I am looking to hear people's experience carrying the M&P 40 concealed. What holster are you using and would you recommend it?

I don't have a fullsized M&P yet, but I often carry my 9 mm compact. Since it is identical to the 40 compact, and only different in grip and slide length compared to the 40 fullsize, I think the 40 will conceal just fine. Barrel length is a non-issue carrying IWB, as I do 99% of the time and there is still plenty of room under my shirt to hide the extra 1 1/4" of grip length.

I occasionally carry a 915, which has a grip length close to identical to the M&P (though thicker) and I have no trouble concealing it under a sport coat, sweatshirt, or loose, untucked polo or shirt.

I have both a Comp-Tac CTAC and a K&D Cochise Defender and would recommend both. The CTAC can be had in a week, but the K&D is much more comfortable at the expense of waiting 4 to 5 months.

Here's my Cochise Defender

Galco Summer Special and Don Hume Open Top H721. It's not as easy to carry as my Glock 27, but it's do-able. I always wear slightly oversized T-shirts.

No problems with my M&P 9, which is the same size. I carry IWB and just wear a slightly larger t-shirt. I have carried many times and my wife didn't even realize it until we got home and I was putting it away. It's very doable.

I put it in the right front pocket of my cargo pants. I have one pair that have deep front pockets and it hides real well in them. The others are not as deep, so I leave the shirt out to cover the pocket. The grip handle will show if someone is standing directly behind me. When the weather cools this fall, I will wear a holster and cover it with a vest or light jacket. Pocket works good and I can have my hand on the gun and no one can tell. We have had several armed robberies at some of the local grocery stores. They like to hit when the groceries are beeing put in the trunk. I exit the store with my hands in my pockets. The wife handles the cart. Works good

My M&P .40 uses two different holsters....my IWB is a Milt Sparks VM-2 and my OWB holster is a Kramer open top that was originally for a Glock 22. The price was really right (free). Both have served me VERY well. My advice is buy the best Quality holster with the features that you like. Again a good quality holster from most any of the major manufacturers will serve nicely. Get a good quality belt as well and you will be a happy camper.

ccw007... I have the full size MP40 & my holster of choice is the CrossBreed SuperTuck Deluxe. It is a very comfortable holster that I have tried. With it's wide peice of leather & clips being so far apart it form tight up against your body.CrossBreed Holsters

Anybody carry an M&P fullsize in a shoulder holster under a coat? I often wear a blazer to work so I figured it would be a convenient method of carry.

Yes i have two shoulder rigs i use, i'm not a large person but no problems keeping it covered.
One word of advice, don't carry it next to bare skin, after a day of carrying it this way while out hunting on a very hot day, i came home with a case of road rash from it. blue

I do not appreciate the finer points of shoulder holsters, apparently. To me, the horizontal ones violate certain safety rules.

I used to go to this gun store where the employees wore horizontal shoulder holsters. It is disconcerting to look right into the muzzle of the pistol while following the store employee to the ammo section, or whereever.

I feel the same way about these Miami Vice "wannabees" who carry on duty using the horizontal shoulder holster. It is surprising how many of these types you see without jacket (badge always on belt) in the various buffet lines and so forth. Now, if they want to go around the station house pointing their pistols at each other, that is one thing, but PLEASE do not spoil a perfectly good buffet!

In addition, making a presentation from either a vertical or horizontal shoulder holster requires the person presenting the pistol to cover, ever so briefly, those shooters on his left which is a great reason to disallow them on the range. I do not like to be on the line with a shooter with a shoulder holster. I am uneasy about having some guy swinging his pistol around, briefly pointing it at me (invariably the finger is already on the trigger).

Perhaps some of you up-to-date NRA instructors will know, but NRA used to disallow shoulder holsters on the range or at NRA matches for this very reason - not sure if they still do.

Well, if you cannot use it on the range, you cannot easily practice with it, and if you cannot practice with it, probably better not carry it.

The manner of carrying your side arm depends on what your carrying it for. When at the range i use a pistol case, period.

However i'm a predator hunter, and as such i use a shoulder rig because it works best. When calling you bring in everything that hunts. While my game is cats and yotes, i also bring in black bears that at this time of year have started their feeding frenzy. I also happen to be sitting down while doing this, not on a chair, but on the ground.

Try to draw while sitting cross leg on the ground with a rifle in your lap from a wb holster and see what happens. Now add to that, that most of my hunting is in heavy brush, and that bear is going to pop up almost nose to nose with you, now you start to get the picture of why i use a shoulder rig. blue

ps,your right horizontal rigs are for the movies.
