m&p 40 night sights
i was looking at a m&p 40 with night sights and there wasnt much to see in good light. i was thinking they would be more like white dots in normal light. what would be a good price for a 1.0 40 with night sights? do night sights go bad over time? thanks for any help you can give

That really depends on the condition but if you find a nice le trade in they should go for ~$400 with one or two magazines.
Tritium sight will wear out over the years but some manufacturers can service them. I'd just upgrade. I believe the M&P has factory Trijicon sights, so I'd just get a set of HD sights and call it a day.

Unless there are white rings around the tritium vials, you're not going to see much in the light. They are, after all, night sights. However, there are plenty of night sights on the market with rings around the vials that are more visible in the light. Some people prefer the vials to be near invisible in light, leaving a (primarily) black sight, and some like the presence of white or other colored rings/backgrounds. And there are a variety of configurations, too. If I use night sights, I prefer a tritium dot in the front sight only, with plain black rear sights. It's all personal preference.
I can't help with the cost of a M&P with night sights, but sights can be fairly easily replaced. Prices can range anywhere from $80 to $150, depending on which ones you get. While some people install the sights themselves, others, with less experience or skill, can have gunsmiths install them. In my experience, the cost is typically $50. However, some gunsmiths/gun stores will install them for free if you buy the sights from them.
Night sights can dim over time. Typically, they have a half-life of about 12 years for green dots, meaning that in 12 years time they'll be about half as bright as they were when they were manufactured (not when they were sold...gotta watch out for that). Some dots are colored yellow or orange. Those will have a little less life in them. I want to say a half-life of 10 years, but I could be wrong. I had a set of night sights in my Beretta 92FS, green front with yellow rear, and they're completely dead after 20+ years. For a M&P, you can just replace them when they get too dim for you.
Hope that helps.

If you want to know the value of a gun you can go to gunbroker & view completed auctions for that same model in comparable condition. It should give you a pretty good ball park idea of the value.

When I called S&W to ask about my LE trade in M&P's manufacture dates, I asked them what brand night sights were on them.

My 357 Sig M&P has original night sights and is old enough they may be dimming a bit.

My M&P9 had Trijicon sights on it from the factory and the sights on my 40 look just like that. Unless the agency's armorer changes them? Hell I don't know...

FWIW, I think it was back 2-3 years ago when we were told in an armorer class that S&W had started making their own steel sights, including both standard 3-dot and night sights. Better control over the QC, especially in making night sights (which involve using an adhesive in affixing the tritium capsules). About time.
That was about the same time they'd bought the equipment necessary to do their own nitrocarburizing.
Of course, when you consider they spent $85Million to buy Taylor Brands knives (as part of their Battenfeld technologies company), comparatively it's probably not a huge investment to make your own steel sights and do your own (and for other gun companies) nitrocarburizing.
