New gun owner with a simple question
Hello Forum,
I'm new to handguns and the S&W Forum. I picked up a used M&P 9 M2.0 and just want to verify if this is the date of manufacture? I've put about 50 rounds through it and it works great.
Thanks in advance. J

Hello,
Welcome, this forum is a great place for information.
To answer your question, yes that is the date of manufacture on the box. Happy shooting.

Welcome aboard. I would encourage you to find some training if you can, just to help with basics of safety.....Priority-ONE...and marksmanship.

It is the date the gun was boxed and ready to ship, so it was likely produced within a few days of it.

M&P with a 5 inch tube, nice. A recent thread said those were hard to come by.

Welcome! Congratulations on your purchase. It does you no good if you do not know how to safely use it. Get some training if you do not have it and practice.

Welcome aboard from Pennsylvania!
I second the suggestions for training. For the sake of safety and enjoyment it will be time well spent.

Well, now you're hooked! As far as I know there are no 12-step programs to help you! Save your money for a nice wheel gun! .38 special should suffice for starters!
Welcome from Pittsburgh!

Thanks for all the replies. SYK I live not too far from Maxonshooters in DesPlaines, IL and so far I've taken both of their intro to Handgun Safety classes (which count towards 8 hrs of CCL training here in IL). This week I'll take the final 8 hrs and the qualification shoot. Not sure I'll actually ever concealed carry but my thinking is getting the CCL is like a pilot (which I am) getting the Instrument Rating. It realigns the thinking processes to make one better in terms of skill and safety. Anyone think I'll get any pushback if I want to use the Full Size M&P 9 for the qualification shoot? According to the S&W web site it's listed as a CC gun but I wonder how many actually carry the Full Size concealed? Thanks, J

Me. M&P9 4.25".
Be careful with full size firearm (over 10 rd magazine) - check Cook County Gun Laws before you decide to have such firearm on you or at your car.

Do yourself a favor and in addition to whatever legitimate classes you can afford to attend and get to, purchase a copy of The Modern Technique of the Pistol by Greg Morrison, Principles of Personal Defense by Jeff Cooper and go to either the Panteo or Gunsite sites and get yourself a set of Jeff Cooper's Gunsite videos. Those will give you a good grounding in the basics of marksmanship, safe gunhandling and the word from the man himself who put pen to paper and first publicized the importance of mindset in daily life. Practice often. Practice well.

You won't get any pushback at all. Instructors around here encourage first-time shooters to use a full-sized pistol for their CCL quals since they are (in general) easier to control.
You don't have to use the same pistol for CCL quals as you actually CC.

I thought that way briefly after I got my license, but I quickly changed my mind when I found a gun and a holster that made it comfortable for me to carry. Once I started to carry, there was no going back. If I didn't have my gun with me when I left the house, I felt unprotected. So I began to carry every day, and I have done so for the past 6 1/2 years. And I live nowhere near Chicago.
To gain confidence with my everyday carry pistol, I went to a range every week and shot 100 to 150 rounds per session until I became thoroughly familiar with it. By doing this, I was also able to become more accurate, and establish that I'd chosen a reliable weapon I could count on. I still shoot it regularly. It just passed 16,000 rounds and it has become like an extension of my hands.
As you can see, getting your license to carry is only the first step in your journey to increased self protection, but it is a journey well worth taking.
Good luck, and welcome to the Forum!

Well it's a moot point now. My gun jammed when I was practicing the day before the qualifying shoot. The little plastic filler plug for the thumb safety fell into the mechanism and made it impossible to move the slide. It's back at S&W for repair. I used a rental M&P 9 a little smaller than mine but qualified for the CCL just fine. J

Welcome from northeast ohio. As a fellow new ccw holder(chl in ohio), I also highly recommend training as often as you can afford to. Even just going to your local range can be beneficial, as the range officers often double as instructors and can give you pointers and critiques based on what they see. You have definitely joined a good community here. Btw don't be discouraged by the malfunction. Once you get it back, you'll get to see just how dependable the m&p series handguns can be.

I'm not sure how this happened, but I've never heard of it before.
Just for the future, unless you really don't have the confidence, which there's nothing wrong with, somebody could have helped you fix this yourself.
Also, those little plugs are readily available. Or at least were, There's a guy on Ebay who sells lots of factory M&P parts if you needed a new one.

Welcome !
Good move for your initial training , and planning ahead for your CCW . In normal times I would encourage you to get plenty of practice to hone your existing skills , consider further practical oriented training . But with current shortages and $$ ammo prices it's tough right now .
Can and Do some people conceal full sized guns ? Absolutely ! But it will require a GOOD belt , a reasonably decent holster , and a commitment to Dress Around the Gun . It's a personal thing , with lots of variables , but there's a high probability that an IWB would work well for that .
