Hey everyone,
New to the sight and just ordered a M&P 9mm. It should arrive tomorrow and I'm like a kid going to the circus.
Got a SUPER deal through Bud's Police Supply($432 delivered to my local FFL. Subtract $50 or 2 free mags with the S&W rebate and we're talking $382. Check them out.)
Anyway, the pistol comes with 3x 17 round mags, lock, case, backstraps, etc....
The only thing I wonder about is getting new "old" stock. I need to report any problems before taking possession of the firearm. So I wonder if anyone knows what serials numbers correlate to latest generation( bugs worked out) pistols.
Thanks

It's definitely a good start. Thanks. Does anyone know how to translate the serial numbers so that I know what I'm looking at, or should I just go by the test fire date?

I believe that other than the mag catch and a few striker problems on very early guns there weren't many problems. I sure wouldn't get too caught up in worrying about it. S&W has good warranty service and if a person actually knew how few have problems compared to the number built, you would probably sleep well at night.

Hello Throttlebender and welcome to the forum.
You'll be very happy with your M&P 9mm.
However, the rebate they are offering now is just for 2 magazines only. No $$$$$.
Enjoy you gun.
Bob

How is the "test fired this date" being determined on your M&P's folks? Were yours all shipped with a test cartridge?

Yes, included with my paperwork was an envelope with the fired round, name of the tech, and date fired.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. And thanks for the heads up about the 2 free mags vs the $50. Suites me, cause 5 is better than 3 right? Although, I've been reading that a LOT of people have been getting mags that were not what they ordered(wrong capacity and/or wrong caliber even) Yikes! I hope that doesn't happen to me..
Anyway, my pistol got here this morning and I immediately put 100 rounds through it. No hiccups but one. The slide release is SOOOO tight that I literally have to put a thumb on each release button and use all my strength to get them to go. I'm 6'1" and 200lbs, so I don't think I'm being a weeny. Having said that, I've repeated this about 20 times in a row and it's lightened up a tiny bit, but I still could never come close to doing it with one thumb. Any thoughts?
By the way, my serial# is MRM5xxx and the test case that came with it says it was fired 12-02-08.

Throttlebender, my M&P pistols all are hard to release the slide with an empty magazine. What I do is to hit the mag release button before I hit the slide release and it works. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you.

Thanks for the advice Bob, but I wonder why you would do that. I'm thinking of the slide release as being a faster way to chamber a round after loading a fresh full magazine. Wouldn't it defeat the purpose if I had to release the mag first to close the slide?

If i'm playing with the gun to dry fire it I do it that way. I think you will find that the slide release will work very well only when there is ammo in the magazine. Try that only on the range.

throttle: Put another 400+ rounds through you M&P. Your 'controls' will smooth out. If you take the tension off from the slide release - pull back on slide - manipulate release button, do you feel anything gritty or binding?

I purchased a M&P 9c in March 09 with a test fire date of 2/08 S/N MCP4###. No problems with it other then it is picky with the bullet over all length of my reloads. Have fired 400 rounds threw it so far, hand loads and Federal 124g FMJ. It is surprising accurate compared to other pistols I own.

Just about every acredited defensive handgun training teaches to use your off hand, belt, leg, etc. to release the slide. Relying on the strength of your thumb (which may also be wet, muddy, bloody, injured or missing) is not the best idea.
Using it a release also rubs metal against metal, which isn't encouraged if not necessary (although most modern handguns can take it).
