OK, got my M&P .22 compact from FEDEX today. Took it out of the box and disassemble. Looks like a little debris in the barrel and definitely picked up some black from the barrel. I had cleaned it when I sent it, so it sure looks like they shot it and the paperwork says they shot 3 magazines and it was OK. Now if they shot 3 magazines of mini mags then it's all BS because it would shoot those when it left.

Repair order says this .

Evaluate/Repair
Polish Barrel/Chamber
Repair Barrel

So really not much information. I can definitely tell that they polished the feed ramp, but I can't tell much of anything else. Really was not having feed problems so I'm not sure why they did.

So, cleaned it, lubed it and I will take it to the range tomorrow and see if it will extract properly.

I'm not real optimistic but hoping for the best. If not....it's going back again.

HJB,

I would go further and ask about the "repair barrel"
Exactly what does that mean? S&W can be very vague
on the problem issues and what was done to repair
them.

I agree that is pretty vague. I wish they would have detailed the "damage" and what they did to repair it.

I'm still going to wait until I get a chance to shoot it before I decide what my next steps will be.

I certainly gave them much more information with the gun when I sent it to them than they gave to me in return.

They got it turned around pretty quickly; perhaps it was your detailed description that allowed that to happen. Looking forward to hearing if it is fixed!

OK, here is the first range report.

Fired Federal Bulk 40 grain hollow point, and Aguila 40 grain Super Extra. Shot 40 rounds of the Federal, followed by 40 rounds of the Aguila, then 40 more of the Federal.

First magazine, had 1 fail to feed but it did eject the prior casing, and just had to rack the slide. Did not have any other failures until I went through the first 40 Federal and the 40 Aguila, and then on the second magazine back on the Federal, had 2 fail to feed failures but again the spent casing was ejected. So, just rack the slide and go.

So, bottom line....I'm ecstatic ! Better results that I was expecting for sure. 3 fail to feed out of 120 rounds is nothing.

So for now, I'm going to claim victory, write a nice letter to Smith and Wesson and keep on shooting. Wife is so excited to go shoot now too.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help on this problem. I would probably have never sent this back to S&W without the people on this forum.

Smith and Wesson covered the shipping both ways and had the gun back to me in 3 weeks and 2 days after they got it. Very pleased with their service on this item.

Follow up question, did the same magazine cause the problems both times? Just curious.

I can't answer that question as I was not tracking which mag I was using at any time.

I completely agree with that and am perfectly satisfied with the gun if it continues to perform this well, and am very satisfied with the service I got from Smith and Wesson.

Just curious, but in the process of writing your book, how many rounds out of how many different 22LR bottom feeders have you shot? And according to The Book of Wavygravy, what FTF frequency is acceptable?

Inquiring minds want to know - since 22LR semi-auto pistols are so notorious for being ammo picky.

Sounds like it's working well now. Most RF guns will function better with particular brands of ammo. It seems that yours doesn't "like" Federal bulk, so an easy solution is not to buy that again. For cheap bulk ammo I have found that it's hard to beat CCI Blazer. It's also one of the least expensive brands available.

That's easy. I don't write books, and I don't shoot .22LR bottom feeders. I shoot pistols and calibers that work.

Mine loves Federal bulk now and I will continue to use it or any other ammo I find good deals on. I can get the Federal bulk for .03 cents a round sometimes. I also have about 1000 rounds of CCI Blazer which I will shoot after I'm out of the last box of Federal that I currently have, and I liked the Aguila 40 rounds that I shot and sometimes I can get it as cheap as the other two. The Federal bulk is what I shot to get results for S&W when I sent the gun back because it was the worst example I had and that's what I wanted them to see. I've got a bunch of CCI mini mags too, but I didn't use it to test the repairs because it always would shoot that. But, I don't intend to buy any more mini mags if the gun will shoot Federal and Blazer.

It would be acceptable to me for a plinker using cheap ammo. I run whatever I can find cheapest in my .22 Compact and have perhaps a slightly lower failure rate than that. If it bothered me I'd buy better ammo, but it doesn't.

The standards for plinkers and carry guns are very different.

No plinkin' with no stinkin' 22's huh?
To each his own, but for my money you're missing out on some cheap range fun if you don't own and shoot at least one 22 semi-auto pistola! Of course you're also skipping some minor frustrations too.

It's a 22....it's definitely not a carry gun. It's a range gun mostly for my wife, but I get the grief when it doesn't go bang !

I would not accept a carry gun or ammo that had 3 failures in 120 rounds ! I expect my Glock 19 to go bang every single time I fire it and it does.

Just for fun and lots of time available due to the China virus, thought I would update experience with my repaired S&W M&P Compact 22.

Shot lots of rounds, like maybe 600 or 700 after getting it back, in probably 150-200 round sessions. I had a single failed-to-eject in the first two sessions using Federal Bulk and Blazer Brass ammo. In the last session before we went into hiding, fired 150 rounds without a single failure ! So the wife was ecstatic !

Had not shot until yesterday since April because of being in lockdown due to senior status and prior heart issues.

But, son-in-law bought a Glock44 and we had to go shoot it and see how it performed with various cheap range ammo brands since we had heard of lots of issues with those guns. So, we put about 400 rounds thru it with Winchester, Remington Golden Bullets, Federal Bulk, Blazer Brass, and some CCI Quiet ammo.

There were zero issues with any of the ammo except the CCI Quiet would not cycle the gun, which we kind of expected and just wanted to see what would happen. Otherwise the Glock44 performed flawlessly and about half of the rounds he ran with his suppressor and still had zero issues. The gun feels exactly like my Glock19 and no sight adjustments at all were necessary to shoot very accurately at 7 yards.

So, he is very happy with it and I was going to buy one before my M&P Compact was repaired by Smith and Wesson. I still might buy one if ammo ever becomes more available just because I like that it feels just like my Glock 19.

I also put 140 rounds though my S&W and again it fired flawlessly ! Very happy with it as well.

I must admit I was very itchy to go to the range and my membership is about to expire and I had a free admission to take my son-in-law that expires next week too. So seems like the stars just aligned with the new gun and membership expiration so we put on our Chinese virus masks and braved it. Also had to put about 50 rounds through my Glock 19 and that was great to get to do too.

Range doing a very good job with social distancing and hand sanitizer availability.

HJB,

I'm curious if you ever got any more information about the actual repairs they performed? There's not much to "repair" on a barrel, but I wonder if it may have been misaligned when first built and they fixed that.

I bought a new one in May, but I haven't had much chance to shoot it since, only about 400 rounds.
