Default M&P Shield 45 Misfeed on 7 round mags

The past two range qualifications I experienced misfeeds on both of my 7 round magazines. Gun would fire two rounds and then not feed ammo. My 6 round mag worked perfectly - no problems at all. Only had problems with both 7 round mags. I am using factory 230 grain FMJ. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

After loading the magazine, give it a smack against the heel of your hand to seat the cartridges all the way to the rear of the magazine. Every FTF I've had with my Shield 45 has been when I forgot to do ths.

Make sure you're using the mags with the new style followers. Several threads about it on this forum for more info. New ones have a little notch along the edge...

I noticed on my mags both 6 and 7 that a bit of over mold plastic would grab the magazine slot and stick. A bit of sanding took care of it. Even with the new followers I would suggest sanding the rough edges smooth. I would also suggest popping out the magazine slot just a bit where the release contacts and holds the mag in place. Gives more purchase to the release/catch and prevents a magazine release which was prevalent on the older design.

I have two, Shield .45s. First one was flawless for 500+ rounds (400 FMJ 230, 100 JHP), so bought a second. GTG for, about 250 rounds of FMJ and started to have an occasional failure to feed, which would clear with a light tap to the rear of the slide. Eleven FTF over 150 rounds, mostly with two 6 round magazines.

Returned one magazine to Brownells. S&W got my report, send a shipping label and had the Shield less than 30 days. Got it back yesterday, they polished the feed ramp and chamber, replaced the extractor.

Today, 100 rounds of S&B 230 FMJ and 18 JHP, no malfunctions, even with the prior failure prone magazine. We'll see how the the next 200 rounds go.

I'd preferred to not have to send in a new quality firearm, but S&W dealt well with the situation.

Yes had the same problem, I now clean the magazines with Rem Oil, strip them down and spray with Rem Oil then wipe down. Not lubing the inside, cleaning them. Then I clean the followers with the same stuff and wipe them off. The Rem Oil has silicone and helps the feeding. Went to the range yesterday, no miss feeds.

No problems with Shield at range today. Just checked all of my magazines, they are all the new style with the cutout on the followers.
