This rifle is designed to meet certain legal restrictions applicable for certain states. Unless you live or plan to live in one of these states, there is nothing impressive about this rifle.

A compliance rifle may have restrictive features like: a) no threads on muzzle to prevent use of sound suppression, flash hiders or recoil brakes, b) fixed full length stock that mitigates the ability to conceal the rifle and c) magazine lock that prevents magazine changes or reloading without some degree of time consuming disassembly.

This one is fixed stock but its a pin that you can drill out and comes with 10 rnd mag. Which is all I can get in communist Colorado any way. I want a custom brake by my rifle smith anyway. Just wanted a heavier barrel than the regular. Will do a lot of changes as is. Is barrel chrome lined is it a good shooter.

I have this rifle and placed the PW FSC break on it. Quick drill fixes the stock. I like the heavy barrel but it does thin a little before the gas block which I found odd. Shoots well.

If you are interested in a heavier custom barrel, you might try Obermeyer Rifled Barrels ... I think this guy has the patent on 5R rifling.

... not implying that he will be able to work you into his production schedule, however.

I have the heavy barrel and I personally like the look a lot better then the pencil barrel. I got got over a 1000 round thru mine now and it functions perfectly. I'd recommend not going crazy and changing everything at once, perform one modification at a time and take it to the range to ensure proper function. There's a lot of people who change a lot of stuff on these guns and go out and find there rifle no longer working properly and because they did so many mods at once it makes it much harder to pin point issues. Best of luck with your new toy. I'm sure you will enjoy it

Btw after a few range sessions the pin in the stock worked its way out on its own lol, the prs and raptor charging handle are great upgrades, the raptor may or may not need minor Modding but it is a well worth upgrading too

I have the 811310 & I love it. The barrel profile ahead of the gas block is exactly the same as the other models. The only difference in barrel profile is downstream of the gas block. The 310 appears very close to a standard "Hbar" barrel diameter downstream of the gas block vs the "Pencil" barrel diameter of the others. Personally, I preferred the look of the standard diameter barrel on the 811310. It took all of 3 minutes to un-pin the stock. I had my Smith thread the barrel ($65), then installed a "Nightbrake" from Manticore Arms. (It's shorter, only 2oz. Vs 4oz. for the S&W flash hider, and produces a little less noise/side blast than other compensators.) In my opinion, what I ended up with is much nicer than if I had bought one of the other pencil barreled models with the elongated flash suppressor; AND it maintains the same light weight as one of those. As for accuracy, with a 2-7X32 Redfield mounted, I'm easily getting sub 1" five-shot groups at 100yrds with Winchester white box ammo.

MistWolf,

You totally missed my point!!! Light Weight is EXACTLY why I bought the 811310. Out of the box its weight is exactly the same as the light weight Pencil barrel models; 7.71 lbs. Don't believe me? Check the specifications from S&W. The amount of metal removed from the barrel in front of the gas block to make them a "pencil " profile weighs right at 4 ounces. The long flash hider they put on the pencil wt. barrel weighs right at 4 ounces. Thus, the "heavy barreled" 811310 model without the flash hider weighs almost exactly the same as the "light weight Pencil barrel" models with the flash hider. My gunsmith removed right at an ounce of metal from the barrel when I had him thread it. The "Manticore Nightbrake" I installed to control muzzle rise weighs only 2 ounces, & is 1.5" shorter than the S&W flash hider. Thus, for only an increase of roughly 1 ounce over the pencil barrel models, I have what you just called a "heavy barrel" which better resists heat, is 1.5" shorter overall, and also has one of the most effective comp./brakes on the market. With my comp/brake installed, my 811310 "heavy" barrel weighs only 7.75 lbs. I've got a friend who has one of the "Pencil" profiles. It weighs 7.71 lbs. A five-shot 100 yard group with my "Heavy" will almost always beat one from his "Pencil". (his fifth shot often opens the group up about an extra inch or so. ) Thus, the model 811310 sounds like the best of both worlds to me (lightweight & sustained accuracy).

Jwteknix said he likes the looks of his heavy profile barrel better. I'm just saying I don't want to have to carry a heavier barrel around.

I don't know how the barrel of your rifle is profiled under the handguards, but from your description, it sounds like you made a good choice. As you say, that hideous S&W flash hider weighs 4 ozs. I know, because I weighed mine after I took it off and replaced it with a BABC. The barrel of my M&P-10 is pretty skinny forward of the GB but it's profiled heavier under the handguards where the extra material is needed to deal with the heat. It's profiled much like a sporter weight barrel of a standard bolt action rifle.

It's kind of hard to see in this photo because of the shadow, but this shows the profile of the barrel

I say it's the most sensible choice of barrel profiles S&W could have made for this rifle. Is yours similar?

My Big Smith with NF 2.5-10x32 NF scope, Magpul MOE hanguard, Moe grip, CTR stock, a loaded 20 rnd Pmag (1.5 lbs) and sling (.5 lbs) weighs a total of 12 lbs, 11 ozs checked on a scale. I may have shaved 2 ozs off that when I swapped the S&W flash hider for a BABC
