Default Shield .380 EZ report

Recently bought a new Shield 380 EZ, primarily for my wife. All the reports in the gun mags acclaimed the easy slide rack and minimal recoil. She was all for that.

Went to the range today and found the articles I had read were absolutely true.

Put over 100 rounds thru it, about half Sig FMJ, the other half JHP.
Not a single glitch. Recoil was as advertised. I believe my wife will be happy with the performance.

I did have 2 occasions where I pulled the trigger....nothing! Knew I was not fully engaging the grip safety, changed hand position and it fired. I guess that is an important issue to be aware of. I have quite a few 1911s with grip safeties, also 2 Springfields with grip safeties and never had a problem.
I though the bottom hinged safety would be easier to engage.
Have to fire more to see if some adjustment is necessary.

I have a friend who just purchased one, possibly for his mother to use, if it seems to work out. (She is finding using her Model 60 more problematic as the years accumulate.) So far, in his “testing” he seems pretty well pleased with the gun in terms of living up to its design and advertising claims. He too has some concerns about the grip safety. Of course a huge no-no to say it in today’s world, but I’d guess that would be nothing a rubber band or two wouldn’t cure.

In his initial use of the gun, he was not terribly impressed with accuracy, but he seems to have back-tracked that to the ammunition, and has found some type the gun seems to favor.

As to recoil, I have only fired six rounds from it. Recoil did not seem at all objectionable. Considering everything, if you need the features this gun offers, why not?

I have on and have put about 350 rounds through it. Mixed types from range ammo to personal defense ammo by several manufacturers. Still have not found one that will shoot consistently. I get 3 or 4 that shoot within a couple inches at 10 yds, then a flyer that hits 6 or 7 inches away. Not trigger push or pull or flinching. Doesn’t seem to be related to magazines. Happens with both of the ones that came with it and a third I bought separately.

And I’m pretty sure it’s not me - I also have a BG that hits within a couple inches with everything.

Any thoughts?

Only have 157 rounds of mostly WWB and Hornady American Gunner through mine. 1.75" groups at 15 yards with the HAG and then moved to 25 yards for steel fun. Not one hiccup with the rear grip. Now that you're both cognizant of it, I'd think that issue is over

My wife loves her EZ. It’s the only larger-than-22 gun that’s she actually enjoys shooting. She raved about it so much it convinced my mom to go buy one. LOL

Normally, I put a piece of old bicycle inner tube on my grips, for a firm, semi sticky feeling, grip. I cover the entire grip, with the appropriate sized old tube. Cheap, and works better than anything I have found!

I wonder how that would work out on that grip safety? (Insert smilie here)

We got my mom one. She has Essential Tremors which also makes her grip and finger/hand strength very weak. She can shoot it very well, though I did have to remind her to keep a good "choked up" grip to keep the grip safety depressed.

I'd prefer it didn't have the grip safety, but I guess they felt the need for it since it doesn't have any sort of disconnector like a strike fired gun, or other passive safety system. No thumb safety either. Nice gun, very accurate and fun to shoot. I'm so glad they made it!

Default Smith & Wesson 380 Shield

I bought one for myself about 2 months ago. Shot about 400 rounds out of it during the two times that I have had it to the range. No problem at all with it. Only neg thing that I can say is the size, just a little too large to comfortably carry. I have a Glock 42 that I like and carry a lot. I wish that it had a safety like the Shield.

I have held ad LGS the various M&P bith shield, 9c and full size, and 380EZ all with the thumb safety. I found it almost impossible to work malfunction thoe drills and even sling shot with the safety. The safety is absolutely in the way and puts the safety back on. It is obnoxious and I find it to be an unacceptable danger for a SD gun because of it.

I am glad they make versions w/o safety or I would have never bought an M&P if all I could have gotten is a safetied version. I am glad they make a safety version for those who don’t share my view.
