This depends on local laws and also range regulations. Years ago we went to a range where they wanted to inspect our pistols at check in. They had to be in a hard case w/ a lock. I had several of them and kept using them even though we no longer go to that range. Then I got a new smaller bag which had two pistol rugs in it. They didn't even have zippers, just a velcro strap over the open side. So I install a trigger lock on the pistol and put it in the rug. Wow, this takes up a LOT less room in my range bag than the previous hard cases did. I used a marker to put an arrow on the outside indicating which way the barrel is pointing. Every place I have been including three different idpa ranges have been fine w/ this setup.
