I have a new M&P Pro, 9mm and am interested in having an "External Safety" installed (like the one on my 1911).
I seem to recall they can be Ordered that way from the Factory, but mine did not come with that feature.
Anybody know if S&W will perform that work and if so, what the price may be?
Thanks
Ken

The M&P 9 Pro is set up for IDPA/SSP and USPSA Production competition.
It is not available with an external safety, and I can't think of a more useless modification for this specialty competition model.

Other M&P models are available with external safeties, mostly to satisfy department requirements, not because the design requires them.

texasmike,
Your post is way out of line.
A little easier on the trigger there. I don't see Ok's answer as all that snarky. Only one phrase is even opinion. He even gives a link to the catalog comparison page.
Lighten up.

It is my understanding that as of just recently, the Full, Mid, and Compact sizes are available with the External Safety, optionally, which, I am assuming was due to Customer or market demand. Maybe S&W felt it was in their best interest from a Liability perspective, but that is a whole other topic that I am not trying to raise.
Unfortunately, it appears I bought mine just a little too soon.

If one were to have a Trigger tuning on this gun, which takes up a lot of the slack in the trigger before it engages and fires, it seems to this newbie that what little there was in the way of safety is greatly diminished.

Mine is the 9-Pro version and also does not have the safety interlock to prevent firing with the Magazine removed.

All models of the M&P have a firing pin block. The pistol won't fire unless the trigger is pulled to disengage the safety.

JJA327.
Yes, I am aware of that ... what concerns me is; if one were to have a "trigger tune up" which may make the slack you have to take up before engaging the trigger, much less, in effect, you are significantly diminishing the one and only safety you have.
Trying to make the trigger system work more like a 1911 is, in effect, disarming or diminishing your only safety.
That's why I'd like to have a traditional 1911 type safety as well.

Rod:
I recognized it as a pharmaceutical but have never seen it used to describe an individual. My Webster's certainly doesn't have it listed. Kind of like if someone referred to me as an ibuprofen.

You're right, Ed... it was a rather "creative" word usage.

ctkenc-

You make a good point about safety. In particular, I believe a person who is new to guns needs to develop confidence with their weapons. In part, that confience comes from being comfortable with the hardware, and the safety mechanisms which are available. I say - if you want a safety on your gun, no one should denigrate your decision. All that matters here is - are you a good and safe shooter.

I am right next door in Weatogue. Let me know if you ever want to get together for a range session at Metacon. My email is in my profile. And welcome to the forum.
