Thumbs up A fix is in for the S&W AR-10 barrels

So, you don’t have to ‘junk’ it just because the barrel failed. A fix is in for the S&W AR-10 barrels that they won’t fix and will not sell. Contact Black Hole Weaponry in Oregon. It seems the S&W priority barrel extension IS removable and can be reinstalled on a BHW barrel of your choice.
I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN SOONER OR LATER

It 'appears' a DPMS pattern bolt will fit in a DPMS barrel, when installed in a S&W MP-10 upper receiver. They have a customer's MP-10 that the S&W barrel shroud was removed from. That operation allows for the S&W bolt and carrier to be used on their barrels. The S&W gas tube is priority and is slightly longer, meaning the S&W tube has to be used in this instance.

As soon as BHW can get hold of a S&W MP-10 lower receiver, they will proof-fire their (DPMS-pattern) barrel/extension installed in a S&W upper receiver with a DPMS bolt/carrier to confirm it will function properly. This lash-up will use any standard DPMS gas tube.

This really interests me as I have had an eye on the BHW polygonal rifled barrels. The first option would be a 'fix' for those who have to have a barrel but do not want to spend any more than necessary to repair it. The second option, which appeals more to me, would allow for tightening-up the upper receiver/barrel shroud clearance along with getting back on track for standardized DPMS-length gas tubes. The MP-10 I have worked with has 1 1/2- 2 thousandths rattle room, and the BAT extensions BHW uses on their barrels should correct this issue also.

Again, I have no affiliation with BHW, just curiously 'nosing' around.
Hopes this helps, have a great day

That is good news that at least someone may be putting forth effort on this issue, as it seems S&W are not.

I am no expert, but I kinda know what needs to happen here. As far as re- using the stock barrel extension and bolt, you will need to turn a new blank because of thread indexing. Once all that end and chamber are set, that will dictate distance and indexing of gas port.

As far as a direct interchange of DPMS pattern barrel and bolt used in a Smith bolt carrier and fitted to Smith upper, ????
I have heard reports that go both ways but know no specifics.

Nevertheless, they may just be the right guys for the job as they are already set up for it, do custom work.

I hope we get some good reports back soon.

It was my understanding that BHW uses CNC machines. That should allow for precise renditions.

Excellent, EXCELLENT news!!!

Sounds promising for those of us who like the format but desire a heavier stainless (precision) barrel.

Maybe someone who knows machining can explain this to me. Why can't someone reverse engineer the S&W Recievier Extention? Then there would be no need to try an remove the exsiting RE and reuse it then any barrel maker could produce M&P barrels.

BAT machine in Rathdrum, ID is a big provider of (precision) extensions, and provides them for BHW. There is a question that maybe S&W's extension might be patented (?!). If not, it would take a fairly large number of 'clients' for BHW to spring for the cost of a custom run. I was left with the feeling that possibly that might happen if enough people voiced their interest to them (BHW). I'd buy one just for the hell of it

Yea, well I took a look on that little press release posted on AR15.com. Well all I can say is I'll believe it when I see it.

I see this like a headlight on a freight train coming down the tunnel.

"Yes we will fix it. The cost will be $900 for the repair because we will have to replace the entire upper due to liability reasons on parts that may have been overstressed."

Oh, and I did still see a clause in there that they will not work on anything that has been modified, so I would guess that pretty well takes care of all us that have installed a Low Pro gas block and free float, not to mention triggers and other stuff.

Potentially, they could balk on anything here, up to and including they must restore to factory configuration.

Time will tell!

It's nice to have options but I hope I never need it.

If they are going to void the warranty for installing a different gas block, free floating the barrel, installing another charging handle, or putting a different muzzle device on, I may have to rethink my future purchasing options. I'll wait and see how things play out before I make any kind of a final decision on that.

Yesterday, I spoke with Jay at BHW Black Hole Weaponry and find that they just received a second customer's barrel, which was split wide open. I believe it belongs to a previous poster here- wish he would chime in and keep us updated!
Bottom line is that S&W extensions have the index pin only installed into the extension and not through into the barrel. Meaning; The extension can be torqued off the S&W barrel, allowing for the replacement barrel to be fitted to it. Apparently, so far at least, the factory thread-job on the original components has been clean.
So relax, if your factory barrel blows out You just get a shot of adrenaline and CAN have it replaced with another barrel of your choice.
There is a possibility that BHW may be able to have BAT Machine supply them with S&W pattern extensions that they could market (depending on S&W patents- if any??). Be nice to be able to have a custom barrel to install with the ability to put the factory pipe back onto your MP-10 when it becomes time to sell it- EH?

I'm waiting for other calibers from S&W, but I think that is a dream.
Hope that BHW offers S&W pattern barrel extensions, or better yet barrels with extensions. I'm voting for .338 Federal.

Not sure about the comment about the pin not extending into the barrel, but I have been told by others that these pins in general are really soft ant they will simply shear on removal.

Hopefully they may get a barrel extension of their own to use, but if not, I may yet still let them do me one using my old one if I cannot soon find a round that will shoot straight. I have picked up a few more options to try first.

Seems BHW uses some odd rifling that I have not seen before. There are no grooves per-se. Yet they claim it as an accuracy barrel. Lots of custom options there too.

If they get an extension without me having to ruin my factory barrel I will buy one just to have a different option to switch out. How about a 20" rifle length gas in stainless! O'yea!

I've heard of polygonal rifling. It's supposed to be more durable and less prone to fouling.

Here is what Bearing Arms has to say on it: Bearing ArmsBarrels and Bullets: Conventional Versus Polygonal Rifling - Bearing Arms

It was explained to me that the S&W extension (unlike most others) has the pin only in the extension. It did not go through into the barrel. The extension was merely torqued off the barrel when it was disassembled.

This seems like a great start to have one in 6.5 Creedmoor or a 338 federal as stated above.

I love a 308 but options are nice

I'm unclear on the purpose of the pin. Does it fix the extension to the upper so it doesn't rotate?

Yes, the barrel extension (index) pin aligns it to the receiver.

Unhappy New M&P 10 Owner

I sure wish I would have found these posts BEFORE I bought one of S&W's attempts at the AR-10 platform. My bad, I should have done a little more research. I swore off S&W back in the 90s and it doesn't appear things have changed much. It's too bad that S&W doesn't feel the need to provide customer service that is on a par with most of the rest of the industry. Not selling parts for an AR platform is ridiculous. Especially when the rifle is made to proprietary specs. At the very least S&W should offer upper receivers and barrel extensions.

There's your problem. You bought an AR-10 platform. S&W doesn't make AR-10s. They make the M&P-10 and it's a rifle, not a platform

+1

On the bright side, it's nice to know people are out there working on a barrel for this in case I ever do anything like leaving something inside my barrel when I try to force a bullet down the same path.

Watching this thread intently.
A nice accurate 20" bull barrel would be lovely to have installed.

Wonder if BHW will ship to New Zealand?

I could have sworn this thread was: "A fix is in for S&W AR-10 barrels". I guess if the M&P isn't an AR-10 platform then this thread must be misplaced! The M&P is obviously a rifle by definition as is every other long gun with rifled bore. Furthermore the M&P certainly has all the markings of being in the AR family, hence my reference to the AR-10 platform.

On a more pertinent note -

I contacted Black Hole Weaponry as to the possibility of having a barrel replaced on a M&P 10. Here is the reply that I received from Jason Allen yesterday:

Ken-

The issue with the M&P is the proprietary barrel extension.
I have built barrels for these rifles, but, the customer has sent me his upper and I have dis-assebled his existing barrel and used the extension.
So, in short, yes I can do barrels for that weapon but Iíll need your old barrel to do it.
Let me know!
Thanks!

-Jay

Now if only S&W would offer reasonable customer service....

Yep. S&W makes M&P-10s. Armalite makes the AR-10

Yep

But the AR isn't a platform and it's especially not a weapon's platform. Aircraft, boats, vehicles, tanks and anything else that carries a weapon into battle or other situation are weapon's platforms. The shooter is a platform. The rifle is not a platform- unless you bolt a bunch of ******* to it. Then it becomes a ******* platform and only if carrying the ******* into battle is it's primary mission, not shooting

The AR10 (Armalite Rifle, Model 10) is specifically made by Armalite and it is their proprietary design. The M&P10 shares only the general shape and ammunition of choice. The M&P10 is based of the Stoner and DPMS design (SR25/LR308) with their own twist to it. When looking for parts that will fit it, AR10 parts will not fit but quite a few SR25/LR308 parts do. That is why people make a point of the distinction. Not because they have anything in particular against Armalite.

I hope we get some feedback from those that have obtained the BHW barrels! I know they have done at least three now for folks that have at one point posted here. I have little doubt about the quality being good.

This is great news! I must admit, though, being an occasional shooter I have had ZERO problems with my '10 and love shooting it!!! I don't reload (yet) but have followed other members comments and achieved successful results by listening and (for the most part) following advice. I also maintain my weapon per factory recommendations (after 8+ years as an 0311 I can and do know how to clean/lubricate parts and properly utilize and store/ect. My weapons). I have as yet to have an ftf or accuracy issue. If you want a tack-driver build an M-40 (clone) or equilivant clone and whoop it up! I friggen LOVE THIS RIFLE!!! I also recently purchased a M&P 15 PSX piston AR that has also operated without issue. My only regrettable S&W experience has been the sale of my old model-29 w/8" barrel. I kick myself constantly for selling that! One hell of a hand cannon! I wonder if Mr. Eastwood got to keep his "Dirty Harry" '29? I say keep up the good work S&W! I have trusted my and my family's defense to your products for a lifetime and that ain't gonna change! Great posts on this forum btw! All of this free experience is greatly appreciated!!! Default MP-10 BARRELS!

I too have heard of the great barrel debacle! And as a former recent military vet has told me this is what you get when you unpack a new weapon and go out and ram 50 rnds to whatever thru her in 50 secs. without a cool down a barrel cleaning and lubing every 5 to 10 rnds after slamming the biggest capacity mag found in it! we laughed! Proper brake- in applies to all weapons. I've had my 10 since it first came out. broke it in with sanity! Amd it's as smooth as glass after, I'll say ...... to many mags to count! I've gotta feeling there's some macho testosterone neglect going on here! And when they give you a recommended load or grain to use? Its just that!

Anyone done a BHW barrel replacement yet?

How would you also test the bolt for strength after a barrel split?

There is one not far from me for a decent price with a split barrel... Might have to get it as a spare

If it's cheap and a complete rifle, I'd get it for the spare parts. Heck, you can build another upper.

Default M&P 10 Barrel

For all who may be interested...
I sent my complete M&P10 upper to Black Hole Weaponry. I was looking for a 7mm-08 heavy barrel. Here is what we found:

The bolt and barrel extension are proprietary to S&W. BHW found that a DPMS BCG and extension will work in the S&W upper receiver.
I elected to retain the S&W BCG and extension. BHW removed the extension an put it on the new barrel.
I went with a 24" barrel which required a new gas tube since the factory gas tube is a proprietary length also.
BHW built an incredible barrel for me.
I put the gun back together tonight and have a few issues...
I bought a CMC drop in trigger that I was told would fit the 10. It does not fit due to the ambidextrous bolt release on the right side.
I had a Geisle trigger in an AR 15 and swapped them out. This trigger fits and works in the 10.
The only issue I have now is the bolt release will not hold the bolt open in this configuration. I have not tried to swap out to the factory trigger yet to see if this will fix the problem. I will update when I do.

I have not shot the gun yet but will report on that this weekend.

BHW was great to work with and I highly recommend them for your barrel needs.

Seriously great find! I was already gonna source a BHW barrel for my SPR build, but will obviously use these guys for my future M&P10 changes too. This info seriously makes future barrel swaps as trivial as they are for the AR15 platform. However, I'd still like to hear someone with this configuration successfully operating their M&P10 with the DPMS BCG and barrel extension.

Really excellent info. Thank you!

.
Do I understand this correctly, to change barrels all I need is a DPMS barrel and BCG?

What about building a new upper/barrel/ bcg and slapping it on the S&W lower?

From what I understand about the m&p is that the upper and lower are also prepriotory. So no upper on the market will work with the m&p lower.
I have talked with the people at black hole weaponry and they will build a barrel and use the factory barrel extension so that it will work with the factory BCG. I will be sending my off soon and will post a review when I get it back. 3 to 4 month wait time.

I may be missing something here because I think the S&W M&P line of " modern sporting rifles" is pretty good value, at least my M&P 15 is. That said, before I pump a lot of money into what seems to be a flawed product, I think I bite the bullet and trade it for a DMPS. Surely the cost of all the machine work and replacing parts can't be any less expensive the the purchase of a new rifle. I don't mean to start a flame here, but just my opinion. I have been considering getting an M&P 10, but I think I will look at the DMPS.

I understand what your saying. It is the same logic that causes someone to buy a Remington 700, then throw away the barrel the stock and the trigger and send it off and have the action trued and an new barrel, stock and trigger installed. They could have bought a GAP Rifle already don't for that price. But don't we do the same thing with 1911's, cars, computers etc? There is something about customizing something that you already own that makes it uniquely your own. If you saw what I did to my M&P, most people asked why, but to each their own. I think also it is easier to to things in small increments and enjoy it as you go than to try to outlay the cost of something fully customized out of the box. If I had to save 3 grand for a custom rifle, usually something comes along to unexpectedly consume that money like a roof or car repairs. But a few hundred a month I can usually siphon off for a project.

Exclamation Barrels!

Thank You, Mr Bergermeister!!! Is everyone calm now?
Panic over a situation that S&W obviously doesn't want to deal with for whatever reason? Somebody will profit where S&W doesn't want to ! For whatever their(S&W) reason!
And there will be more machinists and smiths making barrels than BHW! Proprietary is another word for obstacle! In this world somebody always finds a way around them. I know this post will be out dated but I'm glad everyone can relax now! I have a machinist friend he did me a conversion barrel 40 to 9 for my Shield! It's only a matter of time!

Is the replacement bcg or barrel from a specific manufacturer or wil any dpms compatible part work. I just purchased a bare receiver set for my first 308 build and hoping I didn't waste my money. Thanks for any help.
