not want to render my collection of .45 shield holsters worthless and they do not make a rear sight mounted laser for the .45 shield, we are thinking about getting the RMSc red dot sight. I have lousy eyesight without my glasses and even with glasses, night vision is only so-so. Anyone already using the RMSc on a .45 Shield? If so, what is your experience?

Lone Wolf Distributors does a really good milling job for $100. I don't have one on my 45 Shield but I am considering it.

If you have not shot a Red Dot Sight (RDS) on a pistol, try before you buy. It is a great sighting system, but not for everyone.

The Shield RMSc fits a Shield pistol very well. It’s a good sight. Mounting it properly does involve milling your slide to sit the RDS low enough so your factory sights will co-witness. While milling is permanent, getting a filler “saddle” can return the gun to almost factory configuration without harming any mechanical function.

There are many discussions here on RDS that can be searched. I have a standard Shield RMS milled onto my 9mm Shield and like it very much. I like the RDS system and also have milled RMRs on a full size M&P 9mm, a Glock 19 and a 27. I put aftermarket night sights on each of these—elevated on the full size pistols to co-witness through the RMRs. The 9mm Shield/Shield has factory height Dawson figure eight nite sites I like very much for their simplicity. They are basically not visible/distracting in daylight shooting, but they provide a vertical string of three dots in the dark.

There is a really long (60 pages, IIRC) string on RDS in the "Secondary Weapons" sub-forum on Lightfighter. All kinds of good info. That forum is not like this one - mostly rough military and LE folks with a very serious mindset. You can learn a lot.

I just did the Gunsite 150 class at FAS a couple weekends ago as part of the effort to transition to my G17 with Aimpoint. The presentation is very different from working with sights for the last 40 years, and made me SLOW. It is truly amazing to me how different it is to find the dot when in the grand scheme the difference in height is pretty darned small. It's not BAD - but very different.

I am doing some more research on the learning curve issues and have been told by one of my client's Firearms Instructors that for older shooters who grew up on sights, it's about 5000 rounds to get over the existing training to the extent that one is functional for serious use. I chatted up the same topic with a deputy who has made the transition - he said it took about a year of training and competition to get the point at which he felt it was a sound choice for duty. (New shooters will be very well served by starting with the RDS as soon as possible.) I'm a fan of the RDS, but there are difficulties you need to accept.

I started RDS shooting about three years ago when I was 66. It took me a dozen hours (cumulative) of dry fire practice and a few hundred rounds of ammo to learn to use the system comfortably. And I’m a slow learner.

I think the 5,000 round estimate is very inaccurate.

Here is a very good link that will explain the "why" of some people's difficulty with changing to use of a red dot sight. I found it interesting and eye opening.
