New to me M&P 22 Compact
i saw an ad on Armslist for a Model 36 at a LGS I'd never been to before. Something odd about the finish, but what do I see? A flat latch. Hmmm. Price? $475. Alright, gotta go see. I get there and it's a 36 no dash. problem is, someone has applied a spray on finish, poorly. They put the finish on with the grips on it. So under the grips is nice blue but everywhere else is a flat black that's flaking off. No thanks. But there is a M&P 22 Compact, used with 4 mags, box and docs, for $400. Not the best price, but I was looking at these and this one doesn't look like it was fired. Ok, I'll take that one. Then, on the way home, traffic stops me right by another LGS. Since I'm sitting anyway, I pull in. And promptly buy a Ruger LCP for $175. Not great deals but 2 guns for only $100 more than I was planning to spend on the one.
Question: is Smith the only one making mags for the M&P 22 compact? Also, what ammo works well in yours?

If you search on my name here within the past couple months, you'll find a lot of info about ammo. Maybe a little about 14-round magazine conversations, too.
I'd do it for you, but I'm on a tablet and I'm sure you're up to it.
Enjoy the gun: mine is a favorite.

I picked up a slightly used 22 Compact the other day as well.
I do see that Pro Mag has a 10 round mag they make for the Compact but I was able to find a few extra S&W factory mags with a simple google search. I also bought the kit to make them hold more rounds. Taylor has a 14+1 and a 16+1 conversion and my little pistol runs fine with CCI Blazer and the CCI Mini Mag. I also ran some Federal Auto Match without any problems. I am confident it will function with any of my other 22LR I have on hand. I hope you have fun with your new purchases!

When I had my compact 22, it gave me 1k rounds with 0 issues. Cci is my go to ammo for my other 22’s but the compact also ate Federal and Am Eagle rounds. It was a steady plinker.

Well it came with 4 mags, so I have plenty. I thought I might pick up a few more. Saw the 35-40 dollar price tag, and thought I'd look for an alternative. AR and Magpul Glock mags have me spoiled. I'll just get some factory mags. Never had too much luck with ProMags. Just my experience in my guns. Given centerfire ammo prices, this little guy is probably gonna be doing a good portion of my shooting.

My favourite ammo is CCI. Aguila works great as well.
I do like "high velocity", seems to shoot better for me.
Here you have other threads about this handgun:

My 22 compact hasn't found a round it won't eat. The first 500 rounds or so I sent through it was literally a ziplock bag of mixed ammo. No failures of any sort.

I feed it CCI Mini Mags or Remington Golden Bullet. I have had no problems with either.
The M&P is about the best "have fun" plinkers you can get.
The only drawback is very minor. It likes to be cleaned every 200 rounds.
Of course, it doesn't stop working. But it runs best when reasonably clean. Is that too much for a gun to ask.

I've had good results with Aguila (2 types) ..
Aguila HV 38gr copper washed hollow point and HV 40gr copper washed round-nose both run like the wind in my Browning Buckmark. Both also run well in my AR with the CMMG conversion kit. I'd expect they will work just fine in my Marlin 60.
About the only thing I can say against Aguila is that it seems to run a bit dirtier than other comparable HV .22lr fodder.
My "strategic reserve" of .22lr is CCI - the HV poly coated stuff in the 400 round plastic jars. I've got a healthy supply of the stuff. Before Floyd/Pandemic, LGS had the stuff for about $34 per canister. Yeah - I stocked up.
