I'm taking my brand new M&P 10 to the range tomorrow and I thought I'd take it apart to learn the parts as well as clean and lube it. The problem is I can't get the firing pin back into the bolt carrier group. If I pull the bolt out the firing pin seems as if it will go in but when the bolt is in the carrier group I can't get it down all the way.

What is this idiot doing wrong? My finger is bleeding from trying to push it and scraping on the side of the bolt carrier. My gun now has AIDS!

I'm pretty sure I have the extractor om the correct side.... If' im a complete retard and dont know my left from right yet please let me know but this looks correct... even so, iI dont thin that the way the bolt is placed would matetr on if the firing pin would seat correctly.... its's symetrical

Looks like you're hanging up on the bolt pin, is it rotated to the correct position ?

Yeah, check the video at a little after 1:30 on the time scale where the demonstrator says "rotate the cam pin 90 degrees" and pulls the bolt forward in the carrier just before he inserts the firing pin.

hmmm my pin faces the wrong way... the hole drilled wrong/? I TURNED THE pin and then the firing pin seated... its 90 turned the wrong way it seems though

Yup, my cam pin hole is drilled incorrectly.

The hole on my cam pin is on the rounded edge

Stop panicking and turn the cam so the flat bits are running parallel to the sides of the BCG, mine run that way and I've never had an issue with it.

The firing pin retaining cotter pin should be the last thing replaced. I don't see it on the towel.

It fell and I found it. For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to drink vodka and clean my rifle. WRONG!

Thanks for the wisdom. All the pictures show AR 15 cam pins with the holes drilled on the sides where the top of the pin is flat. I'll just leave it as you say, I trust you.

Then you mustn't have seen pictures of the Brownells(078-000-175WB )/Zero(100-015-257WB)/Red X Arms(100-012-264WB)/Colt(160-000-390WB )/Bushmaster(100-015-381WB) square cam pins. BTW, those are the product numbers from Brownells and took all of about 30 seconds to do.

But then again what do I know, I haven't viewed "All the pictures" of every single BCG manufacturer out there so I must be the one talking out of my a** here.

The AR 10 style firearms are different than the AR 15 style. Its not just bigger.

The bolt cam on the M&P 10 does not need to be rotated. When you put it in, just look at the hole in the middle (the firing pin needs to go through that). If you rotate it, the hole will be in the incorrect position and the firing pin will not drop in.

I put about 120 rounds through it with cheap bulk ammo that some guy bought in 50 gallon drums and my bolt is now disgusting. The gun works though! yahoo!

Now to focus on purchasing optics! $$$$$$$$$

You can spend $$$$$$$$$ on a scope, but you don't have to. With the M&P 10, its never going to be a tack driver, so no reason to shell out a ton of cash on an expensive or highly magnified optic.

I recently purchased a Primary Arms 1 - 6 to put on a different AR and am very impressed with it. Its only $270 and does a very good job. I have a friend that has even put a red-dot on his 308 (course he is a bit younger and has better eye's than I do).

While I'm not the best shooter, I've gotten mine down to a 2" group by adding a $500, .308 specific scope. I may be able to get it down to sub 1" once I free float the barrel and put a better trigger on it.

Would a Marine Sniper use it over their highly modified model 700 that they use now? Probably not but it should be good for reaching out and touching someone in more human distances, say 600-800 yards.
