Default I'm Putting A MP 10 On Lay-Away

Monday morning provided none of my renters gave me a rubber check. I hope to put a MP 10 on lay-away. I have few questions that I probably could have found answers to by doing a search but thought I'd do it the easy way.

#1 is mag interchangeability. Are all AR-10 (308, 7.62) mags compatible with the S&W MP-10 or is S&W or any others oddballs??

#2 Sights, Although my wife believes I have an endless supply of money. I will be a bit tight on discretionary funds after picking up the MP-10. So I'm looking for suggestions on cheapie iron, preferably flip-up sights to get me by until I can afford something along the lines of an ACOG.

#3 Reloading. Is a small base sizing die needed to handload for the MP-10?? My 1970's Colt AR-15 SP-1 will only function with brass ran through a small base sizer. The SP-1 model does not have a forward assist so the small base sizing is necessary. I have both standard and small base sizing dies for 308. My old Savage 99 lever action needs the small base sized brass. Handloading I do for a friend's Remington 760 also prefers the small base. An Israeli K98 re-barreled and converted to 7.62 worked fine with a standard or even neck sized only die. Any tips or advice on handloading for the MP-10 will be appreciated.

I can try to help some:

1) P-Mags work perfectly - don't have any others.
2) MBUS irons are affordable although I honestly do not have irons on mine.
3) No and neither does my 1982 SP1. What is important for both semi-auto's is proper headspace (shoulder setback) and COAL (especially my M&P 10). Buy a Wilson headspace gauge and you can't go wrong. I notice I have to trim some cases after every firing (example - 10 from today's shoot, 7 next time etc.). My rifle is hard on case rims - not sure how other owners are affected. I use LC brass exclusively. I use IMR-4064 because my .30-06's like it with best groups at .750" at 100 yards on a good day (means me doing everything properly). YMMV and so does mine usually LOL. Hope this helps. Good luck!

THX!! Webfarmer, have you used Winchester 748 with your 308? Reason I'm asking about 748. Two of my shooting buds that wisely bought legal Class 3 MG's way back in the late 70's and early 80's when they were still affordable. They both swear by Win 748 and BLC-2 for their 223 and 308 MG's. Bear in mind it is not max velocity or accuracy their goal but reliability of their guns and they both praise the two powders as flowing nearly perfect from powder measurers. I suspect 748 and BLC-2 being the same powder as the data is nearly identical and both powders look exactly alike.

I've had excellent accuracy results with 748 and BLC-2 in 223. 748 in 308 does ok but I believe there is room for improvement. My 40+ year old Savage 99 not exactly the most accurate rifle but shoots well with in minute of deer via the irons. I've also tried Win 760 and IMR 4350 in 308 and didn't see any significant improvement on paper. With today's shortages I'll have to settle for what ever happens to be available.

Omark - I haven't tried W-748 for this rifle but do use it exclusively for my 5.56 rifles. It's a good powder and I've read quite useful for 7.62. I like reloading 748 much more than stick powders for sure. Based on performance in my 5.56 rifles, I can't see a reason not to use W-748 in your .308 AR. Just try the recommended load range as usual to find the one that's most accurate but cycles the action properly. Can't go wrong I believe. Good luck!

1) The mp10 uses the dpms LR/SR type of magazine. This is not interchangeable with all 308 ar10s. Magpul pmags are highly recommended. The factory 10rd metal mag is junk, throw it away immediately. 2) make sure to use a metal front sight on your gas block. Can't go wrong with a trijicon. I own two accupoints and they are by far the best scopes I've ever had. 3)sorry, i'm no help in the reloading department. I will say that mine has eaten everything I've fed it.

Don't throw away the factory magazine, use it as a vice mount for the rifle!! This great idea is not mine, it was Copemech's but I'm paying it forward! (I believe it was Copemech's and if I mistakenly gave the wrong name my apologies but I'm pretty sure!)

Seems I do recall one or two reports of their gun requireing the small bsae dies to run properly so probably a safer option.
