Shield...Modern day 3913?
I have read several posts recently regarding the 3913. I owned a 3913 several years ago and foolishly traded it for something I thought I liked better at the time.
Is the Shield the modern day 3913? I will say that I am a fan of the Shield and currently own three. What say you?

I say no. Totally different handguns. The common things about them are they're both great compact size pistols and in 9mm.

I say what I said to myself the first time I picked up a 3913...
“This must be where the Shield designers got their inspiration.”

I still own my 3913; as well as, a few other 3rd gen Smiths. The 3913 is an accurate and reliable firearm. Carried it quite a bit back in the day before transitioning to mostly striker fire CCWs. The popularity of the 3913 no doubt played a roll in the development in the Shield. The single stack mag added to the concealability and didn't have that short/fat feeling one had with 6906, which had the double stack mag.

IMO the Shield family is the natural descendant of the 3913 in the sense that S&W always had a single-stack semi-auto as a "companion" to the double-stack in their lineup from the models 39 and 59 onward. Seems to me that it would be just natural for them to want to capture both parts of the market. That didn't happen when polymer guns were introduced. IMO they should have introduced the Shield years sooner than they did rather than have to play catch-up. Also IMO, the success of the Shield reinforces that idea.

While Shield has too many differences from the 3913 to equate it to a modern version of the pistol, I do consider it to be a worthy successor.
Folks who look down upon polymer-framed pistols are bound to disagree, but the M&P Series is in my opinion the pinnacle of modern semiautomatic pistol design, at least within its respective price-point, and shares the legacy with two other fine pistols, the Glock 17 and Walther P99.
The Shield in particular is one of the finest subcompact single stack polymer-framed, striker-fire pistols currently available, much like the 3913 was during its time, only with far greater recognition. (S&W 3rd Gens never quite got their due, IMO.)

As Forte Smitten Wesson pointed out, there are many differences between the 3913 and the Shield. I think he did an excellent job in his analysis of the two.

Ford vs Chevrolet, but if you like it who cares?

Pardon me, but the whole Ford vs Chevy analogy doesn't work here because both the 3rd Gen 3913 and M&P Shield are both made by the same exact company, Smith & Wesson.
A more accurate analogy would be the Chevy S-10 vs Chevy Colorado.

Weeeellll...... hold on just a minute.
"Successor" doesn't mean it has any relation to the 3900 series, except for that single-stack point and they come from the same manufacturer.
I'm of the opinion that the S&W line lost a lot of sales by not having a single-stack 9/.40/.45 for so long. The Shield series came way after competitors already had a foothold in the single-stack segment of the market.... or maybe more like a beachhead.
And notice one thing: none of that has anything to do with whether or not the Shield is a "Descendant" of the 3913 (which of course it doesn't - the Shield has nothing in common with the 3900 series except for that single-stack configuration....so we're back to where we were.)
So again: the M&P polymer line and its poly predecessors certainly aren't "related" as in design, etc., to the all-metal Gen 1, 2, and 3, but they are "successors" in the sense that they came after the all-metal guns.

They are both single stack 9mm sub-compact handguns roughly the same size. They were/are built for the same purpose, easy concealability. Mechanically they have next to nothing in common other than the barrel lockup.

Let's all just take a deep breath her. Of course the Shield is a totally different animal from the 3913. After all, we're talking about 20 years of manufacturing evolvement since the 3rd gen S&Ws were taken out of production.
Case in point, look at the S&W website. The only non-polymer frame, centerfire cartridge, pistols offered look to be 1911 style.
Does the Shield fill the same niche as the 3913, absolutely. I'll still hold by my statement below, the popularity (I.e. market demand) of the 3913 played an obvious role in development of the Shield series.

3913 = M&P Shield?
The concept is the same, make a sub-compact thin 9mm pistol.
The execution of the idea is very different.
Personally I'd compare the M&P Shield to the CS9.

Modern day? That's a stretch IMO. The market clearly wants a single stack subcompact so lot's of choices are available besides the Shield.
Some are:
Sig P365
Sig 290
SA XDS
Glock 43
Walther PPS
Ruger LC9S
Striker or hammer fired is your choice.
