Recently purchased a m&p .40

There is a take down tool in the bottom of the gun. Your supposed to turn it 1/4 turn and then its supposed to come out. Has anyone got theirs out? I've tried turning 1/4, 1/2 and pulling and its not comming out for nothing.

That sucker is really tough at first. Take your time and work it slowly and it will come out. I was worried about breaking it at first but it comes out easier after the first few times. 1/4 turn does it. I don't take mine out unless I'm changing the backstraps and use a pen or something for the sear when field stripping. Keep at it. It'll come out...

I'll keep trying but I fear as you that I will end up breaking the thing. My damn hands got sore after twisting and turning for a 1/2 hour and couldn't get it to budge. I'm not sure who designs this stuff but they need to pull a fresh one off the line and go tell the engineer who designed it to remove it. If he can get it out in 30 min he should be fired.

Luckily my pinky fits down the hole to release the sear.

I'd like to replace the grip with a laser grip soon though

1/4 turn, then wiggle it a bit (plus/minus a few degrees back and forth) while pulling it straight out.
I'm 60 and arthritic and can do it

Mine wasn't a problem, I guess I got one of the few that isn't to tight. Just a quarter turn and a little wiggle and it came right out.

I found the most difficult part is that it is SHARP and it helps to put on some leather gloves at first. I twisted mine back and forth several times then pulled it out and put it back and did that several times.

I then decided that I would never, ever do that again except to change the grip, but never to disassemble.

A Bic or other pen works fine for disassembly.

Have any of you tried using a table edge for leverage?

Table edge works. Once you get the damn thing out to change the backstrap there is no need to use it to move the takedown lever in the mag well, a pen point or screwdriver works well. Also have used my finger.

So it's not just me, too: I spent some frustrating minutes with my new M&P 40 trying to get this little sucker out tonight...I'll git it another try tomorrow, with some more patience thanks to you guys.

Be careful, as it's easy to break off the little retainer tab.
I put a little silicone lube on the whole takedown tool and it works far better now. Don't use petroleum grease, as it softens the plastic.

This is always a problem with a new pistol. One suggestion, remove the magazine and look in the well with a flashlight. You can see the nub of the tool in its locked position. Try putting a drop of oil or spray a little silicone on the nub and then try removing the tool. The only real reason to remove the tool is to change the backstrap, as the takedown lever can be moved with your finger, pocket knife, etc.

Do not turn it more than 1/4 turn or you will break the nub off the shaft. I broke off the nub on my M&P soon after I got the gun. I made a call to S&W customer service, told them what I had done, and they sent me a new one free.

When I called my contact at S&W, they recommended using the edge of a desk or table as mentioned above. I have used wide pliers with a cloth on the tool so as not to mar it. If your are not changing the grip insert, use a pen or other device to decock the pistol. They do get easier with use. Bob!

I used pliers for the first time or two and then it loosened up enough to get it out with fingers, or as a last resort, use the edge of one of the other backstraps to get it started. There is no reason to worry about damaging the tool. It will be fine.
