Default Repairable or not? Shield 9mm

So long story short. My M&P shield got crushed by road commission trucks.

The polymer frame has cracked/broke/ and terribly misaligned.

I am assuming I will need to order a new shield because the polymer frames you cannot just order separately?

The slide seems perfectly fine.

I haven’t called SW yet, doubt it would be covered for warranty.

Just trying to figure out my next direction.

Probably will just end up buying a 40 shield that way I can swap the barrels.

Forgotten on the roof of the car?

I'd give them a call, may not be covered under warranty, but a "repair" (them putting a new frame to it) may be cheaper than a new gun.

I think you’ve now got a parts gun. You can keep it for parts or part it out and sell the parts to defray your loss.

You’ll need to buy a new gun.

Can’t hurt to call Smith, but I doubt that they’ll cover it.

If you send it to Smith and they offer to sell you a replacement at a slight discount, be aware that they’ll keep your gun.

Ok, so I have a pretty loud camaro. I tried to be super quiet while leaving 6am in the morning. I forgot to take the trash out, so I put the gun on top of my spoiler and completely forgot about it. (Black car, black gun, super dark out)I was more concerned about being quiet (pushed the car down my driveway towards the street)

It made it 6 miles (roughly 50ft from me turning into work) before falling off the car. I didn’t realize it wasn’t in my car until I left work and got home (6pm)

I have a lot of construction going on near my work. So my guess was it got ran over many times until someone ended up turning it in to the local PD. Took about a month until I got it back from the crime lab.

I found a .38 special Smith laying in the middle of a rural road a couple years ago. Turned it over to the local sheriff who eventually found the owner. Local (elderly) farmer had been out shooting on his land and drove off with the gun on the tailgate of his truck. Hey it happens. Repairable or not? Shield 9mm

Several years ago a member posted that his pooch gnawed upon his M&P frame, pictures showed his teeth got a good work out. S&W replaced the frame for something around $200.

did that one time with a 38 in a plastic gun case that I put on the bumper of my pick up while I loaded some other things into the bed, drove about 2 miles on a back road then onto a main road going about 50 when I realized what I did. I don't know how but it stayed where I left it.

If you can't get anywhere with Smith & Wesson and since your slide appears to be functional, you might try to find a M1.0 .40 S&W Shield. That way you should be able to swap out slides and magazines and have a 2 caliber gun. With ammo availability being spotty for the foreseeable future you would have options.

You can consider yourself very fortunate that all you ended up with was a broken handgun. Things could have gotten a whole lot worse for you had that negligently placed firearm some how ended up in the wrong hands. Lesson learned.....I hope!

A few years ago a citizen turned a glock .40 in to me at the PD that he had found on the side of the road. As soon as I looked at the serial number I suspected that it was one of ours. A check of my records revealed that it had been issued to one of our relatively new officers. I sat on it to see how long it took him to report it and let him sweat it out a bit. Yep, put it on the roof of his car and forgot about it. I doubt that he will repeat that mistake.

WOW that's quite a story!

Hope S&W will help you out, but if not, .40 Shields with an additional 9mm barrel/slide combo. is a very desirable option anyway!

Good luck to you!

One of our local police officers left his on his car as well. That was interesting until they found it. Thankfully they did.

How did the police know who owned the gun? Did you report it lost or stolen to them? I don't register mine anywhere and never will but do keep the serial numbers and would report a stolen one.

I reported it lost. The day after.

I’m Super grateful it was turned in and didn’t get into the wrong hands.

Here in MI you have 10 days to register handgun once purchased.

Yeah that's a bummer. I've seen a few handguns get the similar treatment, and in all honesty you'll probably be fine if you can source a spare frame, but I don't think I could personally trust it without burning up a fair bit of ammo to prove the combo, and in today's market that'll likely put you back the same amount as a new shield.

If it was mine I'd shadow box it and hang it in my gun room or over my safe as a reminder that while we're comfortable with them, we still need to treat them with more respect than our morning cup of coffee and not put our carry pieces on our cars, on the top of a toilet tank, or anywhere else you hear about them turning up.

If S&W will help that will be great. But for me, the gun is completely trashed. I might use the slide on another gun for practice or something but no way for defense.

Default Frame Value??

It would be an interesting piece of information to know how much S&W would charge for a new frame. Of course the frame is the registered firearm. The rest is just un-serialized parts hung on the frame. The frame is injection molded with a couple of metal inserts. Once the mold is created the incremental cost of a a frame is very small, an irony for the serial numbered part that is legally a firearm. I'm always amazed at how light a bare frame is. The barrel and slide feel like genuine firearm parts, but the rest of the bits feel like Daisy BB gun parts stamped out of light gauge sheet metal.

You learned a hard lesson I hope, so I won't ride you too much about this. Major lesson: Holster. Period. Few exceptions. If you had it in your hand or some other carry method that allowed this to happen, you need to completely change your priorities. Second lesson: gotta pay attention when armed.

A buddy of mine lost his entire gun bag several weeks back in the Clark County Forestry..
He had sat the bag on his RVs rear cargo area..
Within a few days He got a call on his cell phone that his gun had been found.. He had reported it lost along with the serial # a few days before to every police & sheriff in the area.
Keep records of any/all firearm purchases in fact take photos & keep em on you're hard drive..
Jamez was SO HAPPY when He got his Taurus G2 back..
It also taught Him a great Lesson Too!! = Pay Attention!!
If He'd had that pistol on his hip in a holster He wouldn't have lost the gun but the gun bag with ammo & magazines would have been lost anyhow..
I offered to let him try a few of holsters from my used stash & found one for a Glock that is all but perfect for the Taurus G2..
Lesson Learned..
It Happens..

Have you found out from S&W what they want for the new frame yet?

Could S&W remove the serial number off the trashed frame, and install it onto the newly manufactured frame? Thus it would not be considered a new firearm with new S/N. But rather a repair to the existing firearm sent back to the manufacturer for repair by the owner?

Will the 1.0 9mm slide fit on a new 2.0 40 S&W frame? If so, I would just seek out to purchase a 40 S&W shield and have the two caliber choices going forward.

My only regret for buying my 2.0-3.6” 9c, was that I didn’t buy the 40 S&W version so that I could buy the 9mm conversion barrel/slide and some mags for each.

Since "highly trained" leo's leave their guns in public restrooms, I really can't get too upset about what happened, or rather how that happened. Also, you didn't come here to get a lecture from a nobody you have never met.

But, like mentioned above, you have been very fortunate with the outcome and I think this will be a lesson to you.

I'd contact S&W and perhaps they can replace just the frame. But since your slide may be seen as a liability they might say no or won't offer any kind of warranty.

Another consideration could be selling it as parts gun and then buying a new one.

Either way, good luck.

No, they can't do that, or at the least, won't.

Hey Goldstar, your post reminded me of that of a detective team partner of mine. He lives on Long Island and our office was in Queens, NY, about a 40 mile trip at 0430.

So, for whatever reason, he gets distracted, I cant remember why and places his holstered GLOCK on the roof of his unmarked department SUV. He then drives the 40 miles to the office, at warp speed, as is his driving style. Now I don’t have to tell you, NY highways to include city streets, can and do resemble the surface of the moon. Well, he gets to the office, pulls into our secure garage, exits the vehicle...as he turns to get something from within, there is his GLOCK 19, on the roof, wedged ever so slightly under the luggage carrier rail.

He’s got to be the luckiest *** detective Ive know in my 40 years OTJ.

To the OP, what did S&W have to say when you called them?

He then drives the 40 miles to the office, at warp speed, as is his driving style. Now I don’t have to tell you, NY highways to include city streets, can and do resemble the surface of the moon. Well, he gets to the office, pulls into our secure garage, exits the vehicle...as he turns to get something from within, there is his GLOCK 19, on the roof, wedged ever so slightly under the luggage carrier rail.

He’s got to be the luckiest *** detective Ive know in my 40 years OTJ.
An NYPD Sergeant I occasionally shoot USPSA with told a few of us about a time he went shooting with his wife, went home and cleaned the guns, and accidentally went to work the next day with his wife's G19, instead of his. Said he was praying all day.

I was driving down the road and saw a parrot on the roof of the car beside me. I guess he forgot it too.

Default I would ask S&W.....

It won't be free but it may be economical to fix.

Curious as to what S&W said. Can’t imagine how anyone would even remotely consider this as qualifying as a warranty issue?

Was watching a YT video the other day were these two young men managed to cut down a tree so that it fell on top of their brand new chainsaw. They took it back to the store because it had a “warranty”. Needless to say it wasn’t covered under warranty.
