The evolution of my M&P-10
The lower rifle, with the exception of the Aimpoint Micro, is how my Big Smith came from the factory
It only took a couple of shots to realize the M4 style stock wasn't gonna cut it. The Magpul furniture was robbed off an AR carbine
The Big Smith shot very well with the Aimpoint, but I bought it for a scope. Besides, I needed the Aimpoint back on my HD carbine. First, I mounted a 10x Leupold
Then a 2.5-10x Nightforce came my way
This weekend, I removed that ugly chunk of metal S&W calls a flash hider and installed a BABC. No photos yet and haven't had a chance to shoot it. But the rifle looks and feels better. The S&W hider weighs a full quarter pound and has 4.5 inch/lbs of moment when hung off an 18 barrel. I'm glad it's finally gone!
Future plans include a lower profile for the gas block and either a Lancer or Troy carbon fiber free float handguard

Ash, I like how you've set up your rifle- with the exception of that muzzle brake! Good looking, no nonesense configuration. Can't wait until I've got enough money to install a FF tube on mine

Heh! I've shot 308 with brakes. No thanks! I'd rather deal with the recoil than the concussion. The BABC isn't bad on concussion though. A Belgian Combo Device is a little worse than the BABC but still tolerable.
Are you in Utah? If so, we should get together for a shoot
ETA- I just checked. I see you're in Georgia

Sold my M&P-10 and bought this PWS .308 and couldn't be happier. The price was more, but it also came with several nice pieces that I didn't have to upgrade like I did on my M&P. This thing will eat any ammo I feed it unlike my M&P-10. The accuracy is better too (I was shooting this better with a stock trigger vs my M&P-10 with a Geissele SSA-E), but it has a 20" barrel rather than 18" like the M&P. I'm really a fan of these PWS piston rifles. It is heavier, but that doesn't concern me as I plan to shoot this rifle prone most of the time. I have other rifles for hunting and to carry over a distance. Shooting suppressed is just a matter of one click of adjustment on the factory gas block.

I would have liked a 20" barrel on the M&P-10 better, but I'd rather keep my piston inside the carrier where it has a larger surface area. is easier to keep lubed and clean and has to deal with less heat

Out of curiosity, why the .5" rise on the M-308 mount, preference or necessary? I have just purchased this same scope but have not yet installed it.

It's a start
I'm thinking of a Nikon M-308 with a Nikoplex reticule and mounting the iron sights with a 45 degree offset. I haven't decided on whether to go with a free floating hand guard yet or not. To reach it's maximum potential, it would need one and a bipod. It's a work in progress.
Word has it that the polymer sights will have melting issues due to heat from the gas block, so something else to consider. I may need to upgrade from the MBUS sights to the Magpul Pro as a result.
Beyond that, I think she's good. I like the way she shoots and compared to my 1895 guide gun, she's a kitten.
UPDATE: Since the link to the old picture was broken. Here is a new one. APEX hanguard and I did go with the 45 degree off sight mounts. I also got a swiveling Harris bipod to complete it.

...and a good start it is, sgtsandman. Yes, polymer sights will melt when the gas block heats up. Keep the rate of fire real slow so the GB stays cool and you'll be ok until you get something else

A couple pics...
PRI Gen III 15" carbon fiber forearm
Geissele SSA trigger
Syrac Ordnance adjustable gas block
BCM Gunfighter pistol grip
YHM Phantom FS
Magpul MBUS
Bushnell Elite 6-24X50 G2DMR FFP
Burris FastFire III
Magpul PRS (seen installed in first pic)
I've had some cycling issues with the first couple of hundred rounds, but I think I've cracked the code with a Spike's Tactical heavy buffer, slowing down the cyclic rate a tad. Haven't done any serious accuracy evaluation yet, but will give updates.

Magpul grip and stock
Leupold VX3, 1.5-5 x 20
Burris mount
VLTOR low profile clamp on block
Apex handguard
I did not want a 13" handguard, and the mid length free float guards leave the block exposed. Apex was great, and put the DPMS barrel nut clamp with an AR 15 10.3" sight block handguard for me. (Internal diameter of all their tubes are the same)
This is a deer rifle, and loves the 150 gr!

Another view of the handguard/gas block. The VLTOR clamp on block has plenty of room for anyone looking to use Apex handguards.

This is my first S&W, and my first post on this forum. I haven't done much to it so far, so I'm not sure it can be considered "in all it's glory," but I'm excited about it anyway. The only thing I added was the Nikon glass, bipod and sling. Everything else is the way it came in the box as the LE MOE version.

Hey everyone... I bought the M&P10 several months back. I wanted a .308 "AR-style" platform and I did some research. It came down to the S&W or the Ruger. Went with the S&W and couldn't be happier. Here's mine... With some improvements:
Here's what I've put on it:
*Troy Battle Rail and Troy low-profile has block
*Troy Forend Grip FDE
*Troy Flip-up sights
*MagPul Stock and Grip FDE
*Noveske Single-point sling mount
*Bravo Company Charging Handle
*Aimpoint PRO on the stock mount (hate) and an Aimpoint 3x Magnifier on a LaRue Low-Profile Pivot Mount (love).
*Giessele 2-stage trigger
I'm not sure if I want to keep these optics on here or get an ACOG or maybe a Leupold and throw the Aimpoint stuff on my Daniel Defense V1. The stock Aimpoint mount is definitely the next thing to go if I keep the optics on here. It's got a big and bulky knob that sticks out pretty far compared to the LaRue which is streamlined and very sturdy. I may also get a bipod in the future but I'm not sure at the moment.
And a note to all new owners and prospective buyers... The break-in period was a bit rough for the first 100 rounds or so. I was having a few double-feed issues and jamming, misfires etc... Just keep running it though. It seems to really like a good amount of oil and shoots like a dream once warmed up. Haven't had any issues with it since then and I've put about 500 rounds through it. Thanks for looking!

Some Aervoe Paint and a piece of camo net. Went with a base color of OD green, then oversprayed with a sand, then light green , Brown then Flat Dark Earth.

Did you have to remove your ambi for the 24c? I had to cut one side of mine out so the firing pin would hit. You shoot yours yet?

Heavyweights????
Can anyone explain why it seems everyone is taking one of the lightest 308 AR's available and turning them into 12.5 - 14 lb heavyweights. I purchased my M&P10 as a hunting tool, & I value the fact it has significantly lighter weight than most 308 ARs. Yeah, I took off the factory furniture, and I substituted lightweight Magpul forend, MOE grip, & MOE buttstock. For optics, I'm utilizing a lightweight set of Nikon P223 rings, and an ultra-light Leupold 2-7x scope. Next, I took off the heavyweight S&W flash hider & replaced it with a super lightweight Manticore muzzle break. With a loaded 5 round mod'ed magazine from MagPul, my hunting rifle comes in at just a hair under 9 lbs. It now has more manageable recoil and faster follow-up shots when compared to my other big game rifles. And, after working up good handloads for it; a tennis ball is in real trouble at anything less than 300 yrds. Hitting an antelope killzone at 400yrds is a "piece of cake". Keeping a tennis ball bouncing for five consecutive rounds is a real challenge, & a hoot at the end of a day on the range. Obviously, This thing will be a genuine kick in the pants on my next pronghorn hunt in the NW Colo. or Wyoming.
I just don't get the attraction of all the heavyweights being built-up today. If I wanted an ultra accurate bench or long range varmint gun, I'd opt for a target bolt action. If I wanted an ultra-light sheep hunting rig, I go for one of the new scout carbines. Since I wanted a big bore hunting semi-auto that handles like my AR-15, I opted for the M&P10. By keeping the M&P10's natural weight down, it does just that. Guess an old Survivor like me is just tuned-in to a different kind of music. Some young guys like HeavyMetal & the occasional Hip Hop. Old 'Nam Farts like me; we like a little Sonny & Cher with a bit of Springsteen or Simon & Garfunkel mixed in! Guess I just answered my own question; "When it comes to either hunting, or dealing with Troubled Waters, I'll be able to say: I'm carryin' a sweet tune with me. And I'll be singin': I Got You, Babe!"

First, not everybody is turning their M&P-10s into heavyweights. A quick perusal of this thread will show less than half have heavier buttstocks and large scopes. Second, a 20 round mag filled with 308s adds a pound and a half to the empty weigh of the rifle. Third, pictures showing the actual weight of your rifle on a scale or it didn't happen

LlindeX, well written and points made. When I first met 'Sally' she was light and joyful, now she is mean and heavy. I still love her to death and when we go for a jog, she take off her hat (scope) and shoes (Bi-pod) and she is a well-toned runner.

Any issues with the thinness of your barrel when you had it chopped? What thread did they put on it? Is that a 51T with 5/8-24 thread pitch? Thanks in advance!

Mistwolf,
First off, since you requested it, I'd love to be able to post a pic for you of my M&P10 on my scale. However, unfortunately I'm not at home in the U.S. at the moment, and the unreasonable folks here in this country wouldn't allow me to bring my baby with me.
However, As a somewhat inadequate substitute, I can give you a quick detailed rundown on how I designed her to be my lean / mean hunting machine:
Basic M&P10 rifle from factory = 7.71 lbs = 123.4oz.
substitute Mapul MOE forend for factory forend = - 1.2oz
substitute MagPul MOE buttstock for factory buttstock = -1.0oz
substitute Manticore Nightbrake for factory S&W flashider = -2.5oz.
Substitute modified MagPul 10/5rnd mag. for metal 10rnd S&W factory mag = -0.5oz.
Added Nikon PSeries ultralight rings = + 3.3oz
Added Leupold ultralight VX2 2-7x28 scope = +8.5oz
Added rear & front side sling swivels = + 2.5oz
Added nylon side sling = + 5.5oz
Added FIVE rounds 308 Win. 150gr SST cartridges = +5.5oz.
Total rifle hunting weight with loaded FIVE round mag. =
143.5oz = 8.97lbs.
To me, that's coming in just a hair under nine pounds. I admit some here won't find my Big 10 to have all the cool tactical appeal they desire, & that's fine. "Every man has a right to pick his favorite lady friend! Some like 'em skinny & some need to have some love handles."
However, Considering these facts: The way I have my 16" Colt 6721 set-up, she comes in at a hefty 8.2 lbs; and packs all the anemic two-legged punch of a 5.56NATO. My lightweight Big Ten, comes in 3/4 pound heavier, but I know I can easily carry her anywhere I want to go in the field, and I also know I'll get the job done on any medium/large big game out to 350 - 400 yrds. To me, that fits my design criteria of a hunting gun handling like my AR-15, but packing the accuracy & punch necessary for big game rather nicely.

Nice! A nine pound 308 AR shows good weight management.
According to the scale I used, my Big Smith weighed 8 lbs 2 ozs with Magpul handguard, CTR stock, empty, no mag, no ammo, no sights and no sling. With the Nightforce 2.5-10 and sling and no mag or ammo, it weighs 10lbs 5 ozs. The twenty round mag brings the total up to 11 lbs 14 ozs. The sling is a half pound and the loaded mag is a pound and a half.
Since it was last weighed, the S&W muzzle anchor has been replaced with a BABC from Battlecomp and the CTR replaced with a MOE fixed carbine stock. I never weighed the rifle with the original round handguard and M4 style stock

My M&P10.
Here she is! My favorite Rifle Evahh... I even hunt with it. Don't mind her friends, they snuck in at the last second.
