Default Shield magazine carry

Do any members here use the "watch pocket" on their jeans to carry a single stack mag? I found that a 7 or even 8 round Shield mag fits very well. I haven't had any issues, yet, with it falling out.

If you're lefty that would be great. Spare mag is much easier to retrieve from the weak hand side. I use a Reload Wrap mag carrier in my left front pocket

Also, you're quite the lurker, LOL. You've been a member for 10 years and this is your first post.

Great idea, as long as you don't loose it.

I'm currently carrying my spare magazine in a Wilderness single stack horizontal pouch. The velcro closure on the belt mounting strap allows the carrier to be placed on or removed from the belt without loosening or removing the belt. Vertical pouches are also available, but the horizontal pouch conceals better IMO.

I'm right handed so I carry a smaller folding knife in that watch pocket. The spare mag rides in my left side pocket along with my flashlight.

I am a lefty and have done this with my Shield mags much of the time. Some watch pockets are tight enough and deep enough that it works just fine but some are too loose or wide so I am worried about loosing the mag. In some other cases, the pocket is so deep that it makes it difficult to retrieve the mag from the pocket without pushing up from the bottom.

Carrying a spare mag is good. Carrying it in the wrong place and unsecured just doesn't make sense.

Get a real mag carrier. Mount it on your belt in the correct place to access it with your off hand.

As a leftie I’ve used my jeans watch pocket for either a spare mag for my LCP, or speed strip for a J frame for more years than I care to count.

The advantages to a belt mounted (especially IWB) mag carrier:
1. Same position no matter what pants. Therefore quicker/easier to access. Many pants don’t have “watch pockets”.
2. Same height. Easier to access. Watch pockets vary in size and depth. The mag is not always in the same position.
3. Secure, even in a fight when rolling on the ground. Pocket friction is not the same as Kydex friction.
4. Can be positioned on side opposite gun hand. Watch pockets are only @ 2 o’clock.
5. More concealed. Exposed part of mag is above the belt rather than below.
6. Cartridges are retained securely, protected in the mag carrier. Cartridges sometimes eject from a mag when jostled in a pocket.
7. Less wear and tear on the pants. Pocket carry allows more dirt to get in a mag, and the mag wears out the cloth of the pocket.

So, watch pocket mag carry may seem like a cheap, easy, simple way to carry an extra mag. It is, just like a floppy generic nylon holster retains a gun. There are better, more serious ways to prepare for a life threatening event. They cost more, but they are worth it.

Won't work in the Wranglers I wear. Being a lefty, the watch pocket is good for a J Frame speed strip or a Sig 938 6 round mag.
