I am having a lot of miss fires ,CC1, Agulia , etc thr gun is fairly new i did buy it used the more we shoot it the worse it gets, cleaning does not help, it has been to the local gun smith to no avail. Cheaper quality ammo seems to work better any suggestions ?

Many rimfires are sensitive to ammo differences and it's common for one to prefer one brand over another. Try a variety of different ammo and stick to one your gun prefers.

Not unusual, a 2nd or 3rd buyer may find the original owner may have changed some springs in order to "lighten the trigger pull". This often results in light hits/misfires. Try and verify if it has original springs, and if not order a new set.

Your's is not right. It's NOT SENSITIVE to different .22 ammo.......It's BROKE.......All my .22's go bang with ANY .22 I stuff in them. Although some are more accurate than others.

Being "sensitive" and having to use only one brand of ammo is like saying you can only run EXXON gas in your car instead of others such as Shell or Mobil........Send it back for repair.

Is it the full sized 22 or the compact? I had a full sized a couple years ago. It would only feed reliably on CCI Target. Every other brand I tried it would jam. A co-worker offered to buy it off me and I sold it to him. I think he did replace some springs, and bought all the CCI he could find.
You got good advice already, call S&W, tell them what's going on. If they work on it, ask for a list of all brands of ammo they use.

A while back my “local” full gun shop, (47 miles away,) was going out of business and had a M&P .22 compact w/suppressor for a sell out price. I guess I thought about too long and when I went back it was sold.

It seemed like a nice pistol combo and I think maybe I should have bought it when I saw it. Don’t know though for sure. I don’t mind finding the right combination to make things work.

Without seeing what the cartridges look like after being struck, my first guess would be a defective firing pin.

I have a full size M&P .22. Started solid but earlier this year, started to have significant FTE malfunctions. I was one range session away from sending it to the mother ship.


But I keep a shooting log, every gun, every round. Checked back on days I fired CCI, no problems, days I fired Aguila big problems. Went back in and fired three worry free magazines of CCI. Have not looked back.

Maybe it is just the brick/lot of Agulia I have, but in a 43c it's tough to extract. In an older Ruger 22/45 it has FTE issues. Maybe the brass is too soft or the power charge too hight.

I'm trying to find something I have that will shoot it, but not a priority, so have not checked other options (not that many .22lr in the safe). YMMV

Thanks for the replies, it is the full size M&P not the compact. The gunsmith at are local shop has tried to modify the springs, I won't know till this coming week end if it helped at all. It does seem more accurate with CCI though.
Plus some of the bullets if I run through a second time do fire the last time at the range I had 7 misfires out of 25 , the rim seems to be hit ok although this is my first hand gun, I do not know what to expect.

Possibility: An earlier owner may have dry fired the gun a lot, not knowing that this could put an indentation on the chamber rim where the firing pin struck it, or peen the firing pin wider than spec. If the rim of the cartridge is not well supported underneath, it may cause occasional “light strikes” with any ammo.

I have a Buckmark with over 5k rounds, works great with mini mags but not always with Federal, etc but is more accurate than me and is a great gun. I blame the ammo for any issues.
Had a SW compact 22 that in over 1k rounds never once had an ammo issue and used it to get rid of the Fed ammo the Buckmark didnt “like”.
Also now have a Victory with 2k rounds that seems to run whatever I give it, noting that now I only buy/use mini mags.

So could a gun be finicky, could it be how 22LR is made, perhaps tolerances varying from gun models that causes others to have rimfire issues? I sure ain’t no expert, just a guy who likes to shoot and has fired thousands of rounds. And i know for me what seems to work or not, which has shown to be certain brands being an issue not a gun. But if a gun had trouble across the ammo spectrum then yes it would need to be looked at.

I agree with this. I have one of the early M&P22 full size pistols (made by Walther, with German markings) and it has always been finicky with some ammo. Mine doesn't like CCI Blazers or CCI Standard Velocity (failures to feed with both), but will run Federal bulk and Rem Golden Bullets reliably.

My experience with rimfire pistols is that they like what they like, and once you find something they like you should stick with it. I know that's harder when ammo is scarce, but it works.
