Shield Reassembly Question
While cleaning the recoil spring assembly the large spring came off the recoil guide rod. The ends of that spring are not identical. One has the tip close to the prior coil and the other end has the tip spread out a bit. Does it matter which end goes on the guide rod first?

My factory original has the close spacing in front as it sits in the gun.
There is no need to disassemble the RSA for cleaning.

The coil that's closer to the end of the spring is the one that needs to be at the outer end of the guide rod, the coil that's wider from the end of the coil is the end that goes towards the smaller spring...hope that makes sense

I had the big spring come off of my recoil spring assembly on my 1.0 Shield 9. I could not get it back together. Even if I'd been able to, I wouldn't trust it. If your recoil spring assembly looks like mine did (see photo), call S&W customer service asap, and they'll send you a new one for free. Good luck!

I'd get Smith's customer service to send you a new spring assembly. My Shield locked up tight at the gun club one day. The range armorer eventually got it apart, and it was caused by the spring sliding past the seat.
