Default First Time Shooting New M&P 2.0 C 9mm

Finally getting some range time since COVID hit last spring. Took my "new - I bought last spring" M&P 2.0 compact with 4" barrel to range today for it's first outing. My normal EDC is Walther CCP. The M&P was a dream to shoot today. Put only 45 rounds thru it with high cost of ammo, and also was shooting the CCP. Trigger is smooth and I like the sights better than the CCP. A bit bigger size but didn't seem to handle much different that the CCP. Looking forward to more shooting.
I did file down the grip texture a bit to feel better to my hand.

My next gun is the M&P 2.0, 9mm with a 5” barrel. Does anyone know if this model come with a thumb safety for colors other than FDE. I cannot find any black models with a thumb safety, only FDE.

my 4" has thumb safety. I have seen ones with no thumb safety and ones with thumb safety on various sites. Ones with thumb safety are fewer I think. Check GrabaGun, I got mine there in spring.

Your gun is exactly the same as my EDC. It's a great gun. I've put close to 5k rounds through it this year and it's been super reliable.

Some people think the grip stippling is too aggressive but I think it's just right. I also like the trigger and the fact it's very soft shooting, at least compared to my Shield 9 or Compact .45.

I hear you on the ammo prices. I was really burning it up early in the year before prices went nuts but I've had to cut back a bit lately. Fortunately as a reloader I have several thousand rounds stocked up, but still think about supply since primers are now nonexistent.

I carry the S&W M&P9 M2.0 5". It was only available in FDE with the thumb safety at the time. I removed the thumb safety and installed Dawson Precision Charger Fiber Optic sights.

On their web site, S&W offers the 5" in black as the Performance Center and the Spec Series, both without the thumb safety.

S&W will sell you the three parts you need to install the thumb safety.

Excellent taste in firearms.

I bought an S&W M&P9 M2.0 Compact 4" for my father for his 86th birthday. Here in Texas, when my sons turn 21 and get their LTC, I buy them one, also.

My S&W M&P9 M2.0 5" is my EDC and USPSA pistol. I replaced the stock sights with Dawson Precision Charger Fiber Optic sights. I, too, like the trigger.

I just checked the S&W website and the only 5" with a thumb safety they show is the FDE.

Thanks. Yeah, I went to their website and checked as well. It seems odd to me that a thumb safe is only available with the FDE.

I purchased a 4" MP 2.0 compact from the LGS yesterday. Kind of been a Glock guy for years but friends are always telling me how great the MP 2.0s are compared to Glocks. Look forward to running some rounds through it soon.

Not at all odd if you considered the black 5" ones are "Pro" series, made for IDPA/SSP and USPSA/Production, and no competitor wants an extraneous thumb safety. I have been shooting the 5" Pro in IDPA/SSP since they first came out.
The add-on M&P thumb safety only blocks the trigger and is not part of the original design. I don't know about the 2.0, but my M&P Pro frame is not machined to accept the add-on thumb safety.

Please don't be offended, but why do you want your M&P with a safety?

I've been an M&P fan in .40S&W caliber for many years (full size and compact) - fantastic pistols! Extremely reliable and shoot so comfortably.

A short while back I picked up an M&P9 Compact 2.0 with 4" barrel, as well. I'm planning my first trip to the range with it next week! I love the size and the feel. Great capacity of 15+1=16, or 17+1=18 rounds. And, the grip texture is fine by me - fantastic grip hold.

While I prefer .40S&W as a defense caliber, it's nice to have some 9mm capability, as well.

This argument goes around periodically on every gun forum. It seems we gun owners are divided into two camps - those who would never carry a gun without a thumb safety (that's me), and those who would never carry a gun with one (I assume that's you).

You will tell me that the bad guy will shoot me while I'm fumbling with my safety and I'll tell you that you'll someday shoot yourself because you don't have one.

Neither side is likely to change their opinion so the argument is pointless.

Although my 4" MP Compact does not have a safety, I would not be opposed to owning an MP with a safety. Seems like if your gun has a safety but you don't want to use it, just never engage it. Problem solved.

Thumbs down

Some here are offended by my Q?. I'm not trying to argue with anyone. I'm just curious, that's all.

We must each decide for ourselves which risks we are willing to manage and which benefits matter most to us.

The decisions and considerations that go into my risk analysis are personally unique and varied so as to probably not apply to anyone else. Discussing the why seems unproductive.

I tend to prefer discussions about how to do something better. Works for me.
