Default Repairable or not? Shield 9mm

So long story short. My M&P shield got crushed by road commission trucks.

The polymer frame has cracked/broke/ and terribly misaligned.

I am assuming I will need to order a new shield because the polymer frames you cannot just order separately?

The slide seems perfectly fine.

I havenít called SW yet, doubt it would be covered for warranty.

Just trying to figure out my next direction.

Probably will just end up buying a 40 shield that way I can swap the barrels.

Forgotten on the roof of the car?

I'd give them a call, may not be covered under warranty, but a "repair" (them putting a new frame to it) may be cheaper than a new gun.

I think youíve now got a parts gun. You can keep it for parts or part it out and sell the parts to defray your loss.

Youíll need to buy a new gun.

Canít hurt to call Smith, but I doubt that theyíll cover it.

If you send it to Smith and they offer to sell you a replacement at a slight discount, be aware that theyíll keep your gun.

Ok, so I have a pretty loud camaro. I tried to be super quiet while leaving 6am in the morning. I forgot to take the trash out, so I put the gun on top of my spoiler and completely forgot about it. (Black car, black gun, super dark out)I was more concerned about being quiet (pushed the car down my driveway towards the street)

It made it 6 miles (roughly 50ft from me turning into work) before falling off the car. I didn’t realize it wasn’t in my car until I left work and got home (6pm)

I have a lot of construction going on near my work. So my guess was it got ran over many times until someone ended up turning it in to the local PD. Took about a month until I got it back from the crime lab.

I found a .38 special Smith laying in the middle of a rural road a couple years ago. Turned it over to the local sheriff who eventually found the owner. Local (elderly) farmer had been out shooting on his land and drove off with the gun on the tailgate of his truck. Hey it happens. Repairable or not? Shield 9mm

Several years ago a member posted that his pooch gnawed upon his M&P frame, pictures showed his teeth got a good work out. S&W replaced the frame for something around $200.

did that one time with a 38 in a plastic gun case that I put on the bumper of my pick up while I loaded some other things into the bed, drove about 2 miles on a back road then onto a main road going about 50 when I realized what I did. I don't know how but it stayed where I left it.

If you can't get anywhere with Smith & Wesson and since your slide appears to be functional, you might try to find a M1.0 .40 S&W Shield. That way you should be able to swap out slides and magazines and have a 2 caliber gun. With ammo availability being spotty for the foreseeable future you would have options.

You can consider yourself very fortunate that all you ended up with was a broken handgun. Things could have gotten a whole lot worse for you had that negligently placed firearm some how ended up in the wrong hands. Lesson learned.....I hope!

A few years ago a citizen turned a glock .40 in to me at the PD that he had found on the side of the road. As soon as I looked at the serial number I suspected that it was one of ours. A check of my records revealed that it had been issued to one of our relatively new officers. I sat on it to see how long it took him to report it and let him sweat it out a bit. Yep, put it on the roof of his car and forgot about it. I doubt that he will repeat that mistake.

WOW that's quite a story!

Hope S&W will help you out, but if not, .40 Shields with an additional 9mm barrel/slide combo. is a very desirable option anyway!

Good luck to you!

One of our local police officers left his on his car as well. That was interesting until they found it. Thankfully they did.

How did the police know who owned the gun? Did you report it lost or stolen to them? I don't register mine anywhere and never will but do keep the serial numbers and would report a stolen one.

I reported it lost. The day after.

Iím Super grateful it was turned in and didnít get into the wrong hands.

Here in MI you have 10 days to register handgun once purchased.

Yeah that's a bummer. I've seen a few handguns get the similar treatment, and in all honesty you'll probably be fine if you can source a spare frame, but I don't think I could personally trust it without burning up a fair bit of ammo to prove the combo, and in today's market that'll likely put you back the same amount as a new shield.

If it was mine I'd shadow box it and hang it in my gun room or over my safe as a reminder that while we're comfortable with them, we still need to treat them with more respect than our morning cup of coffee and not put our carry pieces on our cars, on the top of a toilet tank, or anywhere else you hear about them turning up.

If S&W will help that will be great. But for me, the gun is completely trashed. I might use the slide on another gun for practice or something but no way for defense.

Default Frame Value??

It would be an interesting piece of information to know how much S&W would charge for a new frame. Of course the frame is the registered firearm. The rest is just un-serialized parts hung on the frame. The frame is injection molded with a couple of metal inserts. Once the mold is created the incremental cost of a a frame is very small, an irony for the serial numbered part that is legally a firearm. I'm always amazed at how light a bare frame is. The barrel and slide feel like genuine firearm parts, but the rest of the bits feel like Daisy BB gun parts stamped out of light gauge sheet metal.

You learned a hard lesson I hope, so I won't ride you too much about this. Major lesson: Holster. Period. Few exceptions. If you had it in your hand or some other carry method that allowed this to happen, you need to completely change your priorities. Second lesson: gotta pay attention when armed.
