Exclamation "Click" sitting on desk?!!?

Hey Ya'll. New here. Day one, 12 hours old, Just got my new Performance Center M&P Shield 45, with ported barrel and slide, and tritium night sights. Did my homework, even shot a friends.

Sitting on my desk unloaded (ammo on desk, looking at it). Bit of dry firing to get the trigger feel. Re-cocked, empty, sitting on desk. I'm looking at the web for a holster and possibly a trigger up-mod, when I hear a distinct "CLICK"!. Nothing near it, been sitting for a few minutes. No one but me and the sleeping wife here so no funny business (practical jokes, etc). I pick it up and squeeze the trigger, its in it's "Been Fired/Needs Re-Cocked" position!

What The Literal HECK?!?!? Has this happened to Anyone Else? I'm genuinely concerned.

I would try this again and see if it happens again. But I really think I would contact S&W by phone and relate this information and see what they think regardless. Certainly if you hear the click again, that one needs to go back for a serious examination.

That is odd, but if the trigger was not pulled, the striker block would have prevented a discharge should there have been a round in the chamber.

You can verify this yourself by doing following:
* remove the barrel from the slide
* try to move the firing pin forward and note that the pin does not protrude from the slide
* depress the striker block and repeat - you should see the firing pin protrude

This should not happen. thewittmp is correct and the gun wouldn't have fired, but it still shouldn't happen.

I know it's new and this is frustrating, but I'd send it to S&W.

Failing that, there are some things we can check. Any chance you can post a pic of the sear block? Take the slide off and take a pic of the back of the frame like this:

Another thought, did you have a magazine in it?
If not, could the sear-disconnect lever have been stuck partially down?
I tried mine, and it only stays down or up and does not like to be in a half-way position, but it could be possible with no magazine.

No Magazine was in it. Your question is entirely possible, especially as I'm still unfamiliar with this new-2-me pistol's specifics. I've tried to replicate it without a magazine and with (empty mag and full one inserted after cocking), to no avail.

I'm going to disassemble, inspect, lube, and reassemble. I'll then try to replicate it again. I'm a long time gun owner, and use a Glock for work. Just surprised me to hear an unmanipulated inanimate object just Click loudly, especially my new gun. I'll let ya'll know what comes of this.

Lastly, it's good to know that regardless, it could not have fired. Was pretty sure of this, but always best to ask. Thanks.

I'd be inclined to put it back in the same condition and then try tapping it repeatedly against a soft pine board from different directions (OK a nylon or leather mallet will work too if you're anti-bubba) to see if you can get it to slip off. But I'd still feel better sending it back for a recheck. Actually, if I was sure about what you reported, certain it wasn't a noise caused by something else in the room, I'd have a hard time trusting that gun for a long time unless Smith found and fixed a problem that would explain the occurrence. Sorry.

I have seen a handful of reports that the .45 shields trigger over travel stop notch can sometimes hold the trigger in the rearward position unintentionally. I wonder if that could have been a factor?

But regardless, like others have said, with the striker safety plunger presence, you had no chance of a discharge, even if it was loaded.

No, this cannot be a factor. As the trigger is held to the rear, the trigger bar is moved out from under the sear as the slide moves. So, even if the trigger is locked back, the sear will still set and the trigger bar will not reset until the trigger is moved forward.

Since the OP said the trigger could move, I suspect it wasn't stuck back.

I could see how if there's too much play in the slide mounting on the frame rails, the striker might slip from behind the sear.

I'd try cocking the striker and then giving the slide some firm wiggling to see if the striker clicks.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. YOU HAVE EVERY REASON TO BE "genuinely concerned".......

THE GOOD THING IS THAT IT HAPPENED NOW, WHILE IT WAS SITTING ON YOUR DESK---RATHER THAN IN THE MOMENT WHEN YOU DREW IT TO DEFEND YOURSELF, BECAUSE THE SHTF......

I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH S&W SEMI-AUTOS, SO I CAN'T HELP YOU AT ALL. I LOOK FOWARD TO SEEING WHAT THE FORUM EXPERTS HAVE TO SAY,,,,,

Never heard mine click like that, but I'm pretty sure it growled like a bulldog when I ran some hollow points thru it.

Seriously, has a magazine spring been considered? Maybe follower not fully extended when you put it down. And then decided to finally extend fully...with an audible click..

Call Smith.

Send it back.

I’d be unwilling to carry or shoot that gun until I had an explanation for the malfunction from Smith and a factory fix that addressed the stated explanation.

Yup...this is the smartest and safest course to follow.

I would not even joke about loading that thing, until it had a clean bill of health.

I would think even less about carrying it until said time.
