Vortex viper pst 6-24x50 on m&p 10
So i found this rifle used, because i cant find it anywhere. It will be delivered tomorrow. Have been looking into scopes since before i bought the rifle.
Was originally looking into the nikon m308. I dont really like the reticle.
I saw the post on here and see a lotnof you jave the vortex viper pst.
Wondering what rings you use? Found a post that said vortex cantilever quick release rimgs with 3in offset. Those seem to be discontinued. But i found the non quick release version. Will that work ok?
Ill take any other info you guys are qilling to give me.
The rifle is a NE compliant model. I hope to be able to pull out the pin and have the adjustable stock work. And if i want to have a break or flash hider i guess i can have the barrell threaded.
Thanks for any and all input

A 2" cantilever should work for you. That is what is on my M-308 and it gives the eye relief and decent enough clearance for the charging handle. Not optimal but decent.
With that big of an objective lens, you'll need a pretty tall mount to clear the hand guard on the barrel since my 42mm objective lens only has maybe 3/8" of an inch of clearance with the flip covers on it.
Now, looking at the magnification, what are your intentions with this rifle? 6-24 power is pretty high unless you are shooting long range. Just asking so you don't end up getting the wrong scope for what you want to do.
EDIT: And welcome to the forum.

Hi,
Welcome from the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey.
I have a Vortex Viper 6-24x PST SFP MRAD scope on my Remington 700 Long Range in 7mm Remington Magnum. I love this scope. I have it in the fixed 30mm rings marketed by Vortex. You are making an excellent scope selection, in my opinion.
Concerning your MP10 and its barrel configuration, don't sweat the crowned barrel. Living in NJ, all of my ARs must have a crowned barrel, and I am now shooting F class matches, and I don't see the crowned barrel being a handicap.
My suggestion, is if you are looking for maximum accuracy, measure the throat/leade, and load to length, even if it is greater than magazine length.
Good luck with your new rifle!

I'll agree on the flash hider. It makes no difference in the accuracy of the rifle and because of the way the action works, .308 Winchester doesn't kick that much. You could go with a muzzle brake if you wish but with the latest ITAR changes, finding a gunsmith willing to thread the barrel might be a problem.
There are some manufacturers that make clamp on brakes and flash hiders if you really want one and can't get the barrel threaded.

You should find that your M&P10 should handle the 500 yard line very easily once you find the load it prefers. I shoot an AR15 platform with a White Oak Armament match upper in 223 consistently with a Weaver T10 and a crowned barrel, and I usually can shoot a 1 MOA group if I do my job.
I use my Vortex Viper on my thousand yard rifle, and run the magnification at about 16X. I am very happy with the combination.

Then you should be good to go. You may also want to look at a better trigger than what the rifle comes with. It's not bad for an OEM trigger but there are better triggers out there with lighter pull weights.

I bought the exact same scope for my mp10 and bought the vortex 2 inch cantilever mount for it also. the only things I wasn't happy with were the fact that I had to lap the rings A LOT to get any kind of good contact with the scope, vortex specifically says that you don't have to but that wasn't true in my case. if I hadn't lapped the rings the scope would have been making somewhere around 20 percent contact, just something to consider. also, I didn't like the fact that it wasn't quick release, something I didn't think mattered until it fogged up on me during a deer hunt last winter. I ended up buying the Burriss PEPR but I haven't installed it yet. it is very robust compared to the vortex mount and has quick release latches. anyway, I hope this helps.

I found a vortex pst 6-24x50 ffp for sale used for a good price and bought that. Now just have to get a mount.
Also used a small drill bit inside the pin till it caught and spun and pulled the pin out (found in another post on this forum). So now i have an adjustable stock.

Is that the PEPR or PREPER one? If so, I've read good things about them.

I use the Burris mounts on almost all my AR's with scopes. Whether 1" or 30mm and have had great luck and no problems at all. Like the quick detach with back up irons on the rifles.

Ok so i have a question about the cantilever scope mounts. They say you need them for ar style rifles. But is that only for those who use an adjustable stock in the shorter positions?
I wrote to larue and asked. He said if you have a fixed stock or something like the PRS then he suggested the lt111 which is not cantilever. I would like to eventually get the prs. And even if i kepts the adjustable stock i cant imagine i want to shoot it nose to charging handle.
But i dont have any experience with AR rifles. What do you guys think?

Went with the larue lt111qd. Also got in a low profile gas block and a diamondhead 13.5" freefloat handguard. Have the new magpul prs on order and an ergo grip.
