shield thumb safety
what are the fixes for the OG shield thumb safety. mine takes both hands to flip it on and off. checked it no burrs, use to a 1911, but this is smaller and tougher to swipe than even my glock
wish smith would make one like the new ez.

Your Glock has a thumb safety too ?
I don't think it's meant to be used to swipe off during a draw. Too small for that.
I, and many others only use it when shoving the pistol into a holster, or loading and unloading. That little safety should be OFF once the Shield is in the holster, and stay off.
Being hard to engage/disengage means it's not going to inadvertently get engaged when you don't know it.

That's odd. I have never had an issue with my Shield's safety, I can flick it off as I draw, using only my thumb. I have the first generation Shield 9mm.
Has it always been hard to switch off?

My wife has a 1st gen shield 9mm with thumb safety and it is no problem flicking on or off. I would say its defective.

It is your choice but I have a Gen 1 with the safety and never use it. I am a lefty. I would have preferred it without the safety as is now the choice but that was not an option at the time.

I would have that gun looked at, I have a Gen 1 and as others have posted I can work the safety easily. I pretty much can engage and disengage with the side of my thumb.

Mine is easy also. Not quite as easy to put back on but not in a rush to do that. I do wish it had a hair more of a width like the Ruger LC9S. I also wish the other M&P’s with a thumb safety had a left side only safety and not nearly as wide as they are. I used to have a Ruger SR9 and the thumb safety on that was perfect. Little bit of a ledge and a nice positive click to it.

What he said. My 1.0 is stiff, but workable with my right thumb once the gun is holstered. Solid and positive is how I would describe it.

store and gunsmiths have both looked at it and they cant see anything and they also comment how hard it is to operate. don't know if California compliant is the reason.
I've carried 1911 all my life and always carry proper (w/ safety on) but after a major accident cant handle 45 or 40 recoil any more in the wrists so had to down size.
sorry do know glock has no safety, didn't proof before posted

The CA "features" don't affect the manual safety.
Did the store and/or gunsmith actually remove the sear housing to check the detent, spring and safety lever?
Other than work the safety on/off a few hundred times, you can call S&W CS. You may have to send your gun back in.

No problem swiping the safety off on my Shield .45. It takes a bit more effort to put it back on safe.

The .45 Shield has a larger safety lever, and clicks on and off more positively than the one on the 9mm and .40.
The safety on the 9mm/40 is pretty tiny.

The safety on my M&P .45 works great.
I just ordered a .45 Shield 2.0 without the safety because I've never used it on my full size M&P.

I'm in agreement with sandog on this.

I'm thinking about buying the Shield 2.0 Performance Center and the only thing stopping me is the safety. I wish they didn't come with the safety like the standard Shield 2.0 you can get it without one.

I don’t know about that. I don’t carry my Shield much anymore but when I did it was safety on. Sweeping off in the draw was effortless. No hard pressure to push down just a firm pressure against the side of the safety to make sure it didn’t slip off, but it never did. But I can see carrying with safety off once it was in the holster.
I also can’t imagine it accidentally coming on as it takes more effort to put it back on. And carry off safe or not, if you’re gonna carry a gun with a safety, and all of my semi autos have one except for a couple of DAO third gen guns that I don’t carry, you gotta practice with it so in the unlikely event it did become engaged when you didn’t want it to you sweep off on the draw.
I wish the safety levers on the Compact, full size, and EZ guns weren’t ambidextrous and obnoxiously big. If S&W can offer the plugs to take the safety out, why don’t they offer a single sided safety?

Mine has the safety because that’s what they had available when I saw them. I agree with Sandog, I don’t think its designed to carry with the safety on. Mines pretty stiff, but that just assures me its not going to be easily bumped into the ON position.

My Shield in .45 has a TS that works just fine. I always have the safety ON unless I'm ready to shoot sumthin and I just flick down the TS when I draw the pistol. Seems to work real well for me. I do have quite a few rounds through this pistol now, but the TS has never been overly difficult to operate easily with the thumb. JMHO
