New Shield Plus - Mixed Feelings
Hey everyone. First time poster and new Shield owner. I'm impressed with the ergonomics and the accuracy of this compact 9, but I had a few failures to feed on the range with the 13 round mag. The slide would fail to strip a round off the magazine and it would hold the slide open. I noticed the nose of the round would also be tilted forward in the mag. Any idea what could be causing this? I know the springs when new are a bear to break in. Aside than the reliability, I'm glad I went with this S&W for concealed carry.

Welcome, you do not indicate your level of experience. Shooters new to semi-automatic pistols may move their wrists in reaction or anticipation of recoil that stovepipes some rounds. Second most likely is ammo that the gun does not like. If factory ammo, is it brand name 115 weight 9mm? If your loads, then it could be anything. Assuming that you do not have a lot of experience, has an experienced person fired it since you noticed the issue? I am a novice compared to some here, but f I had a nickel for every time someone said that a gun was jammed or malfunctioning after which I fired x number of perfectly cycled magazines, I could lend money to Bill Gates. Before you look at the gun, especially a new gun, you might want to check the shooter and the ammo. Welcome again and best of luck!

Hi, Rick. Thanks for taking the time to write to me. I guess I can honestly say I'm moderately familiar with firearms, though I am by no means an expert. Ammo was Federal 124 gr. Syntech and HST 124 gr. +P. The failures to feed happened with both types of ammo, but the HST cycled more reliably. I'm wondering if the magazine springs just need broken in. I'm pretty sure my grip was solid, but I concede that maybe I need more practice with shooting the Shield Plus.

Did you search the forum for answers?
Shield Plus malfunctions were discussed here often.
This is the one I remember:
Shield Plus - Failure to Feed - RESOLVED
Please also let us know when exactly this malfunctions happens:
1. one magazine or multiple?
2. top round? How many rounds loaded?
3. how many malfunctions per mag?
- Did you clean and lube the handgun before?
- How many total rounds are on this firearm?

While it doesn't happen often, It could indeed be the spring.
Many times, the people assembling the mags are not shooters, so once in a while the mag spring does get installed backwards. Carefully disassemble the mag and check that the top coil and follower are tilted upward.
Sometimes, simply disassembling and cleaning the mag does the trick.

Hello, jurek. Thank you for pointing me to that thread. I read it entirely and left with the impression that I just simply need to keep shooting the Shield Plus on the range until it breaks in. To answer your questions in order: 1) Just the one magazine, the 13 rounder. Next range session, I'll bring the 10 rounder as well. 2) Top round happened only once the very first time I fired it with the 13 rounder, which was loaded to capacity. 3) I wanna say there were a total of three malfunctions for the 13 round mag. 4) Yes, I did clean and lube the pistol beforehand. 5) As of now, there are only 100 rounds fired through it.
Robz, thank you for the suggestion. If I keep encountering the failures to feed, I'll strip down the magazines and check the orientation of the springs. I'll give them a good cleaning, as well.
I appreciate you guys taking the time to walk me through this. Thank you all.

NoSteponSnek,
You can try to keep mag fully loaded all the time (24/7), shoot and be patient.
I'm not sure if this will help, but I do polish the feed ramp on every new handgun and never experienced feeding problems related to the firearm. Whenever it happens it's ammo issue.

Not sure if its an ammo issue, but I plan on going to the range again once I get more practice rounds and HST. I'll keep you guys posted.

I doubt if it's limp wristing, of course could be, but I've purposely tried limp wristing and she fires all the time.

So I took the Shield Plus to the range again with both 10 and 13 round mags. I left both of them loaded to help break in the springs. Ammo fired was Federal Syntech 124 gr. and HST 124 gr. +P. Both the 10 and 13 rounder were loaded to capacity after chambering a round. Both magazines worked flawlessly through 150 rounds. I'm guessing the 13 rounder just needed broken in, because while it still requires a good slap to seat in the magazine well, it fed ammo with no issues this time.
As before, the Shield was pleasant to shoot and accurate. My wife handled it well even with +P ammo. Maybe now we can trust the 13 rounder more, but I think I'll stick with the 10 rounder for carry.

I read an article about the Plus and the reviewer had to only load the 13 with 12 and it ran fine. I loaded all my 13 round mags and it was extremely hard to get the last two rounds on all of them. I’m leaving them all loaded for a while.

I shoot the 10 rd mag as well as the 13. I carry the gun with the 10 rd with one chambered (11) and I carry another 10 as backup. My 2 13 rounders are for the range and home defense.
