Default Red Dot Sight for M&P 9mm 1.0

I am looking to get a red dot sight for my 1.0 M&P 9mm. The options appear to be buy the sight, send sight and slide to have the slide milled to fit, or the S&W Core kit, provided I can still find one for the 1.0. My older eyes, especially after cataract surgery, need some help with the pistol.

What are the recommendations and what to avoid? I am looking at the Delta Point or Trijicon RMR.

Welcome to our forum. There can be many replies to your post as people with different set ups for different purposes share their views. Defining yours a little more for us may focus the answers you want.

The Search feature here is a little weak, but worth a try: Red Dot Sights.

Here is a post from a few years ago to get started:
RED DOT SIGHT CONSIDERATIONS

I have four pistols with RDS. One full size 9mm M&P (pictured) with the slide milled for the Trij RMR. One Shield 9mm M&P with a Shield (brand) RMS milled on the slide. A Glock 19 + a 17 each with an RMR milled.

All have co-witnessed iron sights. Mine are all set up for personal defense/every day carry.

Both sights you mention are great quality, with the RMR usually declared the King. The Delta Point is somewhat larger and I believe sits higher, making it harder to co-witness iron sights. The new Holosun 507c (compact) has the same footprint as the RMR, costs somewhat less and has impressed many reviewers.

I am not a fan of generic mounting systems like the CORE. They start off as compromises and don’t get any better. If you don’t know what sight you want, a CORE is an OK option to try different ones, but you can do that for free by finding other nearby shooters with RDS who will let you shoot their’s. If you know what sight you want, and you are on the right track, mill your slide for that sight.

As you've discovered, there are many MRDSs to choose from. Your intended purpose and budget will be important to a decision.

Briefly, if this is a duty gun (hard service) the Trijicon RMR and maybe the Holosun 507T are considerations.

If it's for range use or competition, the DeltaPoint Pro, Trijicon SRO, Holosuns, and the Vortex Venom need a look.

The CORE Slide kit was the way I chose. I went with the 5" Ported but Grab-A-Gun has 5" and 4.25" in stock. I also went with a Trijicon RMR. Got mine on sale so it was almost the same price as some of the less expensive options.

Just beware that the Delta Point Pro model will not fit the CORE slide. So your choice of slide may be driven buy the optic you choose.

My eyes are pretty awful as well. I went the inexpensive route on my Shield 2.0 9mm. I bought a Sig Rome Zero, around Christmas for I think $160. I had my slide milled for $90. So for about $250 I got a red dot on my shield.

However It took forever to both get the Red Dot and to have the slide milled. I was very patient..... And of course I got it back a just in time for the pandemic to hit. So it's been sitting for a couple of months . But tomorrow is a range day!

BTW you'll need to figure out co witnessing. There's not much room on the shield, so I lost my dovetail. But the Romeo Zero has a notch for co witnessing. I'll find out tomorrow how good it works. I can see the front sight, but it's barely there. Wish me luck.

Docdoc If you don't mind porting direct from s&w may be the best price for a kit -
PERFORMANCE CENTER(R) PORTED SLIDE KITS M&P(R)9L | Smith & Wesson

Red dots !! Look thru the lens of any dot you may want Many have a tint that does not work will in low light you might not need a light for under your old normal !! Its alo nice to have a " shake awake " dot optic and some of the largest lens clearest lens go to sleep and there simple off . I also very nice to not have to remove the darn optic to change batteries !!

I run a Trijicon RM02 6.5moa dot that works very will in most any normal light lens is smaller than some more modern dot optics but now that pistols a HD fun some things carry pistol and I found the lens coating lacking in low light when a tac light should not be needed .

Venom is great in light light but when it turns off like on a night stand You have to push the button to re start . I picked up a early Romeo 1 cheap off a buddy that updated his pistol to the newer Pro model . So far its a real nice optic . Turns on a the slightest touch , clear enough and wide lens but sights need to be taller yet !!

Sheild RMS for me is still a maybe dot optic along with holosun . Sheild RMS small over all and CS is lacking in the USA being a UK company and Holosun is always coming out with a newer great version . WOW . There lens are good and clear and some are ather large and they have a small'er enclosed version in the works so dirt , mud and rain would be a minor issue and some take a RMR pattern . Delta point has a very tall base large lens and the army uses them ?? They can use a leupold made rear sight that attached to the optic and a front sight from dawson precision may cover that need .

I'm not ready yet to go dot optic on a carry gun yet ?

IF you mill your slide you could ask Parker machine IF they will mill for the M&P adaptors base if supplied then your not locked in to any one dot optic brand .
