Default New M&P 2.0 9MM Compact Issue

Looking for thoughts on an issue

Bottom line up front – New M&P 2.0 9MM, after 45 rounds the gun stopped automatically extracting, ejecting spent casing & attempting to load a new round in the chamber.

Situation: New M&P 2.0 9MM w/4” barrel, cleaned and lubricated, took to range the next day for Myself and 2 sons to shoot. Federal American Eagle 115Grain FMJ AMMO

Each of us alternate shooting the gun putting 30 rounds through it – I then take my next turn for 15 rounds. Son #2 in taking his next turn, inserts a mag, using the slide release advances the slide forward and takes a shot, BAM, gun works as advertised, then aims again, pulls trigger, click, no shot – he keep the gun pointed down range for 30 seconds, releases mag, pulls slide back and casing extracts/ejects from chamber. Son reinserts mag in order to continue firing, same things happens again, gun shoots then next attempt goes click, repeat clearing with same results as before. Son inserts a different mag and gets the same results.

At this point I think he maybe he is limp wristing it all of a sudden, so I take the gun and you can guess the results, same thing. At that point the range official come by and I describe the problem. He says to let him take the gun and he will look it over – he comes back about 10 minutes later and states he thinks the gun is a little dry, I reply, It’s a brand new gun and was cleaned and lubricated the night before, he then says, well since it is new, it is a break in thing and will probably be fine in about 500 rounds. I am thinking that I understand the break in thing but I do not believe that is the cause of this issue.

So at this point my other son ask if he can try it and yes he experienced the same issue, only this time after the first click, he manually racks and it fires, manually racks again and it fires, he does this for 5 shots, I then take the gun and do the same thing, shoot then manually rack for another 5 rounds. At this point we put the gun away and shoot a 380 we had brought along.

So for 45 rounds the gun worked as advertised, then the issue started. On the drive home I am thinking that in the process of firing was the gun not charging itself, then I think no, the trigger was resetting. Then I thought, how is it we were not getting a feeding issue if the casing was not being extracted, then I thought the gun could not have been feeding the next round, because when we cleared the gun, the only thing that fell out was the spent casing, no new round. So not only was it not extracting the spent casing it was not trying to chamber another round either. So I am looking for thoughts, ideas on what the problem maybe. Remember, 3 different shooters all experience the same issue.

That is an odd one. When you manually rack the slide it ejects the spent casing. If the slide was moving back and not ejecting the casing it should cause a miss feed as it came forward and tried to chamber another round. Did you watch the slide action when this happened?
Really odd in my book. What is the ammo you were using? Maybe way under powered?

After you fire, and the slide returns to rest, is the gun in full battery? (Look it up if you don't know what im talking about, there's an excellent video on YouTube) Some m&p's have an issue where they don't return to full battery and thus won't fire another round. Mind you that this is a safety measure and if the gun would fire out of battery it would blow apart in your hand. Here's a video explaining it: YouTube

I highlighted what I feel is the most important part. If the gun is not even ejecting the spent casing I have to think the slide is not moving back much at all, as it wouldn't take too much to give enough room for that to happen.

As stated above if the casing was somehow stuck in the chamber and the slide did cycle there would be a miss feed as the next round couldn't load. Since the gun works when racked by hand after each shot that pretty much rules out stuck casings anyways.

I'd have to think the slide is not cycling after the shot. It happens fast, maybe you didn't notice that it's not happening. As to why it's not cycling I don't know, but I'd try some different ammo just to rule that out as a cause. If the same thing occurs I'd think it's time for warranty work.

Shame you're having problems with a brand new gun. I have the exact same gun and it's been trouble free from day one.

Definitely not just a battery issue. I mean, it might not be going fully into battery, but that's not your problem. The problem is that it's not extracting the round. A more telling issue is that it's not ejecting the round and not feeding a new round.

You are getting a click on the next trigger press so, the slide is moving at least 1/4" which is enough to reset the sear. However, it seems as though the slide is not moving far enough to catch the next round in the mag. Also, it's not moving far enough to allow the spent casing to clear the chamber and be ejected.

Symptoms
  • Fires every time it's manually cycled.
  • Resets the trigger every time it's fired.
  • Doesn't eject the spent case or feed the next round.

Most likely cause
  • Slide not fully cycling.

The most likely cause of a slide not fully cycling is a squib load. A squib load is an under-powered round. This is usually caused by bad powder or no powder in the cartridge.

Questions:
  1. Did you notice a different sound when the malfunction started?
  2. Did the recoil feel noticeably less?
  3. Did you try any other ammo?

Very dangerous to manually cycle the gun if you've had a noticeably lighter load and the slide didn't fully cycle. There could be a bullet lodged in the barrel. That obviously didn't happen here.

Weird issue and I hope you get it sorted out.

By the way, that lever is not a slide release, it is a slide lock.
After inserting a fresh magazine, grab the back of the slide and use the slingshot method to chamber a round.
Read the manual if you don't want to take my word for it.

This sounds like the exact issue I’m having. Mine is used, so break-in issue would be mote. The range attendant mentioned the same thing about the ammo. Think I was using 115 gr. Had this same problem with my Ruger. I’m going to try 124 gr. Just found out about the ‘limp wrist’ issue. I’m going to check that also next time at range.
