Default AMBI Charging handle for M&P10

Has anyone found and installed an ambi charging on their M&P 10. I am partial to the RAPTOR, but I can't find one for this format at this time.

Anyone installed any of the ambi charging handle latches? If so, what do you think of them.

littlecreek,

You and I are in the same boat. I asked this same question on AR15.com in the S&W subforum there - and no one has responded with any knowlegde about the Raptor. I guy did post that he is currently using a "Gen 2" BCM charging handle on his M&P10 - but he also knows of problems with earlier gens of the BCM unit.

If I can find a Raptor .308 charging handle - and if the outfit will accept returns if it doesn't fit - I will buy one and report here if it works or not. I hope is works - as I love the Raptor on my 5.56 guns.

cheers

I had to do a bit of dermal work to get the raptor working in mine.
I have the AR-15 model in my M&P-15. I really like the way they operate.
I picked mine up at: JoeBobOutfitters.com
They give a 5% military discount.

No joy on a drop in fit with the Raptor. Sure - the Raptor does drop right into the upper of the S&W - and cycles smoothly. However the problem begins when you try this with the bolt/bolt carrier installed. Binds up big time.

The hole in the front of the Raptor is a smaller diameter than the stock S&W unit.

The "trough" in the Raptor is just as wide as the "trough" in the stock S&W unit.

There is a small "step" in the Raptor right near the front end where the larger trough transitions to the smaller diameter hole. This is where the problem lies.

There is no step in the trough in the S&W stock charging handle.

Since for me the Raptor is by far the best charging handle - I decided to mod it so it would work. I took a chain saw file and made the front of the Raptor equal the trough, i.e. I removed the step. Then I dremeled it to polish it, put aluminum black on it and PRESTO I have a working Raptor in my S&W M&P10!

Love the Raptor - makes charging the S&W M&P10 so much easier - with either hand.

Hope this helps,

cheers

Did you need to modify it in any way?

Did you have to relieve the "trough" full length or just remove the raised portion at the front?

Default Raptor ambi .308

I am going to be performing the modification to my .308 raptor on my m&p10. I will take photos and post by the end of the week. I just want to clarify, do I only grind down the inner trough hump and there is nothing needed to grind on the outer side?

I can't wait for the mod, I enjoy the Raptor on my other AR and being ambidextrous at times when shooting miss it on the M&P10

Try the Raptor handle just as it comes out of the package as it may drop in and work that way.
If not you will probably need to do at least steps 1 & 2 of the following.
1) File down the raised area on the front top so it is flush with the top of the handle.
2) Then from the front, through the hole, use a round file to remove the raised area of the channel so it is flush with the rear portion of the channel.
3)If the handle still does not fit properly you need to deepen the full length of the channel. Mine only needed .010" removed, but others have had to remove as much as .030", which would have made mine awfully thin. this is probably best done with a milling machine and a ball end mill. With lots of patience it can be done with a dremel.
Be sure to try the handle between each of the three modifications.

Default Raptor ambi .308 mod

Ok so you must remove the hub on the outer top front.

Then you must remove the inner hub in the front of trough.

You must deepen the inner trough almost through the whole trough.

Go slow start with the outer hub, then work your inner trough.

Remove some then test it, Remove some then test it.

Then walla it works.

Be sure to clean everything in your rifle, Make sure you leave no metal shavings anywhere.

The Raptor is a superior ambi charging handle worth the mod.

any guestions? thanks Eddie

Just want clarify, you need to make the trough DEEPER, NOT widen it.

Default Raptor mod update

So on further testing I had to deepen the whole inner trough. Made it much smoother to feel and operation.

yes deeper , but to get rid of the full lip on the front inner trough it will require some widening. Also file the upper inner front down a bit to ( just make it all even and smooth). here are some more pictures. As you can see even with these mods you keep the aesthetics of the part and rifle when installed.

After you have it to the point you think is good, Clean assemble, Cycle it a bunch ( Unloaded ). Dissemble and look in the trough. If it needs more filing you will see rub spots in the trough. Work those areas some more and repeat.

A good reference for depth is to make sure the bottom front of the Raptor charging handle is flush with the top of the BCG. The picture shows the correct fitting. Hope this helps. It's what I did with a little time and patience, And like someone posted earlier make it deep enough and wide enough and don't do to much you don't want it to thin. File clean test , file clean test.
After doing this mod which I had some trepidation about I would recommend both the Rainier arms Raptor and the m&p10. Looks and feels sweet together .

I just got my 7.62 Raptor in the mail Saturday. I tried to fit it today and it binds. The binding occurs when trying to close the bolt, but not until the bolt is 3/4 of the way closed. On mine it really looks like if I took off the nib on top it would clear enough to function. I haven't decided if I want to cut it and hope it works or just send it back to Rainier. I purchased my M&P-10 in July 2013, not sure what the production date is.

Hey guys,
I bit the bullet and bought the raptor. When I first put it in dry, it binded, lubed it up and worked it in, I charged the handle till it moved almost freely took it out cleaned and relubbed. Found the nipple on the top front rubbing, filed the nipple off, cleaned and relubbed, it works great, no need to deepen the valley. Awesome handle, million times better then stock, if you have a scope its a must.
In all I just chopped the nipple off the top, lubed and cleaned it a few times and that's it. So don't go strait away grinding stuff, I really didn't even have to cut the nipple off but, it did help it move easier..
Hope this helps,
James

I ended up sending mine back. I measured the difference between my existing charging handle and the raptor on top of the bolt, the difference was 1.496" to 1.517", making the raptor assembly .021" taller. The tolerances looked close enough that I wasn't willing to risk cutting it up.

I just put these on both my M&P Sport & M&P 10 & they both dropped right in and work excellent. I was at my gunsmith and he had an older 7.62 Raptor & it looks like they may have changed the design to better fit the M&P 10's

I machined the Raptor to work with my M&P10....yes it will work. All you have to do is file off that protruding part on the front top (the little 1mm bulge height) and file down the small edge guides from the top about 1mm. Then it will perfectly fit.

The Rainier arms raptor for 308 works perfectly and fits great in my Smith and Wesson M&P-10. I bought it thinking that I would have to make modifications and expected to but it dropped right in and works without any modification. I guess I got lucky.
Just buy it thinking that you may need to modify it, even if you have to it is worth it. I love mine.

I have the camo version of the M&P 10, and I didn't like the factory charging handle cause it was a little bit in my way of my scope, so I bought the Raptor Mod4 charging handle, I spent around an hour or more doing this: dremel/test it, dremel/test it, dremel/test it, dremel/test it, until it finally ran smooth.

That looks like a BCM not a Raptor.

I had to make the Raptor fit too, but with a full machine shop, it was pretty easy.

Default AXTS 7.62 Raptors and S&W MP10

So after searching the net and getting many conflicting messages on whether the AXTS 7.62 Raptor will work in the S&W MP10 without modification, I decided to buy 2 of them directly from AXTS to put in my 2 MP10s (serial numbers both in the KN21xxx range - don't know manufacturing date or if that plays into whether the Raptor fits or not). After installation, the charging handle was binding about 3/4 of the way in.

I reached out to AXTS to find out if there was another 7.63 model available (as others mentioned being able to just drop in theirs) and here is the response I got from AXTS:

"No we do not make a version without the nub. We may make a modified version down the road to fit this rifle but do not at this time. I am sorry for the inconvenience we will update the product description."

Now I am trying to decide if I modify a $100 charging handle or return and look for other options. So 2 questions for the group: #1. is the integrity of the Raptor compromised by removing material (some of the pictures of modified handles looked like the walls were getting pretty thin)? #2. If I return, what other ambi charging handles are out there that fit the MP10?

Other than the Raptor, I haven't seen any others. When I looked, the handle wasn't available, so I got a BCM with the large lever instead. The ambidextrous feature would be nice but not necessary since I'm right handed and use my left to charge the weapon anyway. I just needed better clearance from my scope's eye piece.

I believe the Raptor is plenty strong after modification.
After all, all it does is pull the bolt back.

I put one of them big square end ambi levers on mine when I got it, just for scope clearance. It works well enough, and even though I am southpaw, I do not normally need ambi, just nice to have I guess, after shooting AR for 30 something years I am pretty used to standard, but today I stumbled across a BCM mod 4 extended half off for 30 bucks!

Well, I hope it works, but if not I have little to loose it seems. I am not into this stuff for looks, but it does look cool!
