Trying to pick up a few 17 round mags for my M&P 9 but I’m only seeing clones from ProMag and ETS. Does anyone have any experience with these? Not sure if they’re reliable but originals are hard to find.

Promag are junk and to be avoided at all costs.

Never personally used ETC, but the spring does funky things when fully loaded. IIRC, Mac on The Military Arms Channel on YT either mentioned them, or reviewed them.

I have had numerous ETS mags, and some of their mag loaders. To stay in business, their products must inspire confidence and work for some other people. Not for me. All polymer fabrication is a cheap solution that will not hold up.

I've already bought 4 extra mags there....

I ended up replacing my PM that came on my Keltech2000, with S&W OEMs. Much better! And besides, the PMs only hold 16, NOT 17. Plus the springs seem to sag/weaken when left loaded over time.

I tried a promag for my m&p 2.0 9. After some work with a file on the feed lips, I'm satisfied for range use. I will not buy another.

I have used both, depending on stock availability, etc with good service and pricing on SW mags.

Promags are garbage. I bought 2. The follower got stuck as I was shooting at the range. I didn't bother to see what was wrong. I chucked both of them.

My own experience with Promags is not good. Had some for my FS M&P 9 plus some for my Ruger Mini 14. The M&P ones had too many issues to deal with so they got smashed and trashed. The Rugers needed filing and tweaking to make them work. Some just didn’t fit so they got the hammer too.

Others have had better experiences but I won’t go there again.

I have two 17 round ETS Group magazines and will not be buying any more. They are sturdy enough, but the engineering of the design is flawed. The follower is too short so that when it moves down into the body of the magazine it twists and often causes the cartridges to fail to align properly. When using my UpLULA, I find that I must stop after 6 rounds and check the alignment of the cartridges. I use these for personal practice at an indoor range and USPSA competition. Only when I can take my time loading the magazines, not for training or EDC.

Promag for one,is excellent for teaching you how to clear jams. Holdout and pay for original factory. M&P magazines are not hard to find. I wish 3rd and fourth generation magazines were as easy to find. If you have an Academy Sporting Goods or Cabelas you should be able to find M&P magazines regularly.

Greg Cote is great to deal with, and actually picks up his phone if you call.

He's close enough for me to pick up mags in person, but I hate driving in Jax.

Local Scheel's has (or had?) the factory 17 rounders.... 3 days ago anyway. I was shocked to see them. $39 each. Not sure what the going rate is, but that didn't seem too bad. All black mags, no FDE

Just wanted to followup on this and thank Jurek for the tip. Ordered two M&P mags from Greg Saturday. Got confirmation within hours and they arrived today. Authentic mags, still sealed, fit my M9 like a glove. Will run them at range this weekend. Definitely recommend Greg and will buy again

I have two 8-round and one ten-round ProMag magazines for my 1.0 Shield9. After over two years of range visits not one of them has failed yet.

I am told they are either cherries or they are lemons, I guess I got cherries.

I don't use them for defensive rounds, my OEM mags hold those. But the ProMags have performed excellently for me.

I recently purchased a S&W M&P 40 Shield. The magazines are the worst I have ever seen from a major manufacturer. There is no way I can fully load them. The spring is just too stiff. And it's not just me. Nobody at the range when I was there was able to fully load them either. So far S&W doesn't seem to care.

Any brand new Shield magazine will do this. My 9mm certainly did. Load them full and let them sit a couple of weeks. Use a mag loader if you have to. They will then loosen up a bit, still stiff, but loose enough to load.


N.B. to OP: Don't buy Pro mags.

Ahhh the memories!

When I tried to load even the very FIRST round in my new .40 Shield magazine, I thought the factory must have messed up and included 9mm magazines with my pistol!

They eventually do ease up A LITTLE, but I just guess they need to have stiff springs to keep lifting the rounds up in front of that really fast moving slide over the life of the pistol.

I also have a strong enough thumb now to shove it through a telephone pole without it bending!

Many have commented about Shield mags, I did as well early on.... and found the Uplula magloader is one answer that has helped often and it works well.

I wouldn't say SW doesn't care, more that the stiff springs in the single stack design (esp when new) can make those mags difficult to load. Just my .02

Stiff mag springs are a necessity in a gun with a small, light slide slide that reciprocates quickly. It's the only way to ensure the next round is presented in time to be loaded. Rules of Physics, I'm afraid.
