Default Not Happy with S&W Customer Service

I sent in a M&P 40 last week because with the slide locked backed and when I slam in a loaded mag the slide disengages and chambers a load. Got it back today and of course it's still doing the very same thing. I'm a little ticked right now! No, make that a lot ticked!

It's normal. That's how every 1.0 operates. Haven't seen one not do that.

That was my understanding, before I bought my 1.0s. That's the way mine operate, which is fine with me.

I am careful with my 1.0 compact... it's easy to pinch my hand with the mag if I'm not paying attention.

Yep, the 1.0 M&P pistols typically release a locked slide when a loaded magazine is seated. I think that feature was removed in the 2.0 pistols.

That is 100% normal with the 1.0 M&Ps.

I had the M&P 40c and it did that as well with every mag I had.

Smith cant "fix" a problem that doesnt exist.

That’s normal! So I’ve spoken to two CS Reps about it and they didn’t mention that! Shouldn’t that have been a recall?

There is nothing wrong with the gun as it operates as designed ~ therefore a recall does not apply.

Mine does it too. Startling at first but now just a feature.

Grand Power K100s do it almost every time and a hearty slap when inserting the mag on a Steyr M9 will give the same result.

Oddly enough, I don't recall this happening with either of my M&P 1.0 pistols. Maybe I need to get to the gym.

My 1.0's do it too, although not consistently. I agree it's not a feature, but it is what it is.

Nature of the polymer beast. First M&P I ever saw was a Detroit Police issue 45, friend of mine was an officer. When he inserted the mag, the slide slammed forward into battery. I thought something was wrong. Asked the gurus at my LGS about it, they said no big deal. Glocks do the same thing.

I'm willing to bet it has something to do with the slide. All 5 of my full size 1.0's do this. I changed out one of my slides to one of the new Faxon slides and it will not slam forward and chamber a round. I'm actually a bit disappointed.

Ky Bob, I liked that feature on my 1.0's, wish my 2.0's had it.
It's one less thing you have to do when you're in a hurry, whether competition or self defense.
The slide will only slam forward on it's own when a mag is inserted hard.
If you want the slide to stay back until you are ready to slingshot it, try inserting the mag more gently.

Compare the notches for the lock on both slides. Chances are the Faxon is either a bit deeper or angled to help retain the lock in position.

As others have stated, no, it's not something to recall. It's not specifically designed to do that. It's just a by product of the design.

The 2.0 slide lock was specifically designed to stop this from happening. Personally I don't think it's an upgrade.

Even so, my question is, why do you think this is a problem?

Many shooters, including those who shoot competitively, cry if the slide doesn't slam forward when forcefully inserting a magazine.

I don't own an M&P semi auto, but after learning this I will be looking for one. This feature is one that usually has to be added to a competition gun. Sounds like the perfect setup for a production class gun.

I've had bad experiences with Smith & Wesson recently as well. My Shield's manual safety has three positions. Off, false on, and on. It makes a loud positive/audible click for the "fasel on", yet, they sent it back saying it was within spec. Moreover, the trigger is horrible. I've had six M&P's (multiple gens 1.0 & 2.0), and this was by far the worst trigger and it is a Performance Center Shield pulling between 6.5 and 7.5 on my Lyman digital trigger scale. Half the time I dry fire it the front sight disrupts and I've never had an M&P (or any of my six Glocks) do the same.

Another time I purchased a factory new M&P and there as a gouge in the slide I didn't notice until I got home (I didn't notice it at the gun store). I didn't send it back because it could have happened at the shop, but I doubt it (it was in backstock). That speaks to quality control rather than customer service, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

Another time I got an M&P pistol new from backstock and the tool had been bound up into the frame (and the hole it goes into was oval). They sent it back saying it was within spec as well.

It's not just Smith & Wesson, however; Beretta's quality control is perhaps the worst. Check this out. They said this was perfectly fine even though the replaced the night sight that I damaged installing it. In other words, the replaced the sights for free, but they were not willing to replace the sights. They also told me night sights only last 3-4 years.

Mumford, beretta px4 storm milling issue.jpg

I have another M&P on the way (Subcompact), I hope this one is in better shape than my PC Shield. If it's not, I at least hope they take care of me this time, but it's hit or miss with Smith & Wesson. I sent one Glock in for service and they were phenomenal. I was having brass to the face. After they received it, they called me to let me know it was throwing brass in their face as well. They fixed and test fired and sent it back operating perfectly.

My M&P 40S&W full size does this periodically. I am not in the habit of deliberately "slamming" my magazines in the gun.

Well, I can only speak from my own experience. I have a FS, a Compact and a Shield (all 9s, all 1.0s). I can do it on my FS and Compact, but I have to really whack it (until it hurts). Even then, it's not consistent. My Shield won't. Full disclosure, it a lock, not release, so I overhand rack for mag changes. My PPQs do it rarely. My Beretta and 1911s never (right, not poly). My Sigs 2022 and 320 don't.

I consider it a fault but I live with it.
