Default EZ 9 PC Premature Slide Lock

I have a Performance Center EZ 9 that has a problem with the slide locking back in the middle of a magazine. No, Iím not riding the slide lock/release. Iím an experienced shooter with a number of firearms and donít have this problem with any of them. Iíve had two other experienced shooters try out the gun and they both had the same problem. It seems to happen in the middle to near empty magazine. Iíve tried 5 different magazines and it happens with all 5. Iíve seen that someone else on this forum has the same problem. I was wondering if this could possibly be a design issue with the magazines. In an attempt to make everything ďEZĒ, Iím wondering if the magazine springs are too light. I saw this written on another website concerning the same type of issue ...

ďA weak magazine spring could cause this problem as well. When the gun fires, the ammunition wants to remain stationary in the stack causing downward pressure on the magazine spring as the muzzle rises. If the spring isnít strong enough to hold the ammunition against the feed lips at the top of the magazine during recoil, the ammunition is free to bounce around momentarily, inadvertently coming in contact with the slide stop causing it to engage the arresting notch and locking the slide to the rear. This type of stoppage usually takes place in the middle or latter part of shooting a full magazineówhen there is enough weight from the ammunition and space left from the previously expended ammunition to facilitate movement and compression of the magazine spring. This allows the top rounds to float in the magazine until the spring overcomes the inertia and forces the ammo back into position.Ē

Any feedback is appreciated.

I think I might be the guy you're talking about with the slide locking back problem. Mine did it on the last round or second to last round in mag. I did notice that when it did it. It was barely catching on the locl notch not a full up lock. When I got my front sight pushed we noticed that the lock had a slight burr on the edge. I little bit of work with a jewelers file and since no more premature lock ups. Put 8 mags thru it yesterday and zero problems. That said, I do think you are right about too light on the spring but I think it is the one that holds down the lock lever.. BTW when I shot mine I only put five in the mag at a time.

Welcome to the S&W Forums!
The slide lock engaging the slide before the last round is fired can be a mechanical issue, but it can also be due to the shooter's thumb hitting the bottom of the stop during firing. Proper hand placement is important and I speak from personal experience with a good number of different pistols.
