Permanently afffix the thread cap on a Compact .22

I understand all Compact .22 barrels are threaded with an end cap, which makes them non-compliant in New York State. Would it be possible to, or has anyone ever welded the cap to the barrel? It wouldn't take much - just a couple of touches and then smooth it up. Shouldn't put much heat in the barrel so as not to distort it.
The welded area would be inside the slide so it wouldn't show.

Even if it didn't distort the barrel I would worry about damaging the heat treatment of the barrel. They do get hot when you shoot a lot so I might very well be worrying about nothing.

Filing the threads off the barrel might be another option.

Mine came from a FFL in NY and is on my NY permit.

It would be possible to weld a cap on without damaging anything. It's something that is done to permanently attach muzzle devices to short AR barrels to get them over the 16" minimum.

Whether or not this would satisfy whatever legal requirements need to be met is something I would ask a FFL holder in NY. Given they would want to stay in business, I'm sure they would know what they can and cannot sell to different people.

Thanks - I have an FFL - just want to know about the feasibility of lightly welding the cap on the barrel to permanently affix it without damaging the barrel. The law doesn't deal very well with this possibility.

I'd be nervous about welding on a skinny little barrel like that.
I am sure one of the micro-welding specialists could do it, but Bubba's Garage? Nope.

How about low temperature, low % silver solder?
Maybe green shaft retainer Loctite.

Not a problem on a pistol so long as the pistol does not have a mag well outside the pistol grip or is over 50oz.

It can be done, we have such a place we use locally for our tooling repair.

I would worry more about legal compliance.

Wickedwelding.com One of their gallery pics shows them welding slide rails. They regularly weld carbide to tool steel for us.

I have heard of Wicked Welding in gunsmithing. Too bad the plastic M&P barrel is affixed to the receiver, running up shipping costs.
