Default Bipod type for original grip?

Being that I am a bit un-knowledgeable on bipod mounts but as I haven't found exactly the forward grip/rail I want for my new S&W M&P 10 .308 as of yet, I acknowledge that a bipod is necessary until I do. I would want to find one that could be used now on the original out of the box and later on a quad rail so I'm investing in one good one vs 2 cheap ones. I've read up on Harris Bipods, but it seemed to mount on a sling swivel mounting bolt, am I mistaken? I recently located the Apex Bipod Mount mentioned in the manual, I'm hopeful that is not the only way to go though. Does anyone know what other types of bipods and features I should be looking for to use in mid to long range training? ( I mounted a Nikon P-308 4x12x40 BDC with a range pack this last weekend) Presuming other types will attach, would it mount to the forward grip or the sling mount and would it be quickly attached & detached as needed?

Well....four + years later..... I am in the same situation. I've found nothing that will mount to the stock handguard unless I sharpen up my fabricating skills. I was going to order a Magpul front guard and the M-Lok bipod, but....like everything else....they are sold out globally. Very Frustrating. I guess I'll just use sandbags to get the scope zeroed in before the winter. I have not checked Atlas, but I imagine that everything there is sold out, too. Maybe the higher prices will keep some in stock. The one good thing for me is that I live about a mile from the Bushnell Outlet store. I picked up a Nitro 4x16 - 44mm unit at a fantastic price and the only defect was that the box had been dented in shipping. The store checks out all the scopes before they go on the outlet side of the store.

Go to Midway's web sight and get one of these:
GrovTec Sling Swivel Stud Adapter AR Forearm Steel Black.

If your factory fore end has the holes in the bottom, then this will work for the Harris style bipods (which aren't all that bad depending on the manufacturer). Other than that, plan on spending around $200++ for something like a GG&G or Atlas 'top shelf' bipods. If you want a rail mounted (Picatiny) bipod, you can 'fabricate' something like a MagPul rail mount section (probably like a 4-5 section rail - polymer or metal) on the bottom of the factory fore end.

This is a GG&G XDS-2 bipod mounted on my DDM4 carbine. It pans 20 degrees L/R, and, cants 25 degrees L/R of center. The bipod legs will also lock forward 45 degrees. It's attached on a M-Lok Picatiny rail section.

Some shooters knock Bipods.

I do a lot of shooting in a day at the range from 100 to sometimes 800 yards, plus I can switch it to my different rifles in less than 60 seconds.

or I guess I could used 10-12 sand bags to do the same thing, I guess?
