ammo for M&P10
Folks, I am new to the M&P10 and would appreciate some advice on 1) best ammo for accuracy, 2) ammo to avoid, 3) is shooting steel cased ammo a concern. Thanks!

1) Other than handloads Federal Gold Medal Match(FGMM), choose your flavor 168gr or 175gr, if you're shooting 600 yards and under 168 gr do just fine, 175gr for further out. Before the madness you could pick this stuff up on sale for $19/per box of 20.
2) I'm sure there exists some questionable surplus stuff.
3) No, its pretty dirty though. It wont wear out your extractor, chamber, etc. If you don't plan on doing mag dumps where the gun becomes to hot to hold you'll be fine.
My advice get into handloading when components hit the market again, you produce stuff that will blow FGMM out of the water for half the price.

Start looking for surplus ammo from germany, portugal, austria. Stay away from pakistian (POF). I shot a State rifle match and came in third using portegeuse ammo!! I seem to remember it was 147 grain.

BlueOvalBandit (just got your name btw, hahah) hit the nail on the head. So far the ammo my rifle has liked best is either the Federal 168's or 175gr's.
I tried some Milsurp 147gr in it, and it did OK... just over 1moa. I'm not a great precision shooter in long guns by any means tho. I shot some 180gr Winchester Super-X, and I don't know if it was me (somewhat fatigued), the rifle, or the ammo, but I was super inconsistent with it.
Just my 2cents. Gonna try some other ammos out maybe tomorrow or next week.

I just took mine out today and fired 3 different types of ammo.
40 rounds of 150 gr. Tulammo
40 rounds of ZQI
and about 20 rounds of Freedom munitions 168 gr. HPBT
The tula ran flawless. 20 round mag, 1st ten aimed last 10 dumped.
Hit very well from 50-100 yards using angle irons and scope.
ZQI also ran flawless and was just as accurate.
The best was the Freedom (no suprise there) second shot to zero Nikon M-308 scope hit a thin aerosol bottle at 100 yards and hit it off the ground with several follow ups.
This trip was just to zero the scope and test function with cheap steel cased ammo and I was extremely happy with the performance and accuracy. Next will be a trip to the "long" range to do some 500-1000 yard shots with the Freedom 168s and to see just how far the Tula will travel. Gotta love this rig!

I recently order some TUL. Haven't shot it yet but ordered it as the price was low and I read a number of favorable reviews.

So far I've just run XM80CL 149gr. Shoots 600 yard steel plates just fine.

My off brand AR-10, shoots the XM80CL and Hornady Match 155gr A-max Palma best. The box of M118 173gr match (1968) and the box of Federal GM Match 168 (2010) didn't shoot too well, which surprised me with a 1:10 twist barrel.

Back a few years before I bought my M&P10, I recall reading somewhere that the platform was designed, built and tested using 175gr I've tested pretty much everything over the years but have had the best results with Lake City MilSurp (Civilian Seconds) 7.62x51 XM118LR 175gr. It's tough to find quantities less than 200-500 rounds these days, but I swear by them out to 800 yards.
Only thing I wish we had were good 20"-24" aftermarket barrels since mine is about shot-out...

My 7.62 MVP Patrol isn't too thrilled by Federal GM Match either but loves the Remington Sierra Matchking with the same 168gr bullet. I don't know what Federal is doing different than Remington but neither of my rifles care for it much.

I want to run some myself just to see if my rifle will eat it with no issues but not as a regular thing since I eventually want to get into reloading.

I use everything including Tula ammo. Just lube it a bunch and the 147 grain stuff works. If the steel cases wear out the M&P 10 then I buy a new one and then get the parts to fix it.
That is a clearly fair way to have your wife allow you to purchase a new M&P 10.

I am also new to the LR308 platform a DPMS LR30 carbine, bought a couple of boxes of winchester 308 just so i could shot it and until to the dies came. I am still gathering data on what I feel is the best bullet and powder is best for me. I now have a 7.62X51 scout bolt rifle that shoots any and everything. Reload is the way to go if you shoot a lot and you have a shooting budget.

Ive been shooting Hornady steel match 155 gr bthp and its been 1 moa at 100 yards no problems eats em out of mine, and its around $45.00 per 50. I also wonder if the steel case is a problem as well? If not, I would highly recommend trying these rounds out.
