M&P 45 Ambi Safety--Possible Modification?

Has anyone modified an M&P ambidextrous safety by removing the right side thumb lever to allow for fitting a Crimson Trace Laser? The laser would be blocked by the right thumb lever and is only available for the M&P without the safety.

Such a modification would allow me to retain the safety lever on the left side.

I'm reluctant to do this with the original safety and would like to have a second safety before I remove the right side thumb lever. Anyone know a source for another.45 S&W M&P stock ambi safety?

I'd also appreciate any recommendations for alternate solutions and/or whether or not this is a good idea.

Thanks.

Being it's been several months since this question was posted, I'll bring it back up to the top. Has anyone removed the right side safety lever?

Default Here is the answer to your question

Don't cut the safety lever it can't be uncut if you know what I mean. At this site Cane and Derby Smith & Wesson M&P Profiled Safety Levers
you can get a replacement that is profiled and removed on any side you want..I am about to order this as I also purchased a ct laser grip then noticed the note about the safety.

Let me know if that helps.

I know this is several years later, but I just installed the safety levers on a used M&P 40C and as others have posted, its a piece of **** safety. Also just did an internet search on Cane and Derby. It appears they are either out of business or nearly so. Looks like if I'm going to make this safety usable, I'll be getting out the needle files and experimenting. I do not see any other options.

Your post is kind of confusing. The OP was about modifying the safety. Which safety did you "install" was it the OEM? Are you saying the factory safety is a ***?

I installed an OEM thumb safety from Speed Shooter Specialties. I was saying the safety is poorly designed because there is not near enough resistance in flicking the safety on or off. I was able to improve that by using a needle file on the detent piece. It's still not great, but improved. I also ground off the right side safety lever. Not for a laser sight, but because I did not want a right side safety lever.

Gotcha. I agree, the safety on my full-size 45 could use more resistance. My Shield 45 has a competely different manual safety, it's a slide style vs. the paddle, and it has a very nice click to it. I have often wondered if S&W used that big paddle because it reminds people of a 1911, but it needs more refinement.
