MP 9 Shield: No Magazine Safety But Pin Is In Place
I found one thread with this same question but no concrete answer. New 9mm Shield. I can dry fire with no magazine and there is a caution printed on the side of gun that says something like capable of firing with no magazine. But I have the pin in place that the manual says indicates I have a magazine safety.
Just curious if there is an explanation for this discrepancy. I am imagining that there is a missing spring or something and they didn't update the manual or something along those lines.

I know that the M&P line offer both magazine disconnect and no magazine disconnect versions of the same models, so you might have the pin that both the sear disconnect and magazine disconnect (if your model had / has one) but no disconnect lever. The printing on the side stating that the gun can fire with no magazine inserted leads me to believe that you have the non-disconnect model, and not one that shipped with a magazine disconnect and was modified to shoot without a magazine inserted.

Yeah thanks that definitely seems to be the case. I am just surprised to see such an error in the manual. I imagine that is why they printed such a warning on the gun. It seems to me it would be better and less expensive to correct the manual. JS.
Thanks for the reply.

If the pin in your Shield is yellowish in color, it is the sear disconnect lever, which is present in all Shields. The magazine disconnect lever should not be present in your Shield. If you have one nevertheless, it is a manufacturing error, not an error in the manual. In that case, you should contact S&W customer service and get them to resolve this issue.

I also have the yellowish sear disconnect lever, this is in addition to that. I will call them and see what is going on.

I think I may be mixing up the extractor with the magazine safety pin. I want to thank all who responded and apologize to Smith and Wesson for my naivety and saying they made a mistake.

It's a new pistol and you're learning it like you should...I don't think any apologies are needed at all, liked they say, there is no dumb question!

Just to be clear, an M&P without the mag safety has one "lever" on the sear housing. You must move it yourself to lower the sear for take down so you don't need to pull the trigger.
The mag safety mounts on the same pin as the sear disconnect and is spring loaded. Once you removed the mag, the mag safety disengages the trigger bar so it can't be fired.
This sear housing has no mag safety. Note there's only the "yellow" lever you need to flip on disassembly (yes, you can pull the trigger if you prefer).

This one has the mag safety. The mag safety lever is circled in red.

Here's a view from the top. You can see the mag safety lever protrudes into the mag well. The "yellow" sear disconnect is still retracted. The other "post" is the ejector. It doesn't move.

Thanks. I was looking at the ejector pin and thinking it was a mag safety. Thanks for all the help.

If you are referring to the sturdy, unmoving pin that protrudes just above the top of the magazine and is attached to the left side of the frame (as viewed from the aft end of the gun), that is actually called the ejector. The extractor is the narrow metal strip built into the right side of the slide, and it moves slightly. S&W could do a better job of labeling gun parts in their owner's manuals.
I agree with scott.amy00, above. Keep asking and you'll keep learning!

OK, I see you have the ejector-extractor thing figured out. Great!

LOL, I do now. I did a search and one other person seemingly made the same mistake and it was their only post.
I was up late and looking at the manual and didn't have the gun at hand but knew there was another pin in there so I assumed and didn't check it thorough enough before I posted.
Before checking I believe it was the ejector pin I was mistaking the mag safety for.
I will make myself familiar with all parts and names before putting all you nice people through this again.
