Default Lubrication

Hey guys. I just got an ultrasonic cleaner. It works great but also lubricates. It's such a mess. While it gets into every crevice, it's a mess to clean up. Do I need to lubricate the whole gun after it's cleaned or can I just lube what's in the manual?

You can lube what the manual recommended. The friction points. Slide rails. I always put a drop in the barrel hood and inside the slide where the barrel hood contacts the slide. A drop on the barrel lug. A drop on the outside of the barrel. Doesn’t take much lube.

Use lube sparingly.
Follow your manual's recommendations.

watch Robert Burke, too much well meaning gun 'care' creates the most damage to the gun.

Sweet! Well, the U.S. came with an oil bath that's supposed to coat all the internals but I don't like a super oily gun. I didn't know if anything I can't coat with drops of oil could rust.

I don’t have any experience with Ultra Sonic cleaners but cleaning a handgun is a very simple process. Too much lube just gives the gun powder residue more areas to stick too.

You just want the moving parts to have lubricant. The parts that will have friction.

Since you've been a member of the Forum for three years, I'm guessing that you are not as "new to guns" as you used to be. Since you are posting in the M&P pistol section, I assume you are referring to cleaning and lubing an M&P. There's no reason to dunk your M&P pistol in oil. The polymer grip doesn't need it, and you can really mess up your slide, because no lubricants should ever be introduced into the striker channel. And even if you place the slide into the ultrasonic machine for cleaning only, be sure the striker channel and striker mechanism are dry before you reassemble your gun. As the others have said, just follow the manual's instructions for lubrication, using a quality lubricant (no WD-40!).

I've been cleaning by hand since I started shooting. Striker channel I knew should be free of lubricant but was unsure about lube bath, since I see multiple instances online of it being mentioned. I'd rather just clean and lube manually to be honest, I don't like oily tools.

I was concerned with other parts rusting deeper inside the firearm than I can see/lube

What are you using in your ultrasonic cleaner? You don't have to run a solution that includes a lubricant. A lot of choices out there, from Purple Power to Simple Green (the aircraft stuff that's safe for aluminum) to dedicated cleaning solutions. You can avoid a lot of the "over lube" by changing the solution.

For my M&P22 Compacts, I use a 1:4 mix of WD40 to odorless mineral spirits, but the frame get submerged upside down, and only to the "top" of the triggerguard, i.e. the frame above the trigger. Works like a champ, dries quickly, safe on polymer and the gun comes out looking new. The entire slide goes in; same result.

Here's a tip: you can better control parts coverage by using a Tupperware container inside the US cleaner, suspended in the liquid inside the basket. Hard to explain, but I fill my US tank with simple water, then inside the stainless basket, I suspend a Tupperware container filled with my cleaning solution, and then the gun goes into that. I have a couple of sizes of container (dollar store) based on what part's getting cleaned. That way I can control what gets submerged and cleaned, and can control what solution is used with what part. My AR BCGs get a much more aggressive carbon-cutter than other parts, for example.

I love the cleaner. It came with the kit, "gun" specific. It did a great job. I'm planning on second attempt to put hot water in a ziploc and put that in the ultrasonic to remove the cleaner. It's not an all in one cleaner, a separate bath for lube. But I want to manually lube my firearm. I thought the bath would get lube into the places I couldn't, so I figured it was safer.

Although I'm extremely jealous of your ultrasonic cleaner, I would absolutely not overthink the lubrication process. I believe most manuals for firearms point out exact lubrication points, and most of the time it really doesn't matter what lube you choose to use as long as your lubricating those points as indicated.

I bet if you took a poll of 100 different people on these forums, you'd probably get about 125 responses of different oils and lubricants based off of people's preferences and experiences. Simplicity is key, consult the manual, oil those points per the manual, and let her rip!
